Before purchasing several Arlo Pro cameras, we tried several video doorbells but none of them worked well in our particular location. So, we opted for the Arlo system instead. We are happy with the system as it gives us added surveillance a doorbell does not give. However, the audio 2-way setup on those cameras is really unusable.
Alas, an audio doorbell from Arlo to the rescue! It is very easy to install. It works with our inside chime (the other video ones did not). It has little to no audio lag. It rings your phone (s). It's loud enough to use! The doorbell is paired with an Arlo camera of your choice. We paired ours to a view of our front door. The doorbell has a motion sensor, so it triggers that camera. The camera feed is also on your phone while you're speaking to the person at your door! The sound is duplex and when you're done, you hit "end" on your phone. There are several message options you can deliver to the visitor. The visitor can also leave you a message. Very cool implementation. It was very easy to install, too.
For those of you concerned that it will count towards your 5 camera limit, Netgear says it will NOT. All conversations are recorded separately to the cloud as well.
UPDATE: 11/28: We exchanged the batteries for lithium phosphate ones as they are much better for colder temperatures. These were at 99% when first put in and after 2 weeks, they're still at 99%, whereas the stock batteries read 98% initially and dropped to 89% in a few weeks when the weather turned much colder.
I have my Arlo Doorbell paired with a camera at my front gate. It is about 100 feet away from from the base station and seems to be at the edge of the range of the system (it is supposed to be 300ft line of sight). The issue I’ve had with the range is more of a concern with the entire system than specifically with the camera though.
After getting the doorbell set up everything seems to work fine and the audio is clear. There is a short delay of a few seconds in the time it takes for someone to push the button to when your phone with the app rings. This is probably due to the system connecting through the home network to whatever cellular network your device is on, but having that convenience is an acceptable trade off for the delay.
The biggest con I have with this is the fact that Arlo only offers a replacement of stolen doorbells to people who have a subscription. Ring doorbell seems to offer this to anyone who buys their device. I can understand not providing that type of loss coverage for the cameras since you can put them in concealed or out of reach locations. But a doorbell has to be readily presented to anyone coming to your front door. So anyone can steal this one in a matter of a few seconds with just a small screw driver. If they offered that coverage this would have five stars.
There are several other differences with this one and the Ring, and I say differences instead of disadvantages because it depends on your situation and your needs. The biggest is there is no camera on the Arlo doorbell. Some might see this as a con but I actually like this because it presents a level of ambiguity about what is happening and what camera is recording when someone pushes the button.
If you already have an Arlo system I highly recommend this doorbell. If not, I would look at this compared to the Ring doorbell and just figure out which system suits your situation best. If you can afford it, I would also recommend looking into a professionally installed and managed system. But Arlo and Ring are the cheapest I would put on my network. Anything less and the security vulnerabilities start increasing.
Simple, easy to install ... I cleaned up the spot with paint and refilled the holes of the SkyBell I had ... it seems to be very liable, makes all my iOS device to react when pressed, really awesome
Price is very reasonable. Was easy to setup and the function is seamless. Highly recommended.
Let me start by saying that this is a really good product. It is somewhat unconventional in that it does not follow the normal practice of having a camera embedded into the doorbell. Instead it links a camera in your Arlo system to it.
Pros
- comes with everything you need to install it including a screwdriver.
- motion sensing works well
- integrates well with existing wired door chimes.
- smartphone app support including duplex voice comms
- pre-programmed responses to doorbell press
- does not count towards your camera total
- can be used as a panic button for home security or elderly monitoring
Cons
- smallest screwdriver head is the wrong size (too big)
- no provision for if wiring does not come directly out of wall
If (like me) your legacy doorbell cabling needs to be fed in from one side, the doorbell isn't particularly suited to doing this. Basically, it won't mount flat on the wall surface. This means that you either need to dig a channel into the wall or find a way to raise it off the surface so that you can pass the cables beneath. I'm sure that as time passes, various vendors will develop these. Personally a few hours with a CAD package & my 3D printer sorted the problem.
- if using notification on motion, doesn't do anything than just that
If you link a camera with the doorbell, its possible to have a scenario where the doorbell detects motion but the camera doesn't because its located too far away. In this circumstance, it would be nice if the doorbell could trigger camera recording.
- documentation for legacy doorbell wiring switch settings is confusing
Effectively this has been dumbed down too far. In NZ we don't have either of the scenarios outlined in the manual. So, it came down to "best guess" which turned out to be wrong. Basically the switch setting determines whether the contacts will operate in Normally Closed (NC) or Normally Open (NO) mode.
- cannot individualise smartphone ringing when doorbell pressed
As my smartphone is set to "bell ringing" (like a bell phone), having doorbell calls also bell ring is confusing. The only way to determine the difference is to look at the screen before answering.
- quite audible "off-hook" sound immediately after pressing doorbell
As a telephone engineer, I understand what is occurring however my industry knowledge also means that I know that this is excessive.
- Integration into Android app is disjointed
Its almost as if two different divisions (camera & doorbell) developed the integration into the app. The doorbell definitely has a different layout in the app compared to the cameras. Perhaps they'll address this in a future version of the app.
- can not initiate voice comms from the app like a camera
Voice comms only works once the button has been pressed. If someone is loitering around your door but hasn't pressed the button, then I guess you're plain out of luck.
- doorbell surround flashes when motion detected
Apart from the fact that it uses battery power, it's also a visual indication to an intruder that they've been detected. Of course it could be that that is the intended point. But still a choice would be nice.
Lastly I would note that the doorbell has only been recently released so I'm sure that there many enhancements & bug fixes yet to come. Then of course, I'm certain that the folks at Arlo are also hard at work developing the Doorbell Pro as we speak.

Description
Arlo audio doorbell - wire-free, smart home security, weather-resistant, works with Amazon Alexa (AAD1001)
Already had Arlo Pro setup so this was a natural. Voice message functionality is cool and I like being able to decide where the camera is mounted independent of the doorbell. Now that Amazon has added to the Arlo Skill (It shows up in devices) you can set it up to have a notification on all your Alexa devices when the doorbell is pushed. Waiting on the Arlo Chime. Hope they add ability to activate camera on Echo Show when doorbell is pushed with two way audio. Recommended.
For me it is a five star even though some improvements have to be made in its software. Let's begin by saying that this is not a solutions for anyone, knowing this will avoid a lot of negative reviews.
1. This is a complement for an user that already has ARLO cameras installed home. if you do not have an ARLO system and are happy or used to it, pass. Don't expect a miracle or a cheaper RING
2. If you are looking for the same of a RING system with lover storage costs. Go for the RING, because the ARLO doorbell is not RING, it is a complement for the cameras. this one does not records video by itself.
Pros:
-Easy to install, I have no problems installing, pairing and setting up
-Has a proximity sensor that lights the ring around the button to let the visitor know where to push or that the system detect the person (good for dissuading)
-Good quality sound, at least in my area
-Can leave preset messages
-Can answer with my cell phone even use video with my ARLO Camera located at a very good position at my doorway
-If I Do not answer the person who rings has the option to leave a message
CONS:
-Software needs to be improved. Motion sensor triggers video too late. It would be very good to have to option to manipulate the trigger delay
As I mentioned before, this system is intended as a complement for the ARLO cameras system, if you are expecting a RING system get one, this is not a cheaper RING
Will post latter on battery life.
I love it so far. Fast response, good audio. Been creeping out the neighbor kids that come to play with my daughter. Super effective. Make sure you set the chime switch properly; accidentally set it to digital which did weird things to my decades-old mechanical chime.
Response is good. Location free replies work. Have had to reset my base station every other day since installing; I literally never had to do that before. If the base station isn't locked up this is a solid solution.
Also added a Chime, so not sure if that or the Audio Doorbell is the culprit. I have confidence that these little issues will go away with a couple more firmware updates.
I like that I don't have to buy a service plan from Arlo for this to work. I have Arlo cameras and pairs up nicely with an existing system. Having no camera I thought it would be more responsive though. It takes about 30 min after pushing the button for the phone to ring. many times the person at the door leaves before I can answer it with my phone. Also have an elderly person in the house, the idea was that she could answer the door without having to rush to get up. The response time is a bit lacking. I've put up a little sign to allow 30 seconds for response before leaving, which has helped a lot. It will pair with an arlo camera which will notify you of someone at the door before the doorbell gets around to riding your phone. Its a nice concept, Needs a bit of work on response time.
