This printer is fantastic, works great, and super easy to setup. Most of the negative reviews here have to do with wifi problems. If you don't do it right the first time you're gonna have a bad time. So LISTEN UP: You can't connect to the printer wirelessly by hitting the wifi button. You must go to the website at support.brother.com and download the software. They're very easy to understand. You must FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS on their website in order to do this correctly. Additionally, this printer doesn't come with a USB cable so if you are wanting to connect via usb you must have an old one lying around the house, or borrow one from a friend, or buy one. They're very cheap and easy to come by these days.
I bought this unit strictly based on how happy I have been with my other Brother printer. I was using a monochrome brother laser printer strictly for printing text documents, and an HP ink jet all in one for copy, fax, and scan. I finally got sick and tired of getting ripped off for ink jet cartridges; the HP was killing me and the Brother just kept printing and printing without the need to constantly replace the toner. When the toner light on the Brother would finally come on, I would simply reset it and it was set for another few months, I must have done this at least two times before finally replacing the toner; this equated to months of double sided printing. So when the HP ran out of ink again, I decided to buy a single all in one to replace the other two, and there was no question I was getting the Brother. Since this is a new model and there were no reviews, I read the specs on the Brother website and saw that it had everything I was getting from the two separate units--except for color which I hardly used--but in one set up. I can tell you that this printer is very quiet, fast, takes up very little space, and feels solid and well made. I could not be happier with its performance, speed, functions, and options, and the set up could not have been easier. I wanted mine set up wireless, and the Brother software walked me through in just a few minutes; just make sure you follow the step by step instructions. And if you have any concern about the notorious noisy Brother cooling fan, don't worry, Brother must have been listening because this unit is quiet as a mouse. This is an awesome printer and the money I will save on ink will pay for this printer in no time. Goodbye ink jets.
For the price, this is a pretty comprehensive all-in-one. It doesn’t excel in all areas, and the build quality is more suited to home use than office use, but it does bundle together a decent mix of features at a very good price.
Setup: Very straightforward. Basically just take it out of the box, pull off the tape that holds the parts in place for transit, install the toner cartridge and you’re done with the hardware. It comes with a easy to read quick setup poster than walks you through all the steps.
Build quality: For the price, not bad. It is not built for heavy-duty use. This is a printer where you need to take care when taking the paper tray in/out or opening/closing the scan bed. It’s best suited to home use or very light office use. The trays and frame are lightweight and won’t take kindly to getting banged around in a busy office. The footprint is pretty compact and I like that there are no output trays sticking out. Prints land in a “cubby” under the scanner platen.
User interface: Very basic, but clean and simple. It has a small LCD screen that is reasonably clear. It can’t display much in terms of messages without scrolling. All the buttons are clearly labeled, but are also mostly small, rubbery and don’t provide much feedback. The paper tray holds a good amount (claimed capacity of 250 sheets) and easy to load. There’s a single-sheet bypass for things such as labels. Operation sounds are mostly hushed, with the loudest sound being paper being drawn from the tray. It's quiet enough that it can't be heard in use from an adjacent room.
Software setup: To get it operational for PC or network use, you need to install the Brother software. If you’ve used any other Brother products it will look and feel very familiar; if you have not, it’s very straightforward. Just follow the prompts. The Brother software is comprehensive with regard to printing/scanning options and easy to use. There is an online manual, but if you have even basic PC experience it won’t present a challenge. It supports both direct-connect and network printing. I didn’t encounter any setup difficulties with either.
Print performance: Not bad. It’s clear but not razor sharp, especially with graphics or very small text. It’s perfectly fine for printing text files and basic graphics (e.g., pie charts, etc.). It’s not great with photos but then again, since this is a B/W printer, it’s not a great choice for photos anyway.
Copying: I was surprised at all the features it has. For example, it has a button dedicated for ID copying – it allows you to copy both sides of an ID card/licence on a single sheet of paper. It can also turn 1-sided originals into 2-sided copies and vice versa. There are a wide number of format options available – much more than I expected. The only real drawback is that the ADF is single-sided only. If you want to copy double sided originals you have to do it one side at a time using the glass top.
Scanning: Does a decent job, and the Brother software provides for a range of tweaks that cover most of the common situations. Scans came through cleanly and were turned into PDF files.
Faxing: Could not test it since it’s been years since I sent or received a fax.
Toner: It comes with the TN-730 which is spec’d for 1,200 pages. It can also use the TN-760, which runs for 3,000 pages. Amazon carries both and the prices are not bad. The 760 is the better value, but if you are a light volume user, the 730 is a less expensive option. Loading the toner is simple. It is self-contained – no other consumables (such as a drum unit) need to be replaced.
Rating: It’s a solid 4-star product. While I don’t expect the moon and the stars at this price point, the lack of a double-sided ADF is a real drawback. The print quality for graphics, while perfectly fine for everyday use and basic business correspondence, is not as sharp as other laser printers at the same basic price point. But the overall bang for the buck is definitely here, so it should be on the short list if you’re looking for an inexpensive, home-use laser that can handle printing, scanning and copying (and faxing, if that’s something people still do!).
I am on my third Brother printer for the home office after purchasing this item. My other printer didn't die, it is still going strong by the way, but I wanted to get a printer that had duplex printing (back to back printing), plus had the capability for Apple Airprint and other wireless capabilities.
When I checked around, it appeared that Brother had resolved the main complaint I had with the previous model, which was the noise. The older printer would make the lights dim and would make noise I could hear through several rooms (not good when working late at night).
I jumped when I saw this printer for a really low price on a random day after looking at this model for a while (the kind of price that will make me skip eating out for a week, but not cause me to lose sleep). I am really happy so far with this printer.
1. What's in the box?: You receive (in an incredibly well-packed box) the printer, plus a CD of drives and some printed information.
2. Aesthetic?: This is similar to other Brother printers. It is fairly compact, and takes up a fair amount of space, but it is not bulky at all. The navy grey color at first seemed strange compared to the usual Brother color. However, it seems ideal now because in my office it is not a large black box soaking up space and it is a bit more neutral. Otherwise, this is a really nice looking item with a minimalist appearance. Gone are the large buttons with a green glow. Like most things these days, the glow when used is blue.
3. Use?: The first big test was the set-up for this item. Literally, I removed it from the box and plugged it in (following the quick-guide) and then placed the printer cartridge in, setting the time date and other vitals. I printed a test page, which demonstrated the duplex ability (awesome) and the rather quite nature of this computer. It is much quieter than my previous printer (going to my office now!). Although there is the CD drivers, I prefer that latest version so I visited the Brother solutions website and downloaded the drivers there. In the process, I received a new version of the scanning software as well. You can use this as a completely wireless stand-alone printer, but I connect it via an ethernet cable to my router for ease of use. However, I have no had any networking issues thusfar and I would imagine if this was used as a stand-alone printer it would be fine.
After installing the drivers, my printer was visible on the network and without any effort was visible as a Airprint device for my Apple devices. In other words, after a minimum of effort, I was able to print from the promised sources without any issues. Plus, the family laptops recognized the printer on the networks and had no issues.
As to the print, this provides a nice print as I would expect (plus you can play with the settings depending on the need). It is stated that the cartridge provided is good for 700 pages which isn't significant but enough (and ironically though I wanted a better printer, my printing needs seem to be declining!). The duplex is a very nice feature. This prints the page and then pulls the page abck in for the reverse side on the same page. A simple feat relatively, but so handy and missing from my previous printer.
Since this is a multifunction, there is printing, copying, faxing and scanning. As to faxing it works fine, and you can insert the multiple pages into the feeder for ease. Scanning works well as expected, even with multiple pages. In fact, it is better at feeding than my previous printer. The software is easy enough to use and is such a valuable thing to have. I hardly ever use my flatbed scanner now except for photo projects because of the scanner's ease of use.
The best feature of the printer is that is quiet. From the actual printing jobs, which are of course audible, to the after print fan job, this is MUCH quieter than previous iterations. In fact, there is no post-print 20 minutes of hearing a slight hum of the fan. The printer goes to sleep much quicker and is far better than before.
Overall: I can't comment yet on the overall longevity, but so far I am thrilled with this printer. It is amazing how little (relatively) money can purchase something that costs tens of thousands of dollars to duplicate years ago. This is a powerful little device and quite versatile. A very worthwhile purchase.
So far so good, would have given it 5 but I've only owned for a day. Set up was a breeze. I highly recommend setting up wired and wireless connection with the printer USB cable(not included) connected from printer to Pc to ensure a smooth installation. Once complete, you don't need the wired connection. I also downloaded the brother app on my android.. works great! The printing is fast as advertised. ** during the end of the installation, you'll be asked if you want to set up fax also. I said yes even though I have no land line. I plan on adding later so I can fax from home. Wonderful printer!

7/11/17: This is our first Brother printer, and so far I am satisfied with this printer. This is a black and white only printer, we did not need a color laser printer (our color printing is glossy, color laser printers cannot print glossy). We also wanted this printer to be our fax machine, I tested it, and it works fine, both sending and receiving fax's. Setup was easy for our Mac desktop computers, I did not have to download drivers, I connected the printer to our desktop computers using ethernet cables and ethernet switches. Setting up the wifi printing for our Mac laptop computer was harder. The Brother printer showed up in the laptop"a printer list, but it would not print. After reading a little reading, I used the disc that came with the printer, I went through the wifi setup steps and it worked. (Setting up wifi printing for our HP printers was much simpler, Brother needs to improve their wifi setup) For connecting our iPhones and iPad for wifi printing, I used Brother's free printing app "iPrint&Scan", was quick to install and it's easy to use, we can even print DropBox documents. I like that this printer has no paper trays sticking out, keeps the printer's footprint small. I also like the 250 sheet paper tray, so we do not have to reload it as often. I do not like the small menu screen, which does not light up, if you send a lot of fax's you may want to upgrade to a printer with a better screen. I purchased the 4 year extended warranty for this printer, hopefully I will not have to use it. I will update this review in the future if I have any problems with the printer.
Note: Brother has "all in one printers"; with, and without fax capabilities, the Brother MFCL2700DW Compact Laser printer, will send and receive fax's.
Product was very well packed and very easy to set up. All functions of the printer work well except for the fax function. In the set up program it mentions that a separate phone line within a phone line might have to be set up by the local phone company so that the printer does not interfere with the normal phone line operation. This function will return to my other printer as it does not conflict with our home phone. Also, the very, very small area for finished prints makes taking out finished pages very difficult. For this and the fax function, I can only give the printer 4 stars. It is nice to have a laser printer for all the non-color printing that I do. Is it a good buy for the price? Yes, if all you want to do is print, scan and copy, as a fax, it's of no use to me.
Update: Somehow, the printer lost its wireless connection through our network. The fix for this, according to Brother support was to uninstall all of the software on the computer and reinstall. Tried that and it still would not connect. Went back to Brother support, downloaded the full software suite from their site and went through the installation twice! Nothing. Ran CCleaner uninstall and restarted the computer twice and looked in the registry for anything "Brother". Reinstalled from CD one more time and finally it all installed and printed a test page and now have it back working. Still can only give it 4 stars.
I've had this printer for 7 months now and am liking it. It prints fast, sharp, and clear, scans well, hasn't jammed or caused any problems, setup was easy, the mobile app is fine, and so after some initial setup that wasn't too painful it just works.
I believe the toner cartridge that ships with the unit is an "introductory" size that has smaller volume than a replacement. It trigged a "Low Toner" warning at 290 pages, and the Amazon Dash auto-order replenishment triggered at 300 pages.
The desktop footprint is the same as my old inkjet (although this unit is a bit taller than my old printer) that seemed like it needed $50 worth of ink every 100 pages or so (looks like the Brother replacement toner should yield approx 3,000 pages for $75), so I'm very happy to have all of the functionality I need in a small, quick, and efficient printer.
We bought this printer because we were tired of paying way too much money for inkjet cartridges from a company whose name is an anagram of "PH." For the price of 1.5 replacement cartridges we could get this printer. Yes, this is B&W vs color, but we rarely need color. Between the ink "expiring" or not printing B&W when the color ink was low, this seemed like a good option. The toner lasts much longer than the ink and the replacements are cheaper. In the long run, this will cost much less.
As to the printer itself, it's very good. It's fast and quiet and boots up quickly (even from unplugged state). Color printers can take a long time to get ready, with all of their self-checks whatnot. Loading the toner was easy and obvious, and no mess.
This is a basic printer/fax/copier/scanner in the best way, meaning that it does all of these things in the traditional way.
On the negative side, it's "old school" display is small and a little cumbersome to use. I am taking off one star for the usability issues that come with being a "basic printer." This is not a knock on the printer quality, but don't expect fool-proof install and config.
Caveat: Don't press the "Wi-Fi" button thinking that it will help you setup Wi-Fi printing. This will lock up the printer if you haven't configured Wi-Fi. If this happens unplug and restart. Then configure the printer.
Installing the printer is actually easy, but it's not obvious that it's easy. Some people may figure it out, while others may not. If you're going for a wired connection you'll be fine following the "quick set up" instructions. However, if you're going for Wi-Fi (wireless) printing just know that you really should still use a USB cable to connect and setup the printer, and then lose the cable for Wi-Fi printing. If you try to configure Wi-Fi on the printer via tiny display and menu settings you're going to have a bad time. For one, all of the options are not documented anywhere. Instead, use a USB printer cable, and your laptop/computer, to connect to the Brother website (in the instructions). This will not only load the drivers and software onto your computer, but also connect to the printer, through the cable, and configure the printer to use the same Wi-Fi settings as your computer.
I did this on a Mac, but I assume the PC process is similar. In the end I just ran the installer software and never even needed to enter my Wi-Fi name or password. The installer found it and gave it to the printer automatically.
My 13 yo daughter was then able to configure her Mac to use the Wi-Fi printing without any help from me. I just told her to look for the "Brother" printer and she did the rest.
The Copy feature was also obvious if you've ever used a copier. I haven't tested the Fax or Scanner features yet. Supposedly the scanning is color, but I don't know the quality. So far, we are very happy with this printer.
Had minor issues getting it to connect to both my and my husbands desktops without a cable but downloaded the drivers from link provided in paperwork, spoke with my wifi provider and got it up and running quickly. I am running windows 10 on my desktop and he is running windows 7 works well on both systems. Would highly recommend to anyone who is tired of expensive ink cartridges that die with infrequent use. I have had brothers in the past, they are workhorses built for long term use. We have purchased several different brands on the less expensive printers and non have survived past the 1 year mark. I do photography and it is cheaper to have images outsourced for printing, the world has gone digital very few people want paper images anymore. So we invested in a monochrome all in one machine to do what needs to be done in business and personal. Works like a charm and super easy to print with and swap out cartridges as well as holds half a container of paper with each refill.
