NESTLE NIDO Fortificada Dry Milk 56.3 Ounce. Canister

NESTLE NIDO Fortificada Dry Milk 56.3 Ounce. Canister

Most of the time when I buy milk, some of it goes to waste. I'd been reluctant to buy dry milk, because the only type I'd ever used was the low fat Carnation brand that ends up tasting like milky water. The NIDO on Amazon roughly worked out to what buying a comparable amount of fresh milk would be for me, but because I can prepare it on demand, it doesn't go to waste like it would by buying fresh milk.

To prepare milk, you add one part of power to four parts water, but if I need something heavier -- like cream for a recipe -- I just use more powder. I use it for making homemade paneer, kefir, cooking, and baking. I don't drink milk on its own or add it to my coffee or tea, but the taste is good enough that you could easily use it for that, too.

If I didn't know it wasn't regular milk out of the fridge in my coffee... I wouldn't be able to tell. Nido is NOT non-fat dry milk! It is more like dried regular milk. I am sure if I was just drinking this mixed up as a glass of milk I could probably tell the difference between Nido and regular dairy milk but since I only use milk in cooking and in coffee... this product works great.

Excellent! I never thought that powdered milk could taste so close to real whole milk. (Probably because no US manufacturer MAKES powdered whole milk.) It's not something that we'll drink on a daily basis, but it has a long shelf life (date was about 10 months out and it's a 'BEST by' date, and other reviewers have attested to it tasting the same after even being OPEN for 4 years or so). Great item for your emergency pantry supply--whether it's a natural disaster or just waking up Saturday morning after promising pancakes to the kids the night before and discovering you have no milk! I will be keeping a few cans on hand at all times.

*Excellent coffee creamer. Waaayyy better than CoffeeMate. Tastes so good in coffee I could almost use it INSTEAD of half n half. I think I will! It has it's own characteristic flavor, but it's subtle and I actually like it. Plus is that it doesn't water down the coffee like adding whole milk does.

I'm the only person in my household who uses milk, and it's usually just a bowl of cereal ever weekend (or every other weekend). We were buying milk by the quart and throwing most of it out.

This is not as good as whole milk, but it's better than 2% milk, and it's perfectly acceptable for cereal.

I make it "on demand," eight ounces at a time. Here's my secret recipe: Put four ounces of water in a measuring cup and nuke it until it boils. Dissolve the milk powder into the hot water. Add ice cubes to bring the water level a little above eight ounces and stir. Before the ice is completely melted, spoon it out. The level should now be close to eight ounces, and the milk will be cool (not as cold as refrigerator milk, but cold enough).

This is the best tasting powdered milk I have tried. However, because it is whole milk with the fat, I feel the canister should be put in the refrigerator or freezer after opening. It began to smell funny and taste 'off' when kept for 2 months. Since I wasn't using it fast enough, I kept a cup of the powder in a closed mason jar outside the fridge and put the canister in my freezer.

Taste great, mixes well with my protein powder and makes a great tasting protein shake. It also costs about 1/3 of what we paid for powdered milk at the grocery store and that my friends, is a WONDERFUL THING!!!

I'm not sure about the complaints about taste and smell but the package I got tastes just like milk. Would recommend based on price and taste and ease of mixing - just add water and you're good to go.

September 2017 Update: Just got my 3rd can today. This blends very well with my protein powder and it makes great milk for cooking and the price is very good. Love this stuff and will continue to buy it.

April 2018 Update: None nice thing about the internet is allowing you to search. After the price of this product almost doubled I went on line and found a larger size bag of powdered milk at Walmart for about $14.50 and it actually had an additional 27 servings compared to this. FYI to those selling on Amazon - raise your price, lose your customers - the smart ones at least!!!

May 2018 Update: I have to apologize to Nido - the powdered milk I got from Walmart tastes like dog poop. I looked on line and this product was back to it's original price so I ordered it quick and thank God, it tastes so good and actually like real milk and not dog feces!!!

Got this to try as a coffee creamer to replace my usual plain half & half. I never use commercial coffee creamers which are disgusting and unhealthy. So far it is OK. My taste is currently "off" from some temporary OTC meds, but with the Nido in my coffee it tastes about the same as half & half does when my taste is off. I first tried a tiny taste of the dry milk, and detected no aftertaste; then proceeded to make coffee with Nido as the creamer.

I was making my coffee extra strong to counter the diluting effect of half & half, and for more body; but with the milk powder I don't have to.

Some people use the nonfat milk powder as a facial masque or as a base for one, so I imagine this whole milk powder would probably make a nicer masque with the "fat" already in it.

I have consumed milk for the 62 years I have lived on this Earth. This is the best powdered milk I have had and I have had lots of them. I subscribe for a lower price and I always have it now.

I started out as a bit of a Peak snob when it came to dry whole milk powder. The Peak was what I was first introduced to and it seemed totally worth the higher cost. Only thing that bothered me was the strong aftertaste it seemed to have no matter how I mixed it or used it. Super creamy, yes, but with that aftertaste I couldn't stand to drink it as milk or even in my coffee. Nido is cheaper, easier to find, and to my surprise and delight it doesn't have the aftertaste or 'off' sort of taste I got used to with Peak. It is not as rich and creamy, though, which means using more to get the consistency of Peak. About twice as much, actually. This stuff makes great ice cream, though, or even just chocolate milk for drinking. Perfect in coffee. For the taste I can deal with using twice as much, especially since it comes in such a big can. I'd say it probably works out about even with the cost of Peak when all is said and done, but I do find myself using this much more often in many more ways simply because the taste is just that good.

After having store bought milk going bad even before the expiration date, I finally got fed up and decided to switch to the powder form. I did try Carnation brand that came in a ziplock type bag but I disliked the idea of sealing - resealing it; besides, Carnation price jumped through the roof. Nestle NIDO, on the other hand, is priced right and packed into a huge can (almost 4 lbs) that closes pretty tight. In fact, when first opening it, I had to use needle nose pliers to pull the cover off, this is how tight it was sealed. It is made of whole milk which is good in my book as I generally dislike fat-free variations. We're talking about only four percent difference in fat content which is really isn't that much at all.

The instructions call for 4 tablespoons of powder for one cup of water. Keep in mind that this has be adjusted to the individual preferences. I used a little over one teaspoon for a cup of cold water, pretty much like I did with Carnation. And gave it a good stir. It tasted fine to me.

Grandkids approved, however they didn't get to actually observe the process of mixing. I was briefly considering to introduce this as a new milk but decided not to comment at all and see what happens. No one complained, and believe me they would if it tasted odd.

I am very satisfied with this brand, will definitely restock when I run out of it, and highly recommend to anyone.
