This is my first review on any product on Amazon, this review will be on the Canon PIXMA MX922 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax. After reading almost 75 reviews this will be focusing on the reviews with 1-2 stars. First to the complaints on the wireless air-print from Ios or Android, if you setup the printer using WPS your phone will never pick up the printer or will appear offline. You have to select WLAN Setup from Menu on the printer then select other setup options on the LCD screen then select standard setup and find your router then select and type in your password then connect. Also you have to make sure your phone is on the same channel, so especially if you have a dual-band router and your phone is on the 5ghz channel and the printer is on the 2.4ghz channel you will also run into problems. So every thing has to be on same channel, phone on 2.4ghz then the printer has to be on 2.4ghz channel then you will have absolutely no problems printing from your phone. Then with the complaints about noise there is a Quit mode selection in the menu when turned on it reduced all printer noise by at least 75%. Now to the ink consumption this printer is one of the best in the simple fact that if one of your cartridges runs out it will continue to print. Also the printer by default will print even all Black and White documents in the color setting because it brings a better quality this can simply be changed in your printer settings in your control panel to Black and White so most regular text documents will use the XXL cartridge which lasts for ever. With this setting changed if the page has color it stills prints in color.Compared to other printers when one cartridge runs out the printer will not continue to print until the ink cartridge is changed. The Canon PIXMA MX922 is one of the best printers I've used regarding ink, as a plus you can buy a color and XXL Black cartridge set from Amazon for a total of $60. As far as the scanner and copier go's it is one of the best I've used on a printer under $200. Have not had a chance to use the Fax so I can't reply in this review on that subject. One of the few downfalls of this printer is the size it really is a rather large printer compared to other all in one printers in it's class so take that into consideration. Photos are absolutely beautiful when used with Cannon Pro Platinum photo paper at 4x6 100 sheets for $20 on Amazon. As far as setup and install program wise it's pretty much standard procedure. I've had the printer for about two weeks now and really I am so impressed for only $99. To those saying about break downs well with the SquareTrade 3-Year Electronics Protection Plan ($75-100) for only $14.20 how can you go wrong? There is another slight downside if you don't have a router or wireless access the printer doesn't come with the USB cable to direct connect, but one can be purchased on Amazon for $5.49 the Mediabridge USB 2.0 - A Male to B Male Cable (10 Feet) - High-Speed with Gold-Plated Connectors - Black. For those people giving this printer 1-2 stars it really is not their fault they are just ignorant to technology. Throwing off people into second guessing in purchasing this amazing piece of home all in one equipment. The auto 35 page duplex is also so time saving and conserves so much on paper consumption. I really hope this review finds people who are interested in purchasing this machine. The VERY few downsides like the USB and shear size is the only reason I didn't give this product a 5 star rating. I hope this review was helpful in letting you disregard the people giving this product 1-2 stars. Thanks for taking the time to read a real review!
I have run through two other multi-function machines in the last two years, an Epson and a Brother, both unacceptable. The Brother in particular, the model with the large ink cartridges, was terrible. Constant problems. Both of them gobbled ink and the Brother printed way less pages per cartridge than claimed by Brother. I junked both of them.
So then I buy this Canon. $65? Seriously? With two-sided printing and scanning? Set it up and order Blake ink cartridges for pennies. It works perfectly. My wife prints tons of photos for her business with absolutely no problems. I have since bought two more for my kids. The non-oem ink works great and saves us a fortune.
Complaints about longevity? Some reviews say it only lasts a couple of years? Who cares? At this price point it's disposable! Look at what you'll save on ink alone.
This thing is a steal. Light years better than the competition. Buy it.
The Canon Pixma MX922 printer is truly one of the best values for the money. I bought this printer for around $70 I would have a very hard time finding another printer just as good for under $150. Below I will go over the different aspects of the printer as well as the pros and cons.
Build Quality - The MX922 is a beast of a printer measuring in at 19.4 in wide, 15.6 in deep, and 9.1 in high and weighing 25.7 lbs. This definitely is not a compact printer by any means. The printer is made out of plastic all around, but for the insanely low price I can't complain.
Display Interface - The Canon printing interface is very well designed and is well suited for the 3 in color display. The menus are easy to navigate as well as feature packed with options such as template print which allows you to print your own notebook paper or graph paper without having to go to the store. My only complaint about the user interface is that typing things such as the Wi-FI password is painfully slow.
Ease of Use - The Canon Mx922 is very easy to use either wirelessly or connected to your computer via a cable. The printer features two paper trays, one for photo paper and one for printer paper, a feature that is usually found on commercial printers. The main paper tray holds up to 250 sheets of paper which eliminates the need to refill paper every week. Another great feature of the MX922 is the automatic double sided printing. This is one of my favorite features of the MX922 since you don't have to manually flip the paper. The printer does that all on its own. The scanner also has automatic double sided scanning and scans both sides of the paper without you having to.
Ink Usage - This is one of the printers biggest flaws. The MX922 goes through its ink cartridges very quickly. However, unlike other printers, the Canon will print a black and white document even if the colored ink cartridges are depleted. One good thing about the ink is that you can buy XXL pigment black ink cartridges so that you can print many black and white documents using the pigment black ink.
Print Quality - The print quality of the MX922 is incredible. The printer can print at resolutions of up to 9600x2400 DPI for color and 600x600 DPI for black and white documents. Printing photos on photo paper yields incredible results. Pictures are sharp and colors are vivid, even when printing on regular photo paper. Photos look amazing, almost to the point where they look professionally printed. Because of the Canon, I now make personalized holiday cards on Microsoft Word and print them with the MX922 to create special cards that you just can't buy at the store. One of the biggest flaws about the Canon is that the print speed is slower than average. The Canon can print black and white at 15 ipm and color at 10 ipm which is slower than average. The Canon also prints 4x6 inch borderless photos in 21 seconds which is just average. The MX922 makes up for its slow print speeds with its automatic double sided printing which saves a lot of time and effort.
Scan and Copy Quality - The MX922 scans documents very quickly with its 35-sheet Duplex Auto Document Feeder which automatically feeds in sheets of paper to be scanned. An added bonus to the scanner is the automatic double sided scanning feature which saves time and hassle. The scanning quality is pretty good, and you can barely tell the difference between an original copy and the printed copy. Also, you can either scan to an email address or scan directly to a computer with a cable connection.
Other Features - The MX922 can also print directly from a USB flash drive which I found very useful. You can also print images directly from an online photo album straight from the printers color display. There is also a quiet setting which can be set to activate during specific hours which significantly reduces the printing noise since normally the printer is quite loud. Template print is another useful feature which allows you to print things like notebook paper and graph paper directly from your printer. The MX922 can also print directly onto CDs, a feature you don't see on most printer. Also the printer can automatically open the front flap right before it prints so you don't have to.
Conclusion - The Canon MX922 printer is a great printer which can do just about everything. Its print quality makes up for its slow speed and for the price you won't find a printer that even comes close when it comes to print quality and the number of useful features. The MX922 also has features that you would usually only find on commercial printers such as automatic double sided printing and an automatic document feeder for scanning.
Pros: Print quality, value, many useful features
Cons: Very large printer, slow print speed.
That said, I don't try different brands so I can compare them, so I may be biased. My camera equipment is Canon (for many years) and so my last printer was a Canon IP6000, purchased in 2006, for printing 4x6 photos (and documents). It worked great until recently when it suddenly slowed way down, which is what prompted me to go shopping. Naturally I read the reviews for Canon printers (and some other brands) and it appeared that this one was the newest technology and already had favorable reviews, including from people with home businesses.
Now, let's switch gears. My printing needs have diminished over the years as I have become increasingly more digital in document storage, online financial transactions, etc. Basically, if I can do it digitally, then that is the route I take. This includes my photo collection which is stored on my iPad for showing off. :-) I also bought a CanoScan 8600F (flatbed scanner) in 2006, which is still in use.
So, imagine my very pleasant surprise when I discovered the awesome speed and stream-lined functionality of the multi-sheet scanning feature! If one sets up a directory (in the accompanying software utilities) ahead of time, then it's as simple as loading your documents, hitting either start button (black or color) and very quickly a pdf file shows up in the pre-set directory. Did I mention it has an ethernet port and is quickly (and painlessly) recognized on the network once the drivers are installed? I don't like Wi-Fi for home networking, I prefer ethernet (gigabit speed) when ever I can get it, so this port was a big plus for me. All of my computers see and work with the Fax driver, Printer driver and Scanning driver.
Now, let's mention some little things that make this machine great. I never turn it off as it has a low-power state (automatic after a few minutes of inactivity) where everything powers down with only one small, blue light glowing. If I send something to the printer it immediately comes to life, takes a few moments to warm up and (this is cool) the paper output tray *automatically* opens and the extension support flips out! It's the little things that make me smile. :-) Also, if I place one or more documents in the scanner slot (while in low power mode) then it instantly springs to life and takes a few moments to warm up.
Having stated that I print less and less these days, I must say I was impressed with the ink cartridges. They all have small, red LED lights that confirm they are plugged in correctly and in working order! Another smile. :-) Now I don't FAX much these days, but it's nice to know that it is hooked into the "clone" line through my PhonePower VOIP adapter (2 ports) and therefore is available upon demand. Oh, btw, the top lifts up like a flatbed scanner also, so I guess I will be donating the CanoScan 8600F soon.
Final analysis: This machine's capabilities pleasantly exceeded my expectations, even after reading the specs and reviews. It has proven to be fairly equal in functionality to the Xerox multi-function machine at work, but at a fraction of the cost. The only thing it can't do is print 11x17, but that isn't an issue at this time. I will try to get back in a year to report on it's longevity prospects.
UPDATE: I have knocked the rating down to 4 stars because there is no secondary sheet feeder. (My rating for this is actually 4.5 but that choice isn't available). Occasionally I have need to print on 8.5 x 14 (legal). With this unit one must remove the regular paper from the lower (main) paper tray, extend it out (at least they did build that into the unit) and load the 8.5 x 14 paper. I suppose I have been spoiled by top (secondary) sheet feeders on previous printers, so this is a small let-down. I guess I assumed the scanning feeder could be used as a secondary sheet feeder (for printing) but due to the design of the machine it cannot.
UPDATE, 11-24-13: I had occasion to send my sister a letter today (she hates email) so I typed one up and hit the print button. I have not printed anything for several months, and the print cartridges are now 7 months old. My letterhead includes a small photo of a sunset over a local river at the bottom. After hitting the print button the machine woke up, flipped out the print tray, spent a minute doing a self-diagnostics, then printed out my one page in about 7 seconds. Apart from a slight smudge at the top (probably due to inactivity for several months) the letter printed out flawlessly, including the photo. I reprinted the letter and there were no smudges or flaws. Since I have not needed "legal" size paper anymore, I am changing my rating to 5 stars since this machine is doing everything I need it to do.
UPDATE, 05-25-14: I lost my mother on Feb. 1 and inherited her estate. I was forced to move temporarily from WA to KY to liquidate the estate. My first priority was to set up my office so I could deal with the legal, financial and medical accounts and issues. I am also Trustee so there were many Will disbursements to deal with. I did not bring my MX922 from WA, instead I bought a new one once here. After 4 months of scanning, copying, and printing, I can now say I have given this machine a workout, including the printing function. It has performed most excellent. I also needed to buy more ink cartridges and discovered an alternate source (here on Amazon) for cartridges that are: (a) a fraction of the cost of Canon cartridges, (b) still have the same red LED's on them that communicate with the printer and (c) are relatively CLEAR, so one can see how much ink is left. I still cannot comment on photo printing as I am all digital these days when it comes to photography. But I can give this unit 5 stars for being a workhorse in all other areas! I can also say that if one schedules their need for printing envelopes in batches, this unit does that professionally as well.
UPDATE, 08-24-15: Earlier in the year I decided to start creating my own greeting cards (using CorelDraw) and printing out 5x7 photos for b-day gifts to relatives and friends (from PhotoShop). Both machines are still working great, and they produce exceptional photos. There are settings within the Canon print drivers that one can play with to improve the photo quality as well. I can also endorse the much cheaper ink cartridges that I buy from Blake Printing Supply on Amazon. I have gone through 2 sets (10 cartridges in a set) and they work great as well. For those wanting to find them, do a search on Amazon for "MX922 compatible ink cartridges" and look for Blake Printing Supply.
The Cannon MX922 All-in-one Fax/Printer/Scanner is an excellent product for the price one has to pay for it. I have owned and used one for well over a year now and have had absolutely no troubles with it whatsoever. I read these reviews and see many owners who do apparently have problems - such as the following:
"Uses too much ink" - Basically this printer uses about the same amount of ink-per-page as any other ink-jet printer PRINTING THE SAME DOCUMENT - and THAT is the criteria by which it should be measured. Printing a color photograph uses a different amount of ink than does printing a page completely full of size 11 Times New Roman font.
"The ink is too expensive - $55 at Wal-Mart to replace all the cartridges" - Yes, but I buy my replacement cartridges right here on Amazon - $35 for SEVERAL complete sets of replacement cartridges. Exact same cartridges, exact same ink no problems with the printer saying "Non-standard ink cartridge" or anything like that.
"It makes lots of noise before it starts printing" - Read the instructions on how to set the printer up. It tells you in there how you can resolve that issue. If it wasn't originally set up correctly you can fix that - without having to re-install the printer.
"It takes a long time to start printing once I issue the command for it to do so" - Let's go back to the ink-usage scenario: The length of time it takes for the printer to start printing depends MOSTLY on WHAT you are printing - is it a text document without graphics or photos embedded in it? If it is the printer should start spraying ink on page in about 5 to 10 seconds after you issue the print command from your computer. Is it a text document with graphics and/or photographs in it? This will take longer, sometimes MUCH longer (depending on how many graphics / photographs there are, how big they will be printed on the page, and even their placement on the page. The printer's electronics have to figure out when (and where) to spray millions of tiny, tiny dots of ink onto the page to accurately represent what you saw on your computer screen, and it has to know how to do it for YOUR computer application program AND for YOUR computer type/brand/operating system/network. Any one of those last written elements can make a WORLD of difference as to printout speed.
"It doesn't do #10 envelopes" - Yes it does. There is a bit of a process the operator has to do BEFORE trying to print this size of envelope, but it DOES print them, like removing the paper from the lower tray, putting the envelopes in, then telling your application to that the paper is a #10 envelope, etc. Time-consuming - yes. Does it work? - Yes. Will the printer shine your shoes at the same time? No.
If your printer does not work with your computer or your router or your network like you want it to, you might have one of those situations where a computer tech might be your best resource to fix the problem. If it doesn't work when your better half sits down to print something out but it works just fine for you - please let me know how you have resolved that problem. I'm like you... I'm still learning how to do things with this printer!

We bought this for my office a couple of years ago for a fax machine replacement, yes, people still fax. We have also been using it as a scanner, color copier, and color printer. It has been my go to printer at work, despite having a Brother Laser printer on the network as well. If I need a bunch of black and white prints of something, I will use the laser, however, 95% of the time I use MX922. It works well as a fax machine, prints black and white well, prints color well, copies black and white well, copies color well (although slower than black and white), and scans okay. The only thing I wish they could improve is the software for the scanner. It may be the owner/reviewer's fault, but the scanning interface is not as intuitive as it could be. It would be nice if I could just let the program know, I want to make a pdf of the next few pages at 600dpi, and fire it off. Heck, it might even do that for all I know, but as a frequent user who does not rtfm, the correct way to do so hasn't leaped out at me. Also, in order to do everything it does, it's big, and it's heavy. You'll need to have a place for it.
Now for the heck yeah, I just bought one for my house too, despite it being overkill...
The price: c'mon, it can be had for $100 delivered. This thing is a powerhouse and technical marvel for that price, and I do love and use the crap out of it.
The output looks great.
It is VERY easy to change paper and ink cartridges, etc.
It is easy to set up and get on your network.
It is easy to diagnose any problems that crop up, low ink, network being down, etc.
It is extremely reliable, with no paper jams. (I think I had 2 easily resolved paper jams in over two years of heavy use.)
It runs cheap copy paper and thick card stock without a hiccup.
The printer software is great. You can adjust as needed, or ignore as needed. (scanner, not as much)
It prints on both sides of the paper.
It can print skinny time cards and envelopes very easily.
It has a great document feeder that actually works.
...and most importantly to cheapskates like me:
Canon printers are not ink nazis. You can use non-Canon ink. Hopefully, they can still make a living, but they won't make a killing off their ink. Factory Canon ink, however, is much more rainproof as I found out yesterday at the outdoor range. We got limp card stock to score, but I was amazed that the Canon ink (included with my newest printer) did not run at all. I was impressed.
So my bottom line is that if you need a b&w and color printer, and scanner, and fax machine, and are printing anything from envelopes to regular 8.5x11, and have a hundred bucks and somewhere to put it...buy it.
I was NOT given this product or even a discount, or coerced, or given a cool hat or anything, for my highly opinionated though amazingly accurate opinion on this bad boy. (I paid real after tax money for it and still liked it.)
So there.
Yes, I called this printer a beast ... because it's big, and it does everything. I had neglected to read the dimensions (my bad) so did not realize how large it is. If you are looking for a compact printer, this isn't the one. However, if size isn't an issue, and you want a printer that does everything, and does it well, this Canon MC922 is perfect. For home use, and low-quantity business use, this printer is excellent. The one negative is that it is slow by todays standards.
One of the selling points on this printer for me is that it uses five separate ink cartridges - pigment ink in black for b/w document printing and dye ink in black, cyan, magenta and yellow. With individual ink cartridges, you just replace each as they empty. I set the printer up so that it uses the large pigment black ink for all documents, and the fast draft printing uses less ink but still prints sufficiently for most of my home needs. Easy to change the setting for documents that need to be best quality. I printed some vacation photos in 4 x 6 to send to an elderly relative, and while I used photo paper, I used standard quality, which prints faster, uses less ink, and for snapshot purposes, works very well. For a larger photo and/or one that is to be displayed or otherwise needs photo quality, it's slower, but turns out great results.
I love being able to easily print from mobile devices. It is possible to print a photo or document from facebook or website without downloading, etc. My son needed to print an application that was ten pages and two-sided. He used his iphone to print it, and with just a few taps on his phone, out came the entire application, printed on both sides! I was amazed -- I guess I am behind the times on what printers are capable of these days. He also needed a copy of a document that was two sided, a few clicks on the control, feed it in, and out comes copy, two sided.
I've mentioned "slow" a few times. It takes as much as two minutes at times before the printer starts printing. Print speed is relatively fast in fast mode and standard mode for photos; but higher quality is slow. For home use, low printing demand, this is not an issue, but if you need to do production printing, or need a printer that fires up and prints NOW, then look elsewhere.
Overall, I highly recommend this printer for general home use, and for photo printing. The print quality is excellent, the features make it the right printer for whatever you need to print. I did not realize how handy duplex printing would be! Or mobile printing! Very happy that I selected this printer beast.
10/10 PRINTING QUALITY: Photos, art, brochures, invitations, vellum, clear sticker photo paper (folder covers), CD covers, high quality prints...+ all regular printing. If you like the quality of Epson for photo printing, you will like this: nearly as good + it can do 100 more things.
10/10 SCANNER QUALITY
1/10 Lasting quality - See below. WILL DIE after 2 YEARs GUARANTEED. - BUY the 4 year PROTECTION PLAN! 100% WORTH IT.
1/10 Canon: Environmentally responsible - See below.
Absolutely love this printer BUT I have beef with the people who designed this thing because, just like so many reviews say and just like Apple forces you to buy a new iPhone when your phone can't handle new updates, Canon has built this printer to die for no other reason than greed after 2 years. After 2 years, ON THE DIME, my 1st printer died. It's as if they insert a "self-destruct" chip that on it's 2nd birthday, like a reverse Sleeping Beauty, this thing kicks the bucket, and for no reason. Like 0 reason. It was working fine on one page, and on the next, the whole printer just turned off silently and couldn't be turned back on. No spark, no noise, no nothing. Just done.
I was in the middle of a major project and needed my home printer immediately and highly functionning, no time to research a new one. So I reordered a 2nd printer and I got the 4 year protection plan. The new printer arrived (printer #2). It too had some internal defect in it, and I couldn't do any of the initial set up install functions required. I had to send it back. I now had 2 printers sitting in my living room, 3 when the 3rd arrived a day later. It looked like they were breeding. Thankfully, Amazon, sent me a 3rd printer immediately, so i could have a working one right away. Amazon's customer service was great!
TLDR: This is an AMAZING printer/scanner that can probably print your car in Hi DEF, but BUT BUY THE PROTECTION PLAN because it WILL DIE AFTER 2 YEARS (which is criminal).
Canon should be sued for the horrible fraud that's going on with this thing and how they make it die after 2 years on the dime. Prior to this printer (or set of), I had my last Epson printer for 10-12 years.
Canon, save the environment, be ethically responsible and don't just think about your greedy shareholders, build these things to last and not to take up more space in a landfill.
This is a great printer, I have 2 of them because I love them so much. I am very impressed on how well it works and all the things it can do. Just today I took a two sided original and put it in the auto feeder and it automatically made a two sided copy. I have made calendars and it literally prints the whole 12 month calendar, both sides of the paper without one jam or mishap. I have found one ink supplier that is super cheap and the ink works great. My oldest Canon printer on one occasion required me to run the deep cleaning cycle and then everything was fine. I only bought the 2nd one because of the great price and as a backup. All my Apple devices see it right away not counting my Windows devices. I can’t say enough good things about this printer. The only problem I had is the paper output tray. Be real careful with the pop out extender, I broke something inside and the extender swings out past 90 degrees but that does not effect the printer in any negative way that I can see except in pushing it back up and closing the output tray drawer. It is not really a problem and not a serious problem. I highly recommend this printer. I have had HP, Kodak and other brands and by far this one is the best one I have ever had.
I bought this printer because it was so highly recommended by a friend of mine who loves hers. She raves about the low-cost, third-party Arthur Imaging ink cartridges she uses, which work perfectly, according to my friend. She buys the 28-cartridge set at this link: http://www.amazon.com/Arthur-Imaging-Compatible-Cartridge-Replacement/dp/B00UWC4PI4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00
I use my printers for home use and an occasional at-home print job for my middle and high school students. The low cost of the quality ink cartridges was enough to convince me to buy this one. The ink cartridges in my former printer had run out. And it would've cost me more to replace all four of those cartridges than it cost me to buy this MX922 and the 28-cartridge set of Arthur Imaging ink. That's pretty much a no-brainer, wouldn't you say?
My printer arrived just today. I immediately set it up and printed a couple of test pages, using the Canon cartridges that come with it. An update to this review may be necessary for some since I've not had sufficient time to personally assess it. HOWEVER:
If you're not familiar with WIFI printer setups or aren't somewhat techy, you may have a bit of trouble setting up this printer: The setup instructions are somewhat sketchy for WIFI in my opinion. I had to refer to YouTube video instructions for two or three steps.
FYI: When you insert the ink cartridges correctly, a RED light appears. Uuuh, that's a poor color choice. When I saw the red light, I thought I'd inserted the cartridge incorrectly and immediately did a YouTube search. Green would've been a better color choice.
After watching a couple of YouTube videos, I was able to pretty much sail through the process, but I've setup numerous wireless printers before.
BOTTOM LINE: Buy it. Given the Canon name, the good reviews, the sensible cost, and the low cost of the third-party ink, I'd say it's a good buy.
UPDATE (12/3/16): This printer is serving me very well. It has never jammed, always prints correctly, and is very economical to operate.
