I've had the Vivobook for a week. I love this machine. I have hhr combined SSD and 1 TB HD. I did my research on the specs and this is the best value I could find for the money.
The machine booted up windows 10 in exactly 10 seconds! After I set up my fingerprint scan it does the fast and easy boot up every time. I am surprised by how fast it is.
So far it's completely silent. No fan noise no HDD boot up noise, nada.
I would suggest that you see the YouTube reviews of the machine, the keyboard is a bit plain and the build is plastic, but for me it is just fine.
I love that I can upgrade it and both the memory and the SSD and this will be by far the best machine I've ever owned. I am happy with this purchase, and I think you will too.
Update 9/21/18: Still going strong and still think this is a great value. Little things that I didn't think about:
It doesn't have a backlit keyboard. At night when I work in the dark, it would be helpful.
The fingerprint sensor is iffy. I stopped using it. I think it's a driver thing, but I don't bother.
The speakers are tinny and not great, but I use a Bluetooth speaker that works great with it.
Wife and I were looking for a solid at home laptop that can be used for work if necessary. Saw this was Amazon's Choice and popular laptop. After reading the reviews and recommendations, bought Crucial 8GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DR x8 Unbuffered SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT8G4SFD824A. This is a quick laptop and thankful for all the helpful recommendations.
Once the computer was set up, make sure the change over where new files were being saved. Outside of that, fantastic laptop and would recommend to others
Nothing to say that hasn't already been covered by those reviewers far more knowledgeable than I other than the keyboard was designed by a total sociopath. No, this is not an exaggeration. A sociopath.
First, as has been mentioned, the power button is just a regular key. You will turn the computer off while typing a surprising number of times until you teach yourself to look at the keyboard every time you use the backspace key like you are an elementary schooler in their first day of keyboarding class.
So, this is certainly annoying, but not quite sociopath level, I am sure you are thinking. Just wait.
Second, the top row of F-keys is locked in function mode. Want to change the volume? You must hit the fn key and then the volume button. That doesn't sound so bad, except that they are quite far apart, and this makes doing so with just one hand quite difficult as it well outside the normal reach range when typing. But worse is that Asus bios doesn't allow this to be changed anywhere. Oh, they are so sure they got this one right, why not go to the extra trouble of making it stay that way?
So now we have something configured in a suboptimal way (I mean changing volume is far more common an operation than whatever it is that F10 might do) and they won't let you fix it! See. SEE! Now you are starting to see the sociopathic element at play here.
Third, and this is the straw that breaks the camel's back (which is an incredibly cruel metaphor if you think about it, poor camel), we have the volume and screen brightness keys. As mentioned above, you are already doing finger yoga, stretching between the fn key at the bottom of the keyboard and whatever control key you want at the top, and now you are face-to-face with true evil. The screen brightness keys are F5, F6, F7 and are lower brightness, raise brightness, turn screen off. The volume keys are F10, F11, F12 and are mute, volume down, volume up. So, we have, left to right - down, up and off for brightness and off, down and up for volume. Down, up, off and off, down up. What kind of monster does these sorts of things.
So maybe, just maybe, I have a trace of OCD. The laptop has much to credit it, but I maintain that the person in charge of keyboard design should face a complete and thorough psychiatric evaluation.
This computer is great. I am very satisfied with it and i would definitely recommend it, especially for the price!
The good: It is SO fast. The solid state hard drive boots up windows and the start up programs in about 20 seconds. Browsing and navigating is lightning fast. The screen/ display is amazing. Full HD and very bright. The battery life is awesome, way better than my last laptop. This laptop is very lightweight and portable.
Only bad things; One month after having it the videos stopped playing and i was getting error messages. Long story short, I needed to update my sound drivers and now it is working fine. The other thing is left clicking on the mouse pad isn't the best, but it works. This is easily solvable by getting a wireless mouse. All in all, I would definitely recommend this laptop, especially over the others that I have had and used.
I ordered the version that comes with a 128 SSD hard drive pre-installed because I don't feel comfortable taking apart a laptop and installing things myself. So far I'm very happy with it.
Applications load very quickly, even the more hardware intensive programs. The already fast boot up time is even faster with the fingerprint sensor.
Windows 10 is pre-installed on the SSD which is awesome. That's also where I keep applications for fast launch times. I store all my media on the slower 1 TB hard drive and made a shortcut on the desktop for easy access.
I was happily surprised to find that DaVinci Resolve 15 runs great for video editing. My primary reason for getting this laptop was to be able to run video software. Exactly what I needed.
One annoying thing is that Asus doesn't have a way to use function lock. This means it takes two hands to turn the volume up or down because you have to press the Function key. To fix this, I downloaded SharpKeys 3.7 which easily edited the registry to allow f10 through f12 to adjust the volume with just one button.
No bloatware was pre-installed, but there was some minor Asus greyware that came with the initial update that was easy to dispose of.
This is a powerful laptop at an affordable price. Because of that, there will be some drawbacks. Battery life is fine, but not exceptional. You'll want to carry the charger around with you. The large screen and keyboard are decent, but nothing special. It's not heavy but not small either.
If you want a laptop that has enough power to get things done but can't afford the price of a MacBook Pro or Ultra Book, this might be the one you're looking for.

I've owned this laptop for a week. The laptop is as advertised. The screen display is great, the laptop is very thin and light, easily fits into my bookbag at 15.6". It came with 128 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD drive. The Intel Core i5-8250U is awesome; although, I think I would be a little more comfortable with 16 gb of ram and a little more solid state storage (256ish) to make it run just a tad faster, but I can't complain at all for the cost. I haven't done anything too strenuous, but I like to have a little extra room for hardcore multitasking and/or gaming since I'll be starting graduate school in a few days. Windows 10 feels fresh with their updates. Heck, I might even use Edge. Just kidding. I love is the fingerprint scanner. This is my first laptop with a fingerprint scanner, and on this ASUS it's very fast so that is convenient. The laptop has been very quiet, and hasn't heated up on me yet. It feels very nice holding it in my lap because there is plenty of space for the palms of your hands to rest while you type if you're leaning back.
The keyboard isn't amazing, and I haven't used the webcam yet. At first, the touchpad was very irritating as it kept flipping on and off, but a quick download of the SmartGesture driver fixed that. The whole touchpad never turns off anymore, but very occasionally I lose capacity to scroll with two fingers, in which cases I have to click the scroll bar to scroll. The speakers on this laptop aren't loud at all at max volume, but that isn't that high of a priority to me, in a few days when I'll be on campus. With any Windows computer I have to delete some unnecessary things before I use though. This one wasn't any different but it didn't take long.
All in all, my budget was $800, but I was sold on this $600 computer. To me, with the 8th gen processor and only 3.7 lbs, this was an easy choice if you value portability and performance on a budget. If you don't care about the portability, the Acer Aspire E 15 gives this laptop a very good run for its money at the same price. But at over 5 lbs I had to turn my head.
This computer is fantastic. I did a lot of researching looking for laptops in varying sizes (13.3, 15.6, 17.3). I was looking for an SSD and i5 8th gen CPU, and at a great price. After arrival this computer easily beat my expectations. The computer is super fast (thanks SSD) and has no problem running large excel spreadsheets and access files. I looked at more expensive laptops and almost pulled the trigger on the $750 Zenbook. I'm more than happy with this "Cheaper" alternative that all of my needs. SSD, 8th gen i5 CPU.. Laptop is super light and slim too which makes it ultra portable
I just got my new laptop in the mail last night, and I am very happy with it so far. I read the reviews before I bought it, and I think a lot of the reviewers bought the version of this computer with just the regular hard drive. I sprung the extra ~$90 for the 128 gb sold state hard drive. When I plugged in and started the new computer up, I found it was very fast. So far everything is working very well, and I am happy with it. For this budget price, I think this is really an excellent buy!
I'm very satisfied with this laptop. Being so thin and so light, yet is has a build quality that I think rivals others in the price range. An 8th Generation Intel i5, 8GB of RAM, and a 1080p display that's vivid and crisp, paired with speakers that aren't that bad and chiclet keyboard that's responsive?
Yeah, I'd say it's a pretty good piece of tech for the price.
Battery life is pretty decent. It's listed at 8 hours, but of course depending on how you use it that will vary. Having USB Type-C is a nice touch, as well as USB 3.0 ports. Of course for me, the 8GB of RAM it comes with is enough, but it's a little "future proofed" with the ability to add more, which is always a plus. My only gripe is that it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, but it can still handle some less demanding games.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone trying to upgrade from an older laptop, or just someone who wants a good all around laptop in general
First is all this is a great laptop. I got it for $569.99 which made it a good price for all the specs that you get.
Pros
- Its very quick because of the SSD...boot up takes less than 10 seconds
- Battery life is wonderful
- Very light weight and portable. Its sleek looking and very thin. It does feel and look smaller than a typical 15" inch laptop
Cons:
- I got a blue laptop even though the display pic shows a silver laptop. I think there should be an option to chose a colour if its gonna vary from the display pic. Wasnt a big deal for me though, esp since blue is my fav colour (lucky me!)
- there is no light in the caps lock button. Most ANNOYING thing about this laptop. You would be there typing your password a million times incorrect because of this
- The delete button beside the power button was a bit annoying at first but you get used to it
- The volume could be better
- Also there have been some glitches (like windows explorer fails at times) but I wonder if this is a more a Windows issue. I usually do a restart and its fine
