Fujitsu IX500 Scansnap Document Scanner (PA03656-B305-R) - (Renewed)

Fujitsu IX500 Scansnap Document Scanner (PA03656-B305-R) - (Renewed)

My old scansnap S500 wore out and outlasted three PCs. two laptops, and two shredders.
This IX500 appears willing to best that record. Fujitsu makes great scanners.

These scanners are hardy workhorses and very easy to use. I have had them out in offices for 5+ years without a hitch.

The scanner itself is wonderful. The software to interact with on the computer could use some more instructions.

It works great. Better than the current one I have.

I’ve been considering the purchase of a good standalone network scanner for some time. In researching possible makes/models, I learned that the main companies to choose from are Epson and Fujitsu. One particularly helpful review indicated that the Fujitsu scanners have better build quality and tend to last longer than their Epson counterparts. However, Fujitsu is not TWAIN compatible. So, if there is specific software that you need to use in conjunction with your scanner, you may very well need TWAIN, thus eliminating Fujitsu as an option. However, if you don’t need TWAIN, Fujitsu is likely a better choice.

As for this particular model, I also read that the ix-1500 (updated model) really has no advantage over the ix-500. The ix-1500 has a fancy LCD display, but really adds no additional functionality to the scanner, as all of the scanning options are configured through the software. In that sense, the LCD (with the obligatory circuit board underneath) just adds another possible point of failure. I like bells and whistles as much as the next person, but will take durability, longevity and build quality over fancy cosmetics every time.

The ScanSnap software is very impressive. I am an IT guy, and am not impressed by software that easily. However, Fujitsu has really done it right. You can scan via USB, WiFi or mobile. It can be as simple as loading your documents and pressing the scan button, or you can configure profiles/document types with specific settings for each. Additionally, the profiles you create can be backed up and restored (e.g., imported into another computer, thereby saving you from having to re-create each profile). I have yet to fully configure and utilize the software to its full potential. If I come across anything significant that should be touched upon, I’ll update this review accordingly.

The unit scans documents very quickly and accurately. Duplex scanning is automatic (although this can be changed in the settings). On the evening that I set up the unit, I scanned ~100 pages of old documents, allowing me to retain access thereto and promptly dump the hard copies. I typically do not scan a lot of things, but having a dedicated and easy to use scanner makes life much easier. Rather than firing up a desktop/laptop, loading up the software, inserting the sheets and running the scan, I can now simply put the documents the scanner and hit the scan button. Later on, I can move, rename or otherwise organize the files as I choose.

In closing, this is an excellent scanner. Don’t let the simple design fool you; this is truly a top of the line, full featured unit.
