I bought this remote because I habitually use my Xbox One to watch shows and movies on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. I saw the price of the official Microsoft Media Remote and said "nope". Seriously... $50 for a remote?! Being the reasonable person I am (and that you are since you are looking here), I went with this remote.
I am well pleased with the Talon Media Remote. There was absolutely no setup involved aside from placing the batteries inside it. I have read some reviews complaining that they had troubles with the remote's infrared getting to the console. Personally, this remote is working better than my Vizio TV remote. It may also help that my Xbox is on an open shelf of the TV stand with no interference such as cabinet doors.
The remote itself feels well-made. The material feels soft but has more than adequate grip. The entire backing comes off in order to add or replace batteries, which can be annoying to some, but it really makes the remote look nicer and it feels nicer to hold.
The remote also has a nifty backlighting so you can see in the darkest of times. Others have complained that the backlighting needs to sustain itself for just a little bit longer so they can find their desired button. I had experienced no trouble with that until I really needed the backlighting, and I couldn't agree more- hence the 4 stars instead of 5.
The Xbox "Home" button on the remote can turn on your Xbox which has completely eliminated my need for a controller when I just want to watch a movie or show. And the remote doesn't have to constantly be turned on and connected again when you haven't touched it for so long, unlike the Xbox controllers. That has been most handy for me.
If you want to use a simple, cheaper but well made remote to watch your shows and movies instead of your controller, this is an excellent option!
Hope I could help you with your decision. Godspeed.
This should be the official remote for Xbox one. It has the same feel as the official one with additional functionality. The best part is, it does not nead direct line of sight to work!
I was sceptical about buying this remote because some of the reviews said that the volume controls don't work. I haven't had any issues with volume or any other buttons for that matter, so it might vary for individual set ups.
I highly recommend this remote.
Straight out of the box (after putting in the two included AAA batteries), this thing had full control of my Xbox One S. It makes watching Netflix and Blu-Rays so much easier! As far as I know this is NOT a universal remote but apparently there is an option to control your TV through the Kinect. A) I don't have a Kinect, B) I'm not really interested in controlling my TV with this remote, and C) I've heard that this feature is really unreliable. You'd be better of just using this remote exclusively for your Xbox.
The biggest issue I've had so far is that the CC (closed captioning) button does not seem to work for any of the video apps. Which is lame. I use CC a lot when watching movies or shows. The CC button was one of the main reasons why I bought this, but I can't figure out what it actually works on.
This is the best remote I have used for the Xbox One. The standard smaller remote that is produced by Xbox is good but it does not have as many functional buttons as this remote. If you are watching a streaming service through your Xbox, this remote is the best option out there. I don't use it with a DVR and I have heard some customers have trouble controlling their devices with it. For my purposes it works perfectly and controls my TV as advertised.
I've seen a lot of reviewers complain that the remote works perfectly except for the volume button. I have found that when you point the remote directly at the TV the volume basically never works. HOWEVER, if you point the remote about halfway (45°) either up or down, the volume works almost flawlessly. (feels like it works best when pointing the remote up)
I'm not sure if it's related to why I have the volume issues in the first place, but I use a Vizio sound bar setup. So I'm not sure if people using just TV speakers don't have any issues with the remote.
Otherwise, the remote works great!

Other reviews generally were really happy so I figured I'd try it out. Meets all my needs. Feels so well made. Very pleased I went with this instead of the official Xbox remote.
Remote is a great length. Slightly shorter than my Sony TV remote. Fairly easy to access any button you need (no different than a typical remote of this size). Feel is fantastic with a soft touch coating. Look is very modern with even the battery access being hidden without any noticeable extra lines on the remote. It's clear a good amount of thought and design went into this. My Xbox was already set to control my Sony TV (turn on / turn off with unit) and this remote was set to work with Xbox as soon as the batteries went in, so my default I could control my TV volume with no additional steps. The backlighting on the remote is a nice soft blueish white. More white than blue, but it looks pretty lux.
Only two slight negatives I will mention:
1. The illumination is triggered by motion and as such once you pick it up and stare at it the illuminated keypad almost immediately starts to dim off again. It's a bit odd, almost as though it should stay on longer by default after sensing motion. Is this a dealbreaker? Absolutely not.
2. The center toggle (left, right, up, down) works just fine, but I find the size of my hand and the shape of the remote causes it to "slip" just slightly when I am using that center toggle. I may train myself to hold it in a way to not cause this by default and again. Is this a dealbreaker? Absolutely not.
Overall I do love it and rate it 5 stars as a result.
I've had this remote going on 2 weeks, I was a bit hesitant to purchase it but am glad I made the decision to. It feels very good in the hand, just enough weight to not feel cheap, the buttons have a nice tactile click to them and stick up just enough to navigate the remote without looking at it. The auto backlight is a nice touch for watching movies in the dark though I concerned the battery life will not be as resilient. Our pit mix got ahold of it after a few days and chewed the top causing the home button to stick, 4 screws, a guitar pick (easy disassembly) and x-acto knife later the button is free'd back up and the remote continues to work like a charm.
I noticed a lot of people claiming the remote needs direct line of sight to the Xbox. This is far from true, I can point the remote 180 toward the kitchen and it will still control everything fine. Where I noticed it stops working is if it is behind an object (pillow, couch, person).
I'll update my review if any issues become present.
Before I say anything else I want to say. I waited WAY too long to get a remote for the Xbox One. If you recently got an Xbox One as a gift for someone or for yourself. Buy a remote! especially if you didn't get a play and charge kit, you will be a lot happier overall. It will be worth it later.
I've also included photos of this remote and comparison photos to my other two remotes (Tv remote and Cable remote) along side the MS Media remote.
Quick non-wordy breakdown:
Pros:
- Easy to use.
- Battery saver.
- Great for Media (Netflix, blu-ray, youtube, etc..)
- Backlit for night time visibility (lights up when moved.)
- Comfortable in the hand.
- Didn't cost 25 bucks...
Cons:
- Buttons are very "Firm".
- Backlighting only lasts a few seconds
- Button arrangement/layout leaves something to be desired.
I like the feel of the remote and how brightly it can glow. I also appreciate that it came with a pair of batteries. However, it only stays lit for a few seconds and it dims in like 2-3 seconds leaving you little time to find buttons in the dark if you happen to be looking for a specific button. The top most button "dashboard" button does not light up at all and neither do the A, B, X, and Y buttons. They do have a nice bright paint on them though which is great if you do have light to see them...
It's super easy to use. Just point and click once the batteries are in.
I like the idea that this remote is an all in one including the normal controller buttons. However, I'd really like it if the 'back' button or the B button were closer to the radial selector. I feel like the Microsoft remote has a better overall layout in this regard. It's a lot more like a normal TV remote in the layout making a bit more intuitive to use. I'd also like to say that the buttons, especially the radial selector are a bit firm. By that I mean the force needed to actually press the button is more than I'd like it to be. Feels like I have to press through the layer of silicone or rubber material in order to press it. In comparison, the Microsoft remote while similar is still much easier to press the buttons on. (Not a huge problem but definitely something I'm not a fan of.)
I like how it feels in my hand and the material feels the same overall as the Microsoft Media remote. If I was to break this down into a price basis. You technically get a lot more for the same overall quality and feel as the Microsoft Media remote. However, I do not have my cable hooked up into the Xbox One so I cannot test that portion and I'm not sure how useful the added buttons like the number pad really are. Apparently, I cannot even turn the volume up or down unless this is done. A huge drawback.
I will update this later when I route the cable into the xbox and try using the media controls that way.
Amazing! Outstanding! I have an XBOX ONE, Westinghouse TV, and Xfinity cable box. I don’t have a Kinect, so I got IR blasters to signal the remote to my TV and Cable Box (an extra $6 accessory, no biggie). IMPORTANT NOTE: IR nodes must be placed DIRECTLY over the IR emitters in the TV and Cable box. I looked up a diagram of where they are located on both the TV and Cable box when I had an issue with my volume control not working and channel changing was sketchy. IR node placement fixed the problems. Now everything is seemless! It works with tv controls (including power and volume), has a really cool TV guide with the option to favorite (guide varies by region), and the usual Xbox controls. First time in my life I have one controller for all of my entertainment, and quick access to a pause button!
The remote it’s self feels extremely nice, better than I expected. It’s backlit, and has all of the buttons needed for XBOX, BLU Ray, and TV controls. Fantastic purchase. Highly recommend.
This remote is great for me. My husband and I are currently living with family while our house is being built. We occupy a small room with our 2 dogs. We were not about to sign a contract for satellite or cable TV for the few months we are here so I decided to check out Hulu. It suits our needs for the time being. The only problem was using our XBox One S controller. The controller is very touchy like if you tossed it on the bed, you ran the chance of one of the toggles getting pressed. Then the show we were watching would rewind, ff, pause, or whatever. Also the controller would turn off too quickly (I know.... to save battery life). It just became a pain and frustrating to continue to use the controller for anything other than game playing.
This remote is great for my use. When I got it I was all ready to program my Samsung TV for volume, etc. Well I didn't have to! It recognized my TV right away and programmed itself! First time ever an electronic did that for me!
The ONLY thing that I don't like is how quickly the backlight turns off. Now that I am getting familiar with the button locations it is not that big of deal. But my first few day I was constantly shaking it while I searched for the right button.
