This VHF Radio is compact and loaded with features.
I doubt very much that most of us will ever use them, but they are nice to have.
If you are considering the GX1600 model without the integrated GPS because you want to save some money...DON'T DO IT!!
Save your self some major headaches in having to receive the GPS signal from a plotter and get the GX1700 model.
Also, as we stress among scuba divers...REDUNDANCY....do NOT rely on your plotter only for a GPS signal!
It's always better to have a SEPARATE and independent source ......it only makes sense.
The installation was child's play...the hardest part was making a template to cover up the existing glove compartment hole and fit the GX1700.
So far I like this radio, although I haven't used it exclusively yet. The speaker is garbage & feel this could of been made better, very tinty sounding & cracks at high volumes, there is a ext speaker wire for optional speaker. Have not tried it out in the sun yet but would assume the glare will be a issue , I made a anti glare & water proof box for the unit cause I read water resistant this unit is not. The gps reception is very good as soon as the transceiver is on it finds a signal right away. Menus are pretty user friendly just use your manual & play around with it a little. All & all for a 200$ radio with gps not bad, we will see the durability in the future. Update. Registered my mmsi number and input it into the radio ,this opens up so many communication options ,dcs is awesome on this radio and a big sense of security to boot . My clarity is wonderful and reccomend hooking up a ext speaker makes the receive experience that much better. Really enjoying learning all the capabilitys of this dynamite of a radio & I recommend it.
This VHF radio is great, and easy to use. directions are pretty clear and are step by step. the GPS being built in is a huge plus. salmon fishing on Lake Michigan can take you pretty far out and if you run into trouble its nice to be able to communicate. i highly recommend the GX1700. on a side note don't skimp on the Antenna, get a good one, i suggest Shakespeare Galaxy series.
Works great.
The GPS function worked fine without the need for an external antenna and the Radio is inside the boat not too far from the roof.
Lot's of features for a very reasonable price! So far the sound quality and loudness is o.k. in our Express Cruiser. Radio is located in a protected open area. Built in GPS is a great feature as a back up GPS!

This a GREAT BUY! No need to interface my GPS and VHF Radio...this unit does it all...even tells the local time, easy to install, very compact
The features on this unit are top notch. And GPS works great. A serious upgrade from my prior radio. GPS on marine radios should become the standard for all.
Standard Horizon VHF radios are among the best made radios on the market and this one is another excellent one. Like all modern DSC+ radios it is a complex thing and takes time to program and set up. But once you have it up and running and you've learned the key menu items, it is a great radio. We have been using it for a year and I have found no bugs or problems.
As desribef
this is the best radio i have ever used. locks on the gps quickly and clear as a bell. has great reception and power for longer transmissions.
