Somehow our one speaker on our 2007 Cobalt boat got broken. I searched for a replacement and they are not made anymore. These are the new ones that Sony makes so we bought them. We had been to a couple boat stores and looked at different ones and even bought a different make and installed them but the sound was not great and was much more expensive. My husband returned those and ordered these off Amazon. They are the perfect fit for replacing the old ones and were much easier to install than the other brand. The sound is excellent and they look really nice. Since they are slightly different than the old version, we installed these two in the bow of the boat and kept the others in the back. We do spend a lot of time on our boat in the summer and it is nice to have music. I do think this new version will be stronger especially with the thick plastic across the center of each speaker.
This company is reliable, reasonably priced, delivers the product securely packaged and on time as promised. I just hope I get more use out of these speakers than the last pair I purchased. The previous SONY speakers quit working in just a little over a year from date of installation. When I say "quit working" I mean they are DEAD -- failed continuity test. Poor quality when you consider the speakers are enclosed inn a cabinet under a SUNBRELLA bimini top and are used less than 30 hours. The AM/FM/CD receiver is 14 years old and works perfectly as well as the speakers in the interior of the boat.
I ordered these speakers to install on the outside of my motor home, but by the time I received them, I had decided to go with a different option. I contacted Amazon to return the speakers (shipping at my expense), and was informed that Amazon cannot accept these back because they are a hazardous material. The reality is that the speakers have magnets (Duh!) and cannot be shipped by air as stated on the package I received. They are not a personal chemical or bio hazard. When I chatted with Amazon about this, they suggested that I read the product page on the website, paying attention to any return limitations. When I did this, I found no mention whatsoever that the units were a hazard and cannot be returned. Amazon reviewed the page and came to the same conclusion. In the end, Amazon did resolve this issue in a way that was beneficial to me, so for that, I am pleased. In the end, I did install the speakers in my motor home and I am quite pleased with the quality of the speakers and the sound.
The speakers fit in the existing holes on the rear deck of my boat but the screw holes were slightly different. They covered the old speaker's footprint so there was no evidence of the old speakers. I found the tone and frequency response to be good and I could get plenty of volume before any distortion . I liked the black against the white leather of my rear deck trim, the bar across the center protects the grill and speakers from damage and also the snap in screw covers on the speaker rim. Overall a good speaker for the price.
These speakers replaced my previous Sony speakers in my boat. I had to make zero modifications for the fit and the mounting screws lined up perfectly. The old speakers still worked but the grills had become damaged over the years. Those speakers were all-in-ones so replacing just the grill was impossible. This model has replaceable grills...much better.
