Recently I noticed new Crazy Korean Cooking product non gmo gochugaru fine grind and coarse grind and I bought them one of each. It is so convenient that they come in a bottle unlike other brand gochugaru. I mixed half fine grind and half coarse grind to make kimchi seasoning. It is the best kimchi I made ever!
Used in Korean dishes. There really is no replacement if you are following a korean recipe. Red Pepper Flakes are Red Pepper Flakes, does not hold true. There is a certain heat level (I think more medium) and more importantly, taste, associated with Korean Red pepper Flakes. I find however, I don't use a ton of them, so buying a large bag in an asian grocery, they go bad over time and I end up throwing them out. This is a good compromise for me, fits in the fridge without taking up a lot of room (think medium squeezable relish bottle), and I have what I need for how I cook. I might make a single container (medium size) of Kimchi, or a dinner where I need a teaspoon to a tablespoon of this type of red pepper, this works great for that. Plus it has the proper flavor. I think it could use a touch more heat, but that might be just me.
To me this is in the lower medium category of heat.
This made the best Kimchee ever in my fermenter. Flavor is spot on and just not over the top hot. If I added more it would be there in two seconds, but flavor and not extreme heat was my goal. Nailed it.
I have become addicted to this stuff! Someone told me they make cucumber kimchi with it so I made some & fell in love! Now I put it on/in EVERYTHING!!
I needed this product for a Korean style recipe. I ended up using more due to a general lack of spiciness so I managed to use half the bottle after making the recipe twice now. I think the flavor is good and you can definitely choose to use less if you don't like dishes so spicy. I think this was the cheapest version I could find on Amazon and overall I think it was a decent find.

Description
Non-GMO Korean pepper flakes powder, coarse ground 10 Mesh, 8000-12000 SHU. Crazy Korean Cooking Non-GMO Gochugaru is one of the highest quality gochugaru in the market. The flavor is spicy and the color is vibrant. It consists of 100% red chili pepper and does not contain salt or dye (red coloring). Perfect for making kimchi. Some people mix coarse grind gochugaru with fine grind gochugaru when making kimchi because it can give more vibrant color (especially for radish kimchi). Red chili pepper flake ("Gochugaru" in Korean) is one of the key ingredients in Korean cooking. It cannot be replaced with chili flakes or sauces from other cultures when cooking authentic Korean food. Best for making kimchi, korean fried chicken, spicy rice cake (tteokbokki) and spicy chicken, spicy pork marinade.
I'm a fan of HOT chile, and this is WARM -- but so flavorful that I may come to use it on everything. I tasted it right from the jar and was hooked. It won't replace cayenne or chipotle, but will augment or stand alone.
This seems like a lot for the price compared to other spices I have bought. This was my first opportunity to use this spice. Unfamiliar with it, I made a rather popular chicken wing recipe. I felt stupid for ever getting takeout! It tasted as good as any restaurant.
I really like the NON-GMO aspect of this Korean red pepper flake. Beautiful red flakes. Convenient bottle to carry with me to the office so that I can shake some pepper flake on my lunch.
Can't wait to try this out love Korean food.
if you like it hot and sweet this is for you. is fresh tasting and potent. I had never tried Gochugaru before but I am so glad I did. I use it now for all my spicy hot foods.
