Edit: Server acquired from TechMikeNY, other sellers YMMV.
So I never thought I would be buying a used server on Amazon, but I’m glad I did.
Why did I have a server shipped across the country when I have perfectly good refurbishers nearby?
One word: Quality.
I wanted a working machine not a project, and that’s exactly what I got. Ran the server through her paces. Memtest86+ for 2 days and a cpu/io bench test for another day with 0 problems reported. All firmware was up to date as well, saving me a _ton_ of setup time. RAID controller came pre-configured with a RAID1 on primary disks, and RAID0 on secondary.
Was up and running with my preferred virtualization platform in about an hour after testing.
Pros:
Hardware received is _exactly_ as listed
Server is super CLEAN (I work with new datacenter hardware regularly, this refurb server was an impressive level of clean)
Included rails
Included Hard drives/caddies
Included blanks for unused drive bays
Good packing
New thermal paste used on CPUs
All firmware updated - DRAC was a minor release behind, but not a big deal
Cons:
DRAC Express - Needed enterprise and didn’t realize; a $20 purchase fixed that
No bezel (I don’t really care, some may)
Long shipping distance for me, but worth it for a clean, tested, working server.
My unit arrived looking like new and in excellent shape. I've been working on it for a while now, setting it up and learning about servers for my IT training. Fortunately, DELL still provides all of the downloads and manuals for this unit. I am completely happy with this order. Customer service was perfect, too.
This bad boy just arrived in the mail today and it is quite a thing of beauty! I turned it on and ran some of my home-brewed cpu and hardware test and it really shines. I really regret not getting a rack server for the house sooner. At this price you are better getting this than spending time engergy and cash fandangling performance out of individual or clustered RPIs or old laptops and with the power it has, I'll be moving a lot of my work work to it to. lol Surprisingly, the best part comes from that fact that a couple bits were missing (2 of the smaller drives and the rails). I felt bad because I was probably calling 5 minutes before the shop closes down but the guy on the phone was super nice and told me they will get the parts in the mail right away. I expected so much more fuss than that! Great server and service!!! (P.S. If you need a laugh, peep the photo comparing this bad boy and the home server it is replacing.)
