Silicon Power 1TB Rugged Portable External Hard Drive Armor A30, Shockproof USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, Xbox and PS4, Black

Silicon Power 1TB Rugged Portable External Hard Drive Armor A30, Shockproof USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, Xbox and PS4, Black

Purchased this in August 2014, and it is now May of 2017. Fortunately it still works and has never given me any problems. the sides where you can attach the USB cord is genius and convenient! I travel with this everywhere, so sometimes it gets bumped on the plane, fall on the cement, etc. so I am lucky that it is shock proof.

I am planning on buying naother, and I highly recommend it!

Works like a charm with no drama. It's my archived data storage M-14 now (except the magazine does not drop out when you least expect it). .

Whatever you do, never ever forget to format your new external hard drive or USB stick prior to loading data onto it unless you want to spend three days finding out how to use freeware data retrieval programmes. Sounds obvious but it is easy to forget to do so. You only forget to do so when you load essential data onto it then your computer tells you that it cannot read the external drive.

Running as expected after 2 weeks of use. Have this plugged in to my main computer; synchronizes with another 1TB internal hard drive as a backup; this is the drive where I store media and archived files. The drive comes formatted as FAT or FAT32 which can't handle files larger than ~4GB. A quick NTFS format would be very quick. FYI it took a few hours for a *full* NTFS format. That isn't really necessary for the first format since it's a new drive. I did it anyway. Took about 1 to 2 hours to fill it up with ~700GB of data from my internal drive. Search google for "freefilesync" for the free software to sync files easily. Be sure to "uncheck" the bloatware during the installation and you're good.

This setup allows me to disconnect the external drive and basically have all my favorite stuff to take it to a friend's house or to my office whenever I want. The cord-holding corners seem to work fine. I haven't bought an extra carrying since it's rated to be shock resistant. I'm still wary of shock damage while transporting and stuff, but I feel a bit more confident in this design than a regular portable drive casing. Since it's a similar price, I thought it would be worth it.

I've just had this device for a few days, and it's working like a champ so far. I like the exterior design, and the (reputed) robustness of its shock proofing.

The only bone I've got to pick with this drive is its interface -- it uses a USB 3.0 A-to-A cable, which is pretty unusual. So it's good that the case includes cable management clips, because if you lose the cable when you're on a trip somewhere, you may have trouble finding a replacement. Of course, they're easily / cheaply purchased on Amazon and other online sites, but I'd rather not have to carry yet another spare cable on my trips to the boonies.

I have a small computer business and suggest external drives all the time for my clients that have so much to loose if their computers take a crap ... so yes I push these external drives all the time ... I used to use the Transend but I like these more because if the USB being the same universal large end on both sides unlike the Transend being the small form factor on t he device end and not holding up as well as these Silicon Power's do !
Thanks again Amazon ... great product for the money too !

UPDATE - more than three years of use on the first of the two I have. Both have been used as file backup drives and normally protected in semi-hard shell cases. Both are still working fine. Like all the cool kids I've gone to multiple redundancy for important file backups.

Original:

Have used mine (I have two) on travel for more than two years and they have done well for multiple redundancy backup. When the prices for equivalent capacity SSD devices come down, I'll probably move that way. But for the time being these have been reliable and decently quick even with USB 2.0 interfaces.

I really like how the cord can be attached to the body; I always lost it with my previous hard drive. It's very convenient. Storage capacity is great. I also like how I can just put it in my bag without worrying too much about anything messing up its structure.

The reason I give it 4 stars is that it's not USB 3.0. It's a lot slower. Mind you, it's not so slow that it bothers me, but it's definitely not 3.0. My previous hard drive was a Seagate (physical structure got dented easily), and that took less than a minute to copy 100 good quality pictures. This one takes 2-3 minutes for the same amount and quality. It doesn't bother me too much because I'm patient and I value its physical lifespan a lot more. I want to save and keep my data.

I would recommend this because that's my only gripe. The price is pretty nice, too.

Awesome product! Stellar quality; sturdy and rugged. I'm a DJ and use this during my gigs and believe me, this product can definite take a hit or drop. Very nice design; the cord attachment slots around the device are great, nice and snug. I've had this drive for a while now and I haven't encounter any problems as of yet. I definitely recommend this product.

I go through Hard Drives like they are candy, all because of the cable connecting to the actual drive. I guess I'm hard on them. I decided enough was enough and went for a drive with a usb to usb cable. I received the drive today and just signed in for the warranty registration. super easy. I'm currently downloading my files from my old drive to the new one. Everything seems to be transferring fast, so that's good. I have about 11 hours left (650GB) to transfer, but if anything goes weird or if there are any hangups, i'll add to this review.

other than that, the drive seems rugged with it's rubberized exterior. I like the fact that the cable has a place to be kept on the drive when not in use. It's a bit bulky from the sleeker versions I have had in the past, but obviously I need something a bit more meaty and rugged (and not just in my taste for the manfolk. haha.....ahhem...anywhooooo).

Just got it - so can't comment on durability and dependency. Design is good. Speed is good - they don't provide actual speed specification. I copied few hundred GB on it and the average speed was 60-70 MB/s. The only thing - I reformatted it to NTFS, while it was originally FAT32, as I think. Not sure if I was right about it but otherwise it didn't allow me to copy some of my files because their size "exceeded limits for disk's format".
