Had this a couple of weeks now. It does everything I expected and hoped for. I've used it for typed documents, 3x5 and 4x6 cards, and 2.5x6 inch photos. They all pass through with few problems. With the cards, sometimes it couldn't grab the top card and paused, but you just take out the cards, maybe add a few more at the back of the stack, and replace, and it gets going again (two screen clicks are necessary to do this, however--it ought to restart immediately when another stack is inserted in the intake).
The software, CaptureOnTouch, is not intuitive for anything but routine letter paper-sized documents, and the help file and manual are pathetic. There are a lot of sub-menus, one set for managing the input and another for the output. There are no step by step job-oriented instructions: for example, "How do I scan a box of 3x5 cards as individual jpg images in a specific folder?" Instead, it describes each menu, sub-menu, and menu item in a few words, often with a verbal wave of the hand, not always explaining what function the adjustment serves. You have to read carefully through all the options and try different combinations. The labels on the menu items often don't give a clue as to what the function does. And, the English is not good.
But, you can save each input setup and each output setup, so that when you do the same job again you can just click on two squares and then the scan button. If the machine jams, which is quite rare, you can easily open it, replace the input documents and click to resume scanning. It needs to be opened and cleaned after a thousand pages or so, with compressed air to blow the paper dust away; otherwise it becomes increasingly hard for it to grab the next page to scan.
I wish there was a special forum just for this scanner where users could share their experiences.
But, one can't have it all.
I'm using this to digitize my life -- tax returns since the 1980s, rental property info, financial records, etc.! It installed easily -- I'm using Windows 10 and I was operational within about an hour. I've done about 10,000 pages with very few problems -- staples, crumpled paper and the like -- all things I should have fixed before I did the scanning. The software is great -- I scan to PDF files stored on my desktop, then rename and migrate them to permanent storage -- I'm saving multiple copies -- online, cloud and USB drives! Already have more than 4 GB of data! While I'm scanning, I've found that the software presents it correctly but when opening the PDF files later using Adobe Acrobat, I sometimes have to rotate the view - no big deal. Another thing I like about the software is that it senses whether there's anything on the back of a page and scans/doesn't scan as appropriate -- GREAT! I like this so much, I'm thinking about buying another to keep in case this one ever breaks down! I know that there's a version that's Internet enabled, but I'm comfortable with the USB 2.0 connection. I thought that it might be a bit slow and that a USB 3.0 connection might be better, but it's very fast -- it's rated at 20 ppm, and it does that -- front and back simultaneously.
Great hardware. I have scanned folded and crumpled letter and legal size documents, as well as various sizes of paper and cards like driver license and business cards. All scanned well and quickly with few jams.
Software is good. I already had Paperport 14, so I skipped that. Canon's Capture on Touch is pretty good, once you figure it out and set up the profiles you want. You can set it up to create a separate pdf for each page or all pages into one pdf file, color, B&W, greyscale or automatic. I found that using B&W on a crumpled carbon copy on pink paper removed the color and the wrinkles. Very pleased with the scanner and software.
Drivers are an issue. I installed it on Windows 7. When I upgraded to Windows 10 the computer could not find the scanner. I emailed customer support and got a reply in a couple of hours (on a Sunday!) that there was no Win10 driver yet; as a current product it would probably get one, but no ETA available. So kudos for a prompt response, a Bronx cheer for its content.
I resolved my driver issue by using a NextBook that is running Windows 8.1. Driver and Capture on Touch work fine, and I set up the profiles to save to a folder on OneDrive. Then I go to the Win10 computer and move the file to other folders on that computer. It works, but I am looking forward to the Win10 driver. Another reviewer indicates that Canon expects to release the driver in 2 - 3 weeks.
When the Win10 driver is released, and I determine that it works property, I think I will increase my rating to 5 stars. I am debating whether or not to knock off a star for what appears to be an habitual delay in developing drivers for new operating systems that other manufacturers do not seem to encounter. Googling revealed a similar delay in delivering drivers when Windows 8 came out.
UPDATE 8/29/15: Windows 10 driver and software are out. I haven't tried them because I dropped back to Windows 7. There were just too many articles about Windows 10 phoning home with all kinds of information for me to feel comfortable. So I have given it 5 stars because it is a great scanner.
This is a very intelligent little machine and I highly recommend it. I would give 5 stars except the paper feed can be a little more finicky than my old Fujitsu ScanSnap and also now when I open a scanned doc, it appears several software programs must be activated in order to open the doc so it takes longer each time I open one that I've scanned. For Example on paper feed: it might scan a page but the machine stops at the end of the page with a "double feed" error when the paper has uneven edges like an envelope, or if I use a fax document carrier. It should give you the option to save that image but it doesn't. If you change the scanner feeding setting from "detect by ultrasonic" to "detect by Length" then it will take thicker or rougher edged pages or clear fax carrier sheets. This Canon is easier to scan a credit card than my old Fujitsu ScanSnap as long as you set the paper exit switch on lower right corner in the down position so your feed comes out the bottom of the machine and doesn't try to curl it back up into the front holding tray.
I have used this for several weeks now and have scanned thousands of documents with it. Setup was fairly easy enough - it took me several tries, but I am not super tech-savvy. If you have the patience for the slightly longer processing time, the highest resolution looks pretty great. Very few issues with double-feeds, jams, etc. It does not "like" to do double-page scanning (i.e., receipt taped onto a full page) but with taping all edges of the receipt down, it will work most of the time. The size is perfect - as pictured, it fits right on top of my printer so doesn't take up any additional desk space.

Description
The Canon image DR-C225 Document Scanner's innovative, space-saving design makes it a stand out in any office environment for improving information accessibility, management, and collaboration. Its flexibility and high image quality are only surpassed by its easy use, making it ideal for converting and capturing paper-based documents to digital format.
This is an awesome scanner. I haven't used the Fujitsu scansnap ix500 which is (apparently) this scanner's closest rival. However, I went with the Canon because I wanted a smaller footprint for the desk in our kitchen. I'm planning on going paperless with this scanner for all our mail / documents. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it doesn't have wifi or bluetooth. I don't love having to have it plugged in via USB, but it is worth the smaller footprint and vertical U feature that spits the paper back up vertically so that you don't have to worry about how the paper will spit out in front. It's nice though that you can adjust it to spit out the front if you have a thicker document or business card, notecard, etc.
I plan to scan mostly to PDF and the file sizes, text quality, and OCR recognition at the default levels is really good. I didn't even need to adjust the defaults until I wanted to scan our property tax receipt which is a weird multi-page stuck (glued) together but not full size sheet. The software kept telling me that it detected a double feed scan and it would abort (even though I adjusted the U turn thing to feed straight through and the switch on the right side was up, so the indicator showed orange which is supposed to not separate the pages when feeding). It took some fiddling to figure out but all I needed to do was add another shortcut that had the advanced settings enabled with 'Double Feed Detection' disabled.
All and all I'm very happy with the speed and quality that this scanner provides.
There is a lot to like about this scanner. I ultimately returned mine due to frequent feed issues. However, the software is fantastic. I do wish higher resolution scans were possible (max 600dpi). Also, needs to be cleaned very frequently as the smallest particle of dust or grit sticks to the glass segment and leaves long and very noticeable lines on your scans. If they would recess the glass a few millimeters it would help keep dust from collecting and effecting scans.
I love everything about this scanner, I had used one previously and while it took me a while to commit to purchasing my own it was well worth purchasing. The only reservation I had was quite simply the price, but the amount of time it has saved me while scanning documents can be viewed as time equals money. I love the fact that I can scan driver's licenses, business cards, overlength forms and option between having them come out the bottom or loop back up. It's software is extremely easy to use, I would like it if the software gave me the option of being able to scan directly to the cloud, more specifically SharePoint but regardless, I still really really enjoy this scanner.
I have tried a wide variety of documents, photos and business cards including licenses. Very impressed with the basic machine which handles everything very well and fast with amazing resolution and accuracy. The manual is truly awfully and should be rewritten. Working through the manual you learn the concepts as you go more by trial and error but the response from Canon Support has been very good with explanations that should be in the manual. Suggesting a back up half way through the manual after you have played with most settings was not constructive! So far very pleased with the machine which is being used in home office. So far 4 large sacks to the shredder and finding documents is a breeze and time saver.
Amazed by the speed and convenience vs. flat bed scanner without autofeed. Automatically straightens out documents that are fed slightly tilted. Scans double-sided documents and name cards at once. However, works mostly with flat, uniform documents. If you have a post it stuck on the paper or the paper is not uniform, it will give feeder error. If you want to scan a slightly thick box, won't work. Photo scans are not high quality. Occasionally, it misreads orientation of the paper and I need to use a separate software to correct orientation of document. If the paper is too long, it will also give an error. Very happy with the scanner, but still need to keep my flatbed scanner.
