Received this yesterday evening and made about 30 labels last night and love love love it!! I didn’t even look at the directions as it was that simple to figure out.
For those talking about wasted tape, I saw what you meant on the first label printed. To easily resolved this problem:
1. Click function button, scroll to “CUT OPTION” and click “chain” (my favorite).
If making multiple labels, click “small margin” if you’re only printing one or 2.
On “TAB LENGTH”, scroll down until it reaches “0.0” if you don’t want any excess on the side.
And last but not least, after you have made your desired label go to “LENGTH” and keep reducing it until it pops up and says “letters to big, long, etc”, and then click it one up until is accepted, doing it this way assures me that I have it as compacted as possible to avoid any waste whatsoever. Unless I have a specific length that I want and I design my letter size, shape (font), frames etc to fit within the boundaries.
Once you have the settings how you like it, click the “FN” button, scroll to the bottom and click on “SAVE” and store the settings on the number you choose because otherwise you have to repeat the same process each time you create a new label.
I haven’t had any waste whatsoever since I made these adjustments.
My only complaint is that the Automatic Settings go to the highest margin, tabs and length setting, which undoubtedly is to sell more product.
Hope this easy solution helps resolve the problems you’ve been encountering.
You might want to consider if you should buy a label maker or not. It's not quality, this thing is just fantastic. It's a little tank and keeps on printing. it's so good you'll find yourself prowling around the house looking for things to slap a label on. It gets a bit addicting. Worse well with the power supply or batteries.
I'm getting comic book collection organized (>20,000 comics) , and slapping a label on a divider just makes everything look that much extra awesome.
BTW, I bought some 3rd party JARBO labels. A 4 pack of White and a 5 pack with multiple colors. The colors are reflected on the screen just like the official label tapes are. I was constantly swapping between three labels: Thick white labels that came with the printer, thin white ones, and a color. The only problems I had is the red label tape got jammed up, but it was over half used up by that time. I've used 3 white ones and half the yellow w/o any problems. Considering how inexpensive the JARBO labels are, I recommend that you look into them. They are the perfect complement to the printer. The only downside is you have LOTS of label tape, so you'll go around looking for MORE THINGS to label.
I spent an afternoon hunting up every power supply/adapter in the house and slapping a label on them. When you slap a "labelmaker" label on the label maker's power supply, you know you've got a problem.
Don't say I didn't warn you!
I love my new label maker. This is my first one and it works great. It came with a 24 mm tape and I used all of it in one night labeling my homemade essential oil blends. I reordered more tapes. The keyboard is large and easy to type. It has label and print display. I saved my labels in a file for easy retrieval later on. I'm very happy to own this product. The 24 mm tape has up to 7 lines of text. The 18 mm tape has up to 5 lines of text. I love the font, symbol, and frame settings. It has a minimum of 6 point font size to 48 point. See attached photos.
I purchased this product from Staples back in January 2016. By far, this has been the most versatile labeler I've purchased to date (at least at a decent price)! I used this for labels, mailings, and filings. I highly recommend this if your a small-time entrepreneur (or any person for that matter) that needs a ton of labeling done on a consistent basis. Believe me when I say... "you wont need anything else".
My only complaint (and my reason for docking a star) is due to the waste of potential paper I could've used towards making additional labels (see picture). After toying around with the settings for several hours, I've finally come to the conclusion that this P-Touch will simply leave a huge gap in between labels. However, this drawback is very much like many other labelers Ive used... so I cant be too harsh! I just wish these companies made labelers that were more friendly in the "paper efficiency department."
Revised from below: Incredible software but buggy. Maybe overly ambitious. Not sure was tested very much with the major issues having to do with the data base and saving labels. Have tested on several computers with the same problems.
Usable mostly but like I said, amazingly functionality especially compared with Dymo's software. Might be a win 10 issue. Desperately needs an update for fixes = PLEASE. Unit wastes about 3/4" per label which is not unusable. However, the waste pieces are cut off for you and ejected like "shell casings". This means you don't have to trim the labels like with Dymo. Lastly, be sure to remove the plastic film from display since it's hard to see and causes "rainbows".
----------------------------------------------- Original review - still holds ------------------------------
To qualify my comments, I own several Dymo, Brother, and Panasonic labelers, some much more expensive (all good products from good companies), but this Brother is a real winner. Even though I have only had the unit for a relatively short period of time, I felt compelled to point out a couple of issues to prospective buyer. These issue don not detract from the excellent functionality, value, and quality of the unit. Just some things you need to know going in. First, the power adapter uses a negative center pin (as does DYMO!). There is absolutely no good reason for this except to force buyers to buy their power adapter if they lose the one it comes with and it is dangerous since because it uses a common size jack and voltages, customers might be tempted or accidentally plug in an power adapter from another product (like an external hard drive). Plugging in an adapter with the normal center positive pin could easily burn the unit out (unless it has reverse polarity protection, which I wouldn't test). I would suggest labeling their adapter as having a negative center pin. You can easily use a normal 12v 2Amp power adapter by using a reverse polarity adapter which Amazon sells for a few dollars. The other issue is that the color display screen is protected by two, one, plastic film layers. This is good except everyone else uses one and they don't mention this. I removed the first layer, turned the unit on, and thought that the unit was defective since the screen was dim and had lines going through it. By accident, I noticed a second plastic film covering the display which caused the problem (usually the film does not affect displays and protects against scratches). The third issue is that to insert the tape cartridge, you open a rear lid to expose the tape cartridge bay. It is not obvious how you open the rear lid, nor is anything mentioned about this in the manual or online. The answer is that you open the rear lid by firmly pulling up on an indented side tab. You have to pull firmly and then you will hear a loud crack like you snapped off some plastic latch. However, there is no release button and you just pull up, hear the crack, and then it pivots to the rear. To be fair, these are minor and this is an excellent unit, as mentioned, much better than the Dymo, certainly at this price point. It is well made and has an amazing variety of functions (including vertical or sideways print for labeling cables using 1" tape - equivalently priced Dymo units can do neither!). In fact, the main challenge is forcing yourself to spend the time to learn the various functions (although you don't have to if all you want to do is print simple labels since it starts up in "simple print label" mode). You can run the unit on batteries if you want (6 AA batteries, not some expensive rechargeable battery). The reason it needs 6 AA's is that it takes a lot of power to index the tape cartridge and cut the tape. The batteries are also needed if you want to retain any templates or settings you have made. The unit can be used quite effectively without connecting it to a computer but I would recommend such since the software (which has to be downloaded from Brother) is fabulous. One last thing is that some have mentioned that the unit wastes tape due to a large leader and trailer. THIS IS TRUE OF THE DYMO UNITS ALSO! The reason is mostly due to the cartridge designs, not necessarily their desire to sell tape. You can buy compatible tape on Amazon for much lower prices. This is the labeler to buy unless you want a small, light weight unit. While portable, it is oriented towards desktop use. (note, I have no connection to Brother and paid full price)

I bought the Brother PTD600 PC Connectible Label maker for being able to import graphics into the labels. I was most impressed with a friend's Brother label printer (that did not import external graphics) and decided to "go big".
Being able to import personal (created ) graphics makes it worth the extra cost. Just my humble opinion.
The Brother software works flawlessly (so far) on my 64bit Windows 7 computer. * As primarily a Linux user I (and other Linux users) can only wish for full Linux support for such great devices!!! Brother, are you listening? Please!
Got this to replace a 20 year old P-touch to save cost on label tape. Some of the features are nice and the tape is less expensive but I have not figured out how to make a label with a simple square boarder yet. There are lost of fancy frames and templates built in but, it is more difficult to use than the old one and doesn't do as well with simple labels. Like smartphones that get better and better at everything else but are less and less effective as a phone.
I was expecting this to use less tape. My 20 year old label maker always had a 3/4" lead that was not printed and usually needed to be cut off. This label maker still has the 3/4" blank lead but it cuts that off automatically, and cuts at the end of the print too. I would have thought in 20 years they would have come up with a way to not waste 3/4" on ever print, but then again that would eat into their tape sales.
I like that it connects to the computer and I have found that using the computer software is easier than just making a label. I also like that it recognizes the size of the tape that is installed.
Would I recommend this label maker? That is difficult to answer because there are simpler ones to use. I think it does a good job. If you want to create your labels on you PC and print them this is the way to go. If you just want a simple portable label printer I would suggest you look at other models.
Don't have any problems with my PTD600 so far. Battery is NOT included. I just took a picture so you may see it runs on 6 AA batteries. USB cable, adapter, and one 24mm tape is included.
Unless you happen to be on OS8 or OS9. Duh! Decades old software? You've got to be kidding! There is a Brother PT-D600.app, but it's useless, too. They're pretty up to date for PCs and have lots of PC additions for design add-ons. It seems the person at Brother in charge of this product line doesn't give a S#it. Great Label maker, but without any Mac software, is limited to what you can do. Totally and completely disappointed with Brother.
Works great, just as expected. Initially had problems using the software I downloaded from Brother. Called them for better clarification and they were able to help. Also purchased extra tapes from Amazon who had the best price - very reasonable. I am happy and pleased so far with this product.
If you need to label your personal home or work equipment this is the way to go. The only con is to get used to using the software so that your description fits on the label when it prints. This gets a little getting used to, but once you get past this it will become a valuable tool for you.
