ASUS VS228H-P 21.5" Full HD 1920x1080 HDMI DVI VGA Back-lit LED Monitor

ASUS VS228H-P 21.5

Go to your NVIDIA control panel, and click on "Change resolution" under Display. Scroll down, click on "Output dynamic range" and set it to full. I've included a picture for help with this. It should fixed colors that look washed out, without having to modify any color settings. If you already made some, I suggest you factory reset your monitor (in the menus) as it will look strange after doing this. Other than that problem, this monitor looks great! Also, you shouldn't have to worry if you're using DVI.

I Love it! (Pictures included)

Purchased on 5/31, Arrived 6/09.
(9 Days) was free shipping over $49.
-Box arrived undamaged.

Upon opening the box, it had all components. Nicely individually wrapped. It included
-Stand
-Monitor
-Power cable
-DVI cable
-VGA cable
-ASUS VIP Member Notice
-Quick Start Guide.

After taking everything out of the box it was EXTREMELY easy to assemble. I can't stress that enough, a 12 year old could figure it out. The cords had caps on them to prevent dust and bending of the pins but again were simple to take off.

On the back of the monitor, it had
-HDMI port
-DVI port
-VGA port
-3.5mm audio port. (Needs input from HDMI cable)

After putting it all together, the final product was beautiful.
-It worked perfectly!
-There were no dead pixels.
-The colors were vibrant.
-The images and letters were sharp.
-The picture is just amazing.
-The quality is outstanding.
It was just perfect. I LOVE this product and I'm 100% completely satisfied with my purchase. I did not receive a discount for my review either.

I would DEFINITELY recommend.

UPDATE: It's been a month since I purchased it and still had no problems with it.

I bought a pair of these to use with my 21.5" 2012 iMac, which Apple in their infinite wisdom, opted not to make matching lightning display for. These are a near perfect match in terms of color, pixel density, resolution and size.

In addition to the monitor, the package included a 6' VGA cable and a 6' DVI cable, which I hadn't expected. It seems like most manufacturers these days sell you electronics but then expect you to go buy the necessary cables - however, the Asus monitor came with these. It does not include an HDMI cable, but I already have a couple of spare. Since I wasn't expecting the VGA cable, I separately bought one of those for use with my older corporate laptop.
The stand is extremely simple to install. I especially like the "no tools" screw, which has a small flip-up flat piece that allows you to tighten the screw entirely by hand.
The monitor adjusts to between about -5 degrees forward tilt (if you wanted to put it up on a shelf above eye level) to about 10 degrees backwards tilt (for a tall person with a monitor on a low desk.
No significant color/brightness issues. It is easily viewable with only slight color fading at up to about 30 degrees off-angle.
Picture quality is excellent - no appreciable lags or artifacts in videos and resolution with a 10 Megapixal camera image was sharp and clear.
As soon as I connected the VGA cable and turned on the monitor, it appeared, automatically sync'ed and adjusted to my laptop display resolution.
All I had to do was tell Windows how I wanted the monitors arranged (extend desktop and put second monitor to left of primary laptop).
Setup took less than 10 minutes, including unpacking, installing base, plugging in and configuring Windows.
The default setup is quite bright, but I found that their "sRGB" mode produced a very nice level of brightness. There are several "standard" modes of display - "theater", "game", "scenery", and "night mode" in addition to the "sRGB". Each has a slightly different brightness and contrast mix. You should be able to find one that you like from the standard list, or you can fine-tune the display through individual controls.

Update - well - one flaw. The power cord is only 5 feet long, which doesn't quite reach my power bar, so now I need to buy a 6 foot cord. So close, but not quite there...

Update - from a question that was posted. While the monitor comes with two connector cables, you should only connect ONE type of cable between a computer and a monitor (any computer and any monitor - not just this one). Either use an HDMI cable (not included) OR the DVI cable OR the VGA cable. Do not connect both the DVI and VGA cables between the same computer and the monitor.
If your computer has only a VGA connector (common on older and laptop computers), then if you want to get audio you will need to separately purchase a "VGA with audio to HDMI" adapter cable. This cable will have a VGA connector and a loose "pigtail" wire with a 3.5mm audio jack on one end, and an HDMI connector on the other end. Plug the VGA connector into your computer, plug the 3.5mm audio jack into your computer's headphones output receptacle, and plug the HDMI connector into the back of the monitor and you should be able to get audio output to the monitor.

I've had the original 'Good' version since 2013 when they came out, and as you can see in the pictures, the 'Bad' model is much more yellow and less blue than the original. I've filed for a replacement with hopefully a good model and will update the review to five stars if I happen to get that one instead. Having used the original since they came out I will say though that if you do get the good version it's a fantastic monitor, it's not too overbearing on the eyes and colors are mostly true with a little change here and there on the monitor and maybe your graphics card. I love this monitor when it's the good one, and I didn't realize how poorly washed out the 'bad' version was until I got mine in the mail today. Also the height difference doesn't matter that much to me but the bad version feels much less sturdy at the base.

I'll update when I get the replacement monitor and hopefully bump this up to five stars, but for now it's a solid 4 based on the original monitor and a 3 on the 2015 model.

Again: Left is the Good version, right is the bad version. It's much more apparent in person as well.

ASUS offered rebates in the past but will find fault if they can with the paper work f they can. I have bought three of these monitors for my business just this year alone. First monitor rebate was denied because they didn't like the Amazon invoice so it was recent then again denied. The a second monitor I requested rebate on was approved however I did receive the Email approval and here it is 4 moths later no rebate. The third monitor I purchased I needed but I gave up on their rebate procedure and won't be buying from them again. Their rebate in my opinion is a scam although the monitors worked well!

I like this monitor enough to own two of them now (bought one in 2014 and another in 2015). It is inexpensive, lightweight (for a wall-mounted multi-monitor rack; I'm a developer and I like to have coding screens open along with output screens), and good looking. I haven't had any problems with backlight color, bleed, or uneven-ness, so I'm pleased overall.

However, the monitor I bought in June 2015 has updated firmware that's has an annoying problem. I use an ultra-low power system (Rasberry Pi) on a secondary input (HDMI) for times when I want to look something up or check email without running my workstation. Normally my workstation goes to sleep and all the monitors go to sleep including the Asus VS228 monitors. The newest one, however, detects that there is still something active plugged into HDMI and instead of going to sleep, it switches input to the Pi. This means not only does the monitor stay on instead of going into low power mode, I also have to manually switch it back to DVI mode every time I wake the workstation from sleep.

Auto input switching should be an optional feature instead of something we can't change. For now I'm back to using the older Asus monitor with the secondary input, and I'm trying to get reliable power saving mode working on the Pi, but it's still annoying that the monitor doesn't respect the mode it is in. I understand it's designed as a feature so that users don't have to switch modes when a new system is turned on or plugged in, but we should be able to turn that off.

This monitor seems to be manufactured by different companies even though they have the same ASUS branding and model number. I ordered two of these monitors and one had the colors spot on with those on my laptop display while the other had washed out colors and reds appeared orange. I couldn't fix the washed out colors with any of the settings provided by the monitor nor manually changing the RGB parameters on the monitor and my NVIDIA settings. I promptly decided I couldn't deal with that and I returned the monitor with the washed out colors and received another one without any hassle. Amazon was great at sending me another monitor as fast as possible without any gimmicks. The two monitors I have now are great and colors are the same. I noted differences between the two monitors with the same model number. I will describe the good monitor first and the bad monitor second. The images will also be in the same order.

2.) Good: Bottom of base is half metal and half plastic Bad: Bottom of base is all metal

4.) Good: Monitor is physically taller Bad: Monitor is physically shorter

Aside from this small setback, the monitors are perfect for my setup. They have nice colors and work great with anything I throw at them.

This was a gift for my brother who lives just over 600 miles from me. He needed a monitor for his security system as his old one was beginning to fail on him. As a early Christmas gift I decided to order him one through Amazon and chose an Asus monitor. My laptop is an Asus and it has been an excellent, trouble-free computer. My brother tells me this monitor was easy to connect as a replacement to his old one. Asus had provided two cables which came as a surprise to us both since most electronics often come without the much needed assessories. I was told the picture and sound was crystal clear and I could hear how pleased my brother was from the tone of his voice. That brought a smile to my face because when I give a gift, sight unseen, and it turns out to be the perfect gift....well that is worth everything to me.

Asus has certainly gained my trust in their products.

Update - changing to 4 stars - figured out how to make the monitor tilt..I just had to adjust the stand a bit. thank goodness for reviews on YouTube!

All of the things that make for a good monitor are here - the picture is actually very good.

However 3 stars for not having an adjustable stand. The stand causes the screen to be permanently pitched slightly forward, which is super awkward. To compensate I have the monitor stacked on 3 books, which is also awkward. I think I can fix the problem by mounting it on one of those arms. But that's going to add quite a bit to the cost of the monitor. Still deciding whether to send it back.
