I had used arctic silver 5 for years before trying MX-4. This paste is absolutely excellent! I am a computer repair technician and have begun using it on customer's laptops instead of the crap Dell and Apple. Let me tell you these customers always come back with smiles saying how much cooler their systems run with this stuff. Arctic Silver is still in my toolkit for certain situations, but this paste makes for an absolute wonder when it is used on mobile computers. I replaced my parsonal gaming machine's paste with this stuff because I saw horror stories related to IC Diamond and sure enough it had worn the top of my cpu die a bit and that is unacceptable. I replaced it with Arctic MX-4 and have had fantastic results.
One thing which is VERY important to note about this paste is that it is THIN. Arctic Silver 5 is tacky and rather thick which is well suited to heat sinks which have a lot of pressure from the screws holding it on. Arctic MX-4 can still be used in these situations, but with MX-4 LESS IS ABSOLUTELY MORE!!! practice a few times when applying it because you may need to adjust your application methods for this paste depending upon what you are used to using.
I would absolutely without a doubt recommend this paste to everyone building a high performance desktop machine or anyone trying to significantly lower the heat output of say an Alienware laptop or retina display macbook pro as is extremely adept at this task. Do be aware that Apple is picky as hell about every little thing inside of your machine so be sure if you have this applied it is done by a professional! There is always the case that Apple can deny you warranty coverage because you have "tampered' with your device. If you are out of warranty however give it a go! You will not be disappointed with the reduction in heat output from your mac!
This stuff is incredible. I've gotten significant improvements over AS-5! I used the spread method of adding a thin, even layer over the chip. I did this on both my CPU and GPU. On my GPUs, with AS-5, I would stay in the 40s at idle, low 70s at max load.. With MX-4, I'm staying in the low 30s at idle, and never going much above 60 at max. Wiith my CPU, with AS-5, idle was mid 30s, with max being around 63. Now that I'm using MX-4, I've seen my idle CPU temp drop as low as 25, and max load barely reaches mid 50s. After experiencing these results, I could recommend MX-4 to absolutely everyone, to those who just want to improve upon their stock thermal paste, or to the experienced overclocker. Also, with MX-4 not being conductive unlike AS-5, you don't have to be as careful with it. You do still need to make sure a proper amount is applied, but you don't need to worry about any bleed over.
I got this product because my laptop temperatures got drastically worse over the course of about a month or 2. The temperatures I got with it out of the box on Unigine Valley 1.0 was up to 74 C on gpu, and 86 C on cpu. It got to the point where the gpu was thermal throttling at 86 C and the cpu was thermal throttling at 90 C. I thought "Somethings wrong." I take the cooler off my laptop (MSI GE62 2QF) and take the fans off and there is dust coating the fins in a dense layer, I used a old toothbrush and brushed the dust off both fans, put 'em on, cleaned off the old thermal paste (which was hard and crusty) and put a dab of this on the GPU and CPU, put the cooler assembly back on, and put the bottom of the laptop back on. Now the GPU (overclocked) tops out at 72 C. The CPU at 3.24 GHz is at about 82 C at 100% load ON MY LAP. Its not burning my pants off! WOW!
So I thought I'd take the unit apart, clean off the original 2012 vintage thermal paste and replace it with the Arctic MX-4 so see if it would indeed solve the problem. Thankfully the PS3 is relatively easy to take apart with the right tools (courtesy of iFixit), I found the two overheating chips, used an alcohol wipe to clean the surfaces and applied the Arctic MX-4 paste. I made sure to spread the paste about 1-2mm thick with a Uspudger over the entire area (only one half, namely the chips), then put the unit back together.
It worked flawlessly! After many happy hours of playing on my PS3, the unit has NEVER made that loud fan noise again. This tells me that the thermal paste is working its magic, the heat from my Cell CPU and Reality Synthesiser GPU is efficiently diffused, and my PS3 sounds super happy. So am I!
Thank you Arctic! I highly recommend this stuff! It gave my PS3 a new lease on life.
Great thermal compound. It has a thermal conductivity rate of 8.5W / (mK), which is pretty high. For reference, the stock thermal paste that comes on most cpu coolers out of the box is roughly between 1.5 to 3.0W / (mK). The higher the number, the better the conductivity.
This paste paired with the Arctic Freezer 240 keeps my R7 1700 at 1.4V idles around 30-32C and max loads at about 65C with the highest ever high peak reaching 72C, which only happened once. There are pastes out there that transfer more heat than this like Thermal Grizzly, but this paste works fantasticly and should be more than enough for most builds and is reasonably priced.
I definitely recommend this product.

Awesome product! I got this to replace my current thermal paste installed on my CPU and GPU. The amount given is probably enough to apply to 10 computers. Way more than I needed, but hey you never know if a friend needs some. For my GPU, I have an older GTX 760 FTW. I have owned it for about 4 years and noticed the fans staying on longer and longer even under "no load". I took a look at its temps and it was at about 72 degrees Celsius during a bench test. After applying this thermal paste, it immediately dropped down to 60 degrees Celsius! Amazing in my book. Also, my normal usage temps went down and the fans spun down as well. My CPU did drop a little, but that's because just a year prior I replaced my cooler and the thermal paste then. Overall, solid product. Highly recommend!
I got this to fix my buddy's overheating computer. Even after cleaning out the dog hair and other...um, material, he was still experiencing random BSOD's and freeze-ups. Re-greasing the CPU was the last resort, and I'm happy to report that it's been problem free since.
I intend to do my machine as well, if and when I get a quiet weekend. I initially used the generic paste that came with the CPU (yes, yes, I know, shut up). I typically see about 38-44°C idle, and 65-70°C playing Fallout 4. I'll append my review to report the difference once I've done it.
UPDATE: Finally got around to cleaning and re-greasing my own CPU. The idle temp is a little lower, typically in the 35-38°C range. However, when playing Fallout, it's down to 58-65°C. Pretty good.
I'm not sure how much room temperature affects cpu temp, but it was winter when I wrote the first review and we keep the house rather chilly - about 62°F. It's now the end of spring and the temp in here is 75, so my final results may (or may not) be even better. Perhaps I'll update my review when December rolls around again.
I have used Arctic Silver 5 for years but after reading a lot of reviews on this product I decided to give it a try. My project was to remove my GPU heatsink to apply some thermal pads on the RAM and mosfits (EVGA GTX 1060 SC). Once I applied the thermal pads I cleaned off the old thermal compound on the heatsink and GPU and then liberally applied MX-4 to the GPU. I have read it is not conducting so it shouldn't matter if it gets a tiny bit messy (unlike Arctic Silver 5). Once I reattached the heatsink with the thermal pads and the MX-5 I now have temperatures consistently 10 degree less than before. This stuff along with properly placed thermal pads on mosfits and RAM are nothing short of miraculous.
My Dell computer has been noisy for years -- sounds like a jet engine most of the time. A couple of times it did quiet down for long stretches, but mostly it heats up an runs the fans full blast almost all of the time. The computer processor cooling fan is loud and I had to turn up videos to full volume just to hear it clearly. Then, my computer started blanking out and turning off at random. I lost some info, and was about to buy a new computer. But, I took my computer case off and cleaned out all of the dust and saw there was dust in the processor's heat sink. As I was clearing it out, I saw some kind of gray stuff on the chip, and then reassembled everything ... and it got quite, for a few days, then went back to where it was loud and the fan running high again. So, I downloaded the Core Temp free program, and have been running it in the background. It was showing close to 100 degrees most of the time, whenever multiple programs or windows were loaded. Rarely would it go below 75 degrees at any time and quiet down. So, I looked up the gray stuff on the chip and lo and behold -- thermal compound paste. I saw that this one got good ratings. So, I ordered it and it arrived pretty quickly. I disassembled the computer and heat sink again -- cleaned off the chip, and squirted a litte bit of this ARTIC MX-4 Thermal Compund Paste on it. And then I put it all back together. WOW. Wow, wow, wow. It is so quite now -- you'd never even know my computer was on anymore. Core Temp indicates that it rarely goes above 60 degrees most of the time, and the heat sink fan barely ever runs loudly at all. I would say never, really. Such a huge improvement -- it was so obnoxious for years, and I did not know what to do about it. Learn something new every day. Great product.
Noticed my computer failing to speed through things like it use to. I installed a Solid State months ago and it was fantastic then the speeds fell...and fell. I notoced when I installed Speccy, rightaway I say a 72c Idle. I was like holy smokes! That's not doing anything but booting it up! I decided to purchase this as it got the best review, and boy...i'm rocking a 32c idle now and 40c Load on battery saving. It's fantastic! Ans to the people who say there isn't enough, you're using too much...a micro dollop for me did more than great. I can probably do 20 pc's with this stuff! Highly recommend!
