I've never had Spam or any other canned meat (aside from tuna, chicken, or turkey, lol) so I was pretty interested to see what a can of ground beef would look and taste like. The reviews here give some pretty good descriptions so I'm just going to post some photos, (strange as it was taking them!) so you can see for yourself. It's pretty solid-ish, if that makes sense. The fat was mostly at the top and separated enough that it's easy to use just the meat. I used a fork to pull apart the cold meat like ground meat would be after cooked, and make nachos...
Nasty as it looks, it's super delicious with a bit of True Lime Shaker, Lime, Garlic and Cilantro, 2.29 Ounce, shredded cheese, veggies of choice, spread over tortilla chips. We baked them in the toaster oven along with some Old El Paso Stand N' Stuff Soft Tortilla, 6.7 Ounce (Pack of 8). Then we put nachos in the (separately toasted) taco boats and dip in sour cream. Tastes like double decker tacos.
Yum! Yum!! Smile. Enjoy!!!
I bought this by accident, thinking it was the Keystone Beef. It sat in the pantry for several months because I was afraid it would be dogfood-like. A few nights ago, we were *starving*. I had not planned, thawed, or prepared anything; there were no eggs and no leftovers in the fridge, and we didn't want a bowl of cereal or can of soup (again). I opened this can of ground beef, expecting the worst.
I was wrong! Because the pantry is cool, all the white fat had solidified and stuck to the top and side of the can. I drained the juice into a pet bowl. I dumped the blob of meat into a people bowl and broke it apart with a wooden spoon. It really was finely ground beef. No visible fat. It tasted like ground beef, just more finely ground than from the grocer. I made a quick stir fry for a warm, satisfying meal. I scraped the solid fat from the can into the garbage before recycling the can.
So, chill the can so the fat solidifies, and go about making whatever you'd normally make with cooked ground beef. It really was ok for people food and my dogs did not get ground beef that night (the cats liked the juice, but that too may also be okay for people).
I think it'll make a good chili. I bought 2 more cans on purpose yesterday :)
I used about two thirds of the 28oz. can in a big pot of spaghetti sauce. I was a bit surprised at the single huge Godzilla sized meatball of beef, but it is easy enough to cut and chop into chunks. I discarded most of the fat, but the liquid went into the sauce for flavor.
When it was all done, it came out very good. This tastes far better than the Hormel canned beef from the grocery.
I like it. So much that I ordered two more 28oz. cans and four 14oz. cans for my disaster preps.
The old adage on LTS food storeage is, "Store what you eat, eat what you store!"
After eating this, though it may be a bit spendy, it is well worth eating and storing.
I'm currently 1200 miles out in the Aleutians and always looking for good store able foods. This is that. My wife and I bought one can to try, and I just finished it. It's mostly meat, very little water and fat. Taste is very good. It comes out in a can-shaped lump of burger, and I could see someone slicing patties out of it. Very Happy.
Another good product from Keystone Meats. Works out great for making bolognese sauce, tacos, enchiladas, Hunt's Manwich Sloppy Joe's, burritos, S.O.S, meat pies, hamburger soup...
I do miss the caramelization taste of fried ground beef but this works beautifully for what I need. Using this product is so much less fuss then frying it up myself, plus there is no mess of splattered grease everywhere to clean up.
The fat released from this actually seems less than I would normally get frying it myself.
Released broth is not salty; it can be used to make gravy, for the water requirement in Idahoan Original Mashed Potatoes, part of the liquid needed for a soup stock, or as a treat for the dogs to have on their kibble.
I have found no gristle or bone fragments in these. Comes out basically as the shape of the can (so you can drain off the broth and fat fairly easily, if you wish). Breaks apart easily, and quickly with just a fork.
I also enjoy Keystone Meats All Natural Canned Turkey, Beef, Chicken, Pork, and their Chicken Soup Base which also makes a great broth to sip.

I almost forgot I had this and was concerned whether or not it would have been alright to eat after sitting in the pantry for the past half decade. However I was pleasantly surprised to find the meat in good condition, meat separated from the fat, but otherwise still smelling good and tasting great. There was quite a bit of water inside and I did not dump it off at first so I had to boil it off. I recommend pouring out that liquid bit if you don't mind losing it.
Tasted some before putting it on the stove, perfectly edible. Cooked it up and I must say it's texture is less like ground beef if cooked fresh and more like corned beef. I suppose that makes sense considering it has essentially been curing in salt this whole time. So if you don't mind the texture and taste of corned beef I would highly recommend this product.
One 28oz can appears to be enough for a family dinner for 4.
As mentioned by some other reviewers, draining the beef and removing any bits of fat before heating gives the best results for foods like tacos, sloppy-joes, and casseroles. If you're going to use this in a chili or a stew, then leave the water and, if it's your thing, the fat.
If you drain the beef and sear it quickly in a pan on high heat (especially with a zest of lime juice, black pepper, and garlic) you get a great product just as good as freshly cooked ground beef.
One can of this will make two meals for my family of four, so instead of cooking one-pound of raw ground beef and adding four to six cans of beans to make chili (plus a can of corn and Rotel, depending on if we use baked beans or black beans), I will use one can of the Keystone ground beef and double the amount of beans and freeze the left-overs for another dinner down the road. This can equals up almost exactly to two pounds of cooked and drained 85/15 meat.
Having a good selection of these resting on the shelf is peace of mind worth so much more than the $10 asking price.
I purchased this for emergency supplies. I decided to try it and was delightfully surprised. When I opened it I thought mmmmm not sure about this but, tried some in a burrito and guess what? It was quite tasty and convenient for another plus. I work long hours as a nurse and sometimes just barely have enough energy to pop left overs in the micro. This will be a go to when I am tired and just do not have the energy or time to cook. It is good in spaghetti, tacos and whatever else you might used cooked ground beef for. Will not be just for emergencies in the future. Remember this is 28 ounces fully cooked. It does have some fat and juice but so does fresh when cooked. Give it a try.
Mostly meat with a little water and congealed fat. Fat was mainly at the top and easy to scrape off while still in can. Was not cooked all the way through, so needs heating up before using. Was not mushy as some reviews said (at least the can I received wasn't) and did not have a bad smell. At least no worse than meat smells anyway. Meat is finely chopped for sloppy joes or nachos (can't form it into burgers or meatloaf). I prefer fresh ground beef, of course, but this will do in a pinch.
Keystone Meats always have a consistent quality product. If you need a canned meat product, this is the company to buy from.
5 stars reflect a comparison to other canned meat products.
Actually is fairly tasty compared to fresh cooked meat-- obviously not gourmet, but it's a good product.
I have tried the cubed beef, ground beef, pork, turkey, & chicken-- all of them are quite good.
Keystone doesn't add a lot of preservatives or any of the other unwholesome additives most canned meat (actually canned anything) contains-- they keep it simple and it makes for a tasty product.
I will say that the meat does have a noted salt flavor-- not overt, but it's there. If you require a salt-free product, this is not for you-- but then again, neither are 98% of any canned/prepared food items...
I will also note that the beef & pork Keystone items do have the ubiquitous glob of fat in them-- this is easily scooped out/away with a spoon (put can in the refrigerator for a few minutes before opening for even easier separation). Or if you have a cast-iron heart, then leave it in for flavor or fry some potatoes in it :-)
These products are great for camping, emergency rations/storm supplies, quick meals, and the "cooking impaired"---- you can't get much quicker & easier than this.
Mixes well Mrs Dash salt-free seasonings (especially Taco), Rotel tomatoes, Mac & Cheeses, stroganoff noodles, etc.
Don't tell the other Texans, but I actually made chili with it once [Hey, it was an emergency... and we needed some chili STAT :-) ] It worked, I had no complaints -- the family was understanding that we were in a situation where real slow cooked home-style Angus/Venison chili was not an option... Used Carol Shelby's chili mix, Guinness Stout, canned tomatoes-Rotel , & a can of three-bean mix (pinto, black, kidney) [yeah, I know... 'real' chili doesn't have beans-- Like I said, it was an emergency.
Overall, I recommend this and other Keystone meat products.
