AmazonBasics 24-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper, CD and Credit Card Home Office Shredder with Pullout Basket

AmazonBasics 24-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper, CD and Credit Card Home Office Shredder with Pullout Basket

***UPDATE: 5 months after purchase, this has never jammed once. The $2,000 shredder at the office jams every day. I shred about 100-200 pages a day, 5 days a week. I remain amazed that this has not jammed even once. I shred about 20 pages at a time, continually. I use the sharpening sheets about once or twice a month. If you are on the fence about which shredder to buy, this shredder should be your first choice.***
My shredding backed up quite a bit because I work from home and trips to my office downtown just to drop off shredding were inconvenient. So, by the time this shredder was delivered I had about 10,000 pages to shred. It took me a few hours every day to shred the backlog, about 20 pages at a time, for 9 days. This machine worked like a champ. No jams, no shutting down, everything shredded. I had no trouble at all placing the paper in the slot because the built up edges around the slot guide the paper effortlessly to where it needs to go. I bought the Staples 15.8 -gallon shredder bags: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MV08T1Y?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf. and they are big enough to drape over the sides and front of the shredder 7- gallon bin. I have not lost one single shred changing out the bin. There is a window on the front of the shredder bin near the top so you can see when the bag is full without opening the bin. You can see the window in my photo. I just pull the bin out, lift up the draped edges of the plastic bag and tie it up. I have only had this shredder for a little while but any manufacturer defects would surely have shown themselves with the large amount of shredding this machine did. There is no assembly required at all. Just pull it out of the box, line the bin with a plastic bag and turn the machine on.

Here are the "good" and "bad" on this product.
.
.
ADVANTAGES
.
1. The device chews up paper without any problems. It never choked. More important, I never used the reverse button to clear up stoppage - this common shredding problem never occurred.
.
2. Unlike my previous Fellowes unit, the shredder did not overheat after 45 minutes of operation.
.
3. I priced all the shredders on Amazon and read their reviews. In the end, only two commercial models were the best of the lot. This product and the Royal 1849MX were almost statistically identical on reviews. The Royal had more enthusiastic comments such as "the best shredder that I have experienced" and "office favorite." The AmazonBasics was $35 cheaper and had a 24-sheet rating versus 18. So, I purchased the latter for its better value and heavier duty performance.
.
4. It is very compact in size.
.
5. The noise during shredding was lower than previous models that I have owned.
.
.
DISADVANTAGES
.
1. AmazonBasics is a no-named brand. In comparison, Royal has a long history in manufacturing electrical typewriters and office machines.
.
2. The feed slot can only fit 8.5" paper.
.
3. The plastic bin is small and the construction is very thin. It actually flexes.
.
4. The unit is very heavy.

As with all paper shredders, the sheet count refers to 24 tissue papers. Nevertheless, this is a stronger than normal shredder and if it wasn't for the horrible noise, I'd give it 5 stars. It's most compelling feature is that I no longer need to open those credit card offer envelopes with the fake cards inside; I can just shred the entire envelope without ever having to open it. Good purchase.

I'm shredding 40 long banker-boxes from my old business (no, I'm not at a nursing home bilking its clients). My Fellows DM12Ct lost a plastic tooth spreader, so constantly jammed -- this is the replacement. I'll try to remember to update when the grinding is done.

Pro: Quiet, plus it sounds like it's actually eating the paper -- a very satisfying sound. With a 24 sheet limit, it's difficult to over-feed. Took care of a 9" stack in no time.

Cons: The bin has a tall front wall, but is short on the other three walls. Unless you're careful to remove the bin before it's over-full, shreds will fall out the back and into body of the shredder that holds the bin.

If there are ANY shreds in the body that holds the bin, then the bin will not shut and the shredder will not run. Keep a vacuum cleaner handy. (The Fellows had structural compartments instead of a flat bottom, so for that machine, it was not a problem.)

The mouth of the shredder is only a smidgen larger than 8 1/2", so unless the papers are stacked neatly, they will not feed.

Overall a good product, but could use some tweaking -- Amazon engineers, are you listening?

UPDATE: 5/26/15

Finished the forty long bankers-boxes, and the shredder is still smiling. It's eaten an additional ten long bankers-boxes of financial records with no problem. The only additional substantive comment is that this shredder has yet to over-heat. My earlier Fellows would over-heat after about fifteen minutes, then take 30 minutes to cool down. This shredder went through an 18" stack in about 45 minutes with no problem. Also, I can't praise the 24 sheet limit too highly. If you have any folded statements -- bank, phone, cable -- you won't have to unfold them to shred them.

I bought this shredder more than two years ago after my mother died. There were decades worth of paper files and records, about 4 file cabinet drawers plus a dozen cardboard file boxes. With my little personal shredder I would still be shredding documents today! I bought this based on positive reviews and Amazon Basics reputation and couldn't be happier. It chews up stacks of paper up to about 20 sheets at a time into confetti size bits. It grabs the papers right out of your hand and pulls them in like one of those tree chopping machines! CDs, credit cards, staples and even paper clips are no problem. After all that shredding, I brought it to my house and chopped up all my old documents. It's been about 2-1/2 years and this monster is still going strong. I do recommend using shredder oil on the blades to keep it running smoothly. I use the Fellowes Performance Oil - just a squirt back and forth into the throat of the paper slot every time I empty the bin. Just a couple things to keep in mind - not really negative, but just for your information. This is about the size of a tall kitchen garbage can, so it's larger than your typical home shredder. Also, there is no way to put a plastic liner inside the bin. You have to pull out the bin and dump it into a garbage can or dumpster. I don't mind because I'm so paranoid about shredding - I like to make sure the million little bits of paper get spread out and mixed up with all the other garbage, rather than be preserved inside a plastic bag. This is an awesome shredder if you have a lot of bulk paper to destroy. It might be overkill for your average household shredding.

They describe some potential root causes based on the information provided An Amazon Brand.

Bought for my Father in Law that shreds everything, every piece of mail etc. He had a smaller device. He is the type that likes to put his whole mailbox into the shredder at once. his previous device stopped working. Saw this and have had much success with the Amazon Basics brand in past. He loves it. He can put 25 sheets in and this device doesn't miss a beat.

This is probably the most useful purchase work-wise that I've made in a while. Due to the nature of my work, I use this almost every day.

Shredder arrived in great condition and as described. The quality of the micro-cut is pretty great. I've been able to stress this baby out and I've successfully shredded up to 30 sheets of standard printing paper, although this number goes down with higher weight paper. CDs and cards are no problem for this either.

The collection bin pulls out effortlessly for dumping. The castor wheels are small but are certainly enough for moving this around a few feet here and there.

Would highly recommend and definitely worth the extra cost if you shred in high volumes. Make sure to also buy the AmazonBasics lubricant sheets or else this won't last you more than 12 months.

I absolutely love this shredder! After several that just didn’t have the capacity or strength required to handle our massive supply of mail, this one is affordable and does the job! The video amplified the sound. This machine isn’t loud at all. I love the bin size, the speed, it’s ability to shred plastic and that I don’t have to remove staples. While others required that I open the million credit card applicants that we receive on a daily basis in order to fed them through a page at a time, this allows me to shred envelop and it’s contents, unopened as soon as I get it out of the mailbox! I am going to use the shredding for different applications too. It can be used in litter pans at the local vet clinic, in compost for my outdoor flower pots, etc.

This is a monster of a home office shredder. Rated for 24 pages at a time and will actually do that for ordinary typing paper or similar material, although it strains a bit. I wouldn't feed it a steady diet of 24 pages, but for the usual handful of 10-12 pages or so at a time including credit cards, etc., this guy chews them up fast, and hasn't jammed yet. I have sat for up to an hour feeding material into it with no stopping or overheating. It will take something like a solicitation for a credit card, about 6 pages folded double in a big envelope, and eat it up without even opening it. A full bin represents about half a kitchen garbage bag of shredded paper. I pull out the bin, slip a bag over the top, then turn the bin upside down and empty it into the bag, only a few stray bits of paper escape. Haven't figured out how to fill the other half of the bag but I could do it by hand which would probably mean some vacuuming of the floor afterward. I just toss the half bag into the garbage. I almost dropped my rating by one star because the interior edges of the plastic bin are sharp in places and you need to be a little careful. Also, replacing the bin takes a bit of finagling until you get the hang of it because it needs to fit just right or the safety interlock won't let you turn it on, a good thing. This is worlds better than the Fellowes that I paid about $80 for, well worth the price for its heavy duty action and lack of problems.

This is the third shredder I have owned, and it is far and away the most solidly built of the three. It was not my first choice, but the other was estimated to ship in 30-60 days, and I was unprepared to wait that long.
My only complaint so far is that when shredding smaller items, it takes some practice to feed them in the right location to trip the sensor which starts the shredder.
The positive things, however, include: Large waste bin, with provision for bag; heavy duty shredder mechanism, and powerful motor; nearly desktop height, which is more convenient than smaller units; very solid feel to the entire unit.
It ships double-boxed, and though the outer box had clearly suffered, it served its sacrificial purpose, and the inner box and the shredder were perfectly fine.
