TomTom VIA 1625TM 6-Inch GPS Navigation Device with Free Lifetime Traffic & Maps of North America, Advanced Lane Guidance and Spoken Turn-by-Turn Directions

TomTom VIA 1625TM 6-Inch GPS Navigation Device with Free Lifetime Traffic & Maps of North America, Advanced Lane Guidance and Spoken Turn-by-Turn Directions

My unit came with maps from mid year 2017 when I ordered in fall 2018. I tried to update the maps (there had been 5 updates since this unit was manufactured). I could not update with my 9 yr. old computer running an old operating system. While I can download the update program to my computer, it is impossible to update the via unit. That said, I love the traffic updates. Traffic only updates every 5 minutes or so, so information is not up to the minute. Traffic tells you how much time the delay may take and how far ahead the problem is. It also will suggest an alternate route when possible. Great when you don't want or have a smart phone. This was a feature that was important to me along with directions. Older maps are not that big a deal. I will have another family member with a newer computer help me get map updates if I really feel the need for that.

Touch screen has a delay when first started up, perhaps it is just taking a long time to boot up. The cord to connect the unit to my car is at a bit of an awkward angle so, the clam shell that I use to hold the unit doesn't allow me to center the unit in the clam shell. The holder that comes with the unit should eliminate that problem. I just don't want to suction clamp the original holder on my dash or window.

The unit also shows a split screen when exits or turns are coming up to show which lane(s) you should stay in to remain on course.

Overall, a very good unit with traffic for the price.

I like the features as it has more features than the Garmin, does all that the Garmin does and more. I had a cheaper model Garmin. I purchased a better model of the Tom Tom but not the most expensive so I cannot really compare models. My garmin kept quitting on me after a year or so so I switched to a Tom Tom. It has a learning curve but once you figure it out it is the same as a Garmin. I do not like the mount but am purchasing a dashboard mount. The mounting system is difficult to place on your window. I liked the Garmin mount better but it fell off too. I am very dependent upon a GPS so I am hoping this one keeps working for me and I do like the Settings features of this Garmin. I also obtained with traffic and road closings so I am hoping that works.

I had a Tom Tom for many years and I loved it. It came up missing recently and I needed a new one and I chose this one. When it arrived I immediately didn't like the size of it. It was twice the size of my old one. I'll admit, it took a few tries to get it programmed and then tested for accuracy. I recently had to make a trip to Boise Idaho which has really turned into a large city the past few years, and I was so impressed with the ease the instructions were delivered. Plenty of time to make needed maneuvers, etc. And I ended up loving the large screen. I was able to see it so very clearly as it sat on my dash board. We are definitely friends now. I went onto the TomTom site to choose a voice and was disappointed that Homer Simpson is no longer offered. Homer and I traveled for years! But I picked out an English Dude and he is clear speaking and yet has a sense of humor as well. So it's all good, and I would definitely recommend the TomTom VIA....

It still uses the same vacuum holder as past models, which do not hold well. The only way it works for me is to stick the vacuum base to the window, while being sure the unit is also firmly set on the dash - two points of contact. Otherwise the motion of the car quickly causes it to fall off the dash. Surely after a decade or two, the need for a better approach has been suggested to TomTom.

The "eco-route' planner is broken. On a common route I take of 30 miles, it sends me through a small town for the last 8 miles with a bunch of stop lights, where there is a slightly longer route that is 50mph all the way to the last mile, with on stop lights, and takes 6 minutes less. An older TomTom did it right.

The only thing that keeps me from being totally positive about this GPS is the fact it took an hour and a half to update the map right out of the box. The last TOMTOM I had was the same as it would always take over an hour to update. TOMTOM if you want me to pay extra for the safety camera updates, make the update process take a reasonable amount of time. In this day of highspeed communication it should not take more than 10 min, max.

The TomTom VIA 1625TM offers essential navigation, free lifetime traffic, and free lifetime map updates*. Finding destinations is simple from the Search menu or by touching a point on the map. Advanced Lane Guidance helps you prepare for exits and intersections by clearly highlighting the correct driving lane for your planned route. 6 inch touchscreen.

5" screen just a little small for me. TomTom doesn't give you all features described for free. I miss the name of my destination on the screen. They had this feature on the old 4" model. Touch screen and icons easy to use. Easier and faster to enter travel points than earlier models. Side bar for construction, gas stations, ... So they don't fill up your driving screen.

The TomTom VIA 1625 TM is just what I wanted to replace my old (5 year old TomTom) that went dead on me. This unit is faster and possesses more features that I use. I also got it for the larger screen which is a plus for me. Only a few adjustments were made to use my old mounting in my car. Good unit good value. Software expensive though.

I love this as my old one stopped working and I like having an independent GPS system in my car not attached to my phone. I ordered it and it arrived promptly, price was good for the upgrade as it was needed anyway. I plugged it into my car and so far it's been accurate as well as useful.

We purchased this GPS before a vacation in 2018. We found the database to be accurate and up-to-date and it will be available for the lifetime of the GPS, so there is no worry about having to subscribe and pay for updates. TomTom is an excellent product.

Though I was a little hesitant about the 6” screen to being too large,I will say it’s GREAT! Having the larger screen makes it easy to quickly look at the gps directions. The TomTom software is very easy to use but also robust! I really like the side panel on the screen that shows upcoming traffic delays and gas station/rest areas. Very helpful!
