Imagine my surprise when I found out that my old TI-83 didn't have enough power to do everything I needed it to do for my next three math classes, College Algebra (math 114), Calculus for Business and Stats! After a lengthy conversation with my Math Professor, she recommended I pick up a TI-84 and if i was willing to pay a bit more get the color version. Man am I glad I did. This Calculator is so much fun. It's like walking around with a mini computer in my pocket. I can put in my functions Ysub1 and Ysub2, Hit graph and whamo out comes this pretty graph, like the TI-83 it does handle a lot of numbers, you can set equations to zero and off you go running, however unlike the older version, you are not constrained with having to remember when to use or close parenthesis. I've run the same things through both calculators and was amazed when the older version basically had a heart attack when the TI-84 chugged through the answer.
This one is rechargeable, which means you need to plug it into the wall and top off the battery, it comes partially charged. Color changes are super easy with just a touch of a few buttons. Outside of that it does have a larger memory so upgrades are a breeze. I an unable to speak at this time as to the battery life as I just bought it this week and haven't had to charge it but the one time.
Whats in the package:
1. TI-84 Plus CE
1 - Micro USB/ USB Mini-B port
1 - USB/USB Mini-B port for charging
1 - Cover
1 - TI-84 Plus CE for Dummies pamphlet
2 additional pamphlets for the TI-84 Plus CE
1 -Warranty pamphlet
This is really a good upgraded calculator that meets the needs of those who are going to school for general math and moving on to stats. I'm a business major so my math will end at Stats and Calculus for business. I really do like this new unit!
An excellent step forward for Texas Instruments, and a powerfully intuitive tool for any business or STEM, student or professional.
Dear reader,
I recently started business school and a TI or Casio business level or higher calculator is mandatory for lectures and homework. However the TI family of graphing calculators are much easier to use, and offer much more functionality for real world business applications than the TI-BA II Plus or Professional models. This model, the TI-84 Plus CE offers the same extensive programability that the the TI graphic family off calculators has offered for the past 20 years, however it is much more flexible and performs tasks faster with a more clean and simple to operate, user experience. I am also an owner of a TI-83 Plus Silver Edition (the see through model with silver tone and a B/W screen) and the TI-BA II Plus. Yes, the color screen may be seen as a novelty for someone who doesn't really need or understand the usefulness of such a device; but for someone who is processing real business, geometric or scientific calculations this calculator makes the user more comfortable and competitive because of these evolutionary new features; at last, thats what it did for me. As long as the user clearly understands and practices the process of how to enter data and operate the many tools within the calculator, the user will see an immediate value in using this newer model verses older models. As a business student I quickly and easily programmed this calculator in advance before using this new model in my math class. I programed it to perform, Lower Case Letters, Distance Formulas, Factoring Polynomials, Quadratic Functions and Systems of Liner Equations; easy math for some, but not for me. On the first day of using this new model in my class, I came up with several correct answers faster than any student in the class and because if the functionality of the calculator I was able to quickly understand, repeat, and explain each step of how I got the correct answer.
- Yes, in one word: "Competitive !"
PS: In regard to the color you choose for the body, I would avoid the mid gray toned models. This is because the gray plastic body provides little contrast to the light blue and light green ink printed text on the body of the calculator, thus making the text harder to read. When accurate data entry is a big part of the value of this product, I took this in to serious consideration and decided to purchase the black model. If I could buy the yellow educators model I would, yellow or blue really are my colors. Once I started using the black model, I was more than pleased with the glossy black face and the off white color of the body. This model looks and feels like a smart, sexy, bespoke limousine for a calculator. Thats cool!
UPDATE 11/9/2015
Hi everyone, I had to knock off a star for small reasons. After using this for a couple months, I still haven't changed my opinions, but I need to get my point across. While this is by far the best calculator for the price, especially with the updated memory, here are the issues I have. While I must admit I have an early production unit, I am sure these issue must be fixed. Anyhow, I noticed a lot of dust and crumbs get behind the screen for some reason. Tapping the screen makes it move around which is kinda annoying. Also, the front piece of the calculator is a fingerprint magnet. While it looks nice when its clean, it gets dirty quick. Another issue is over time the battery gets weaker. It is still great, but not as great as it used to be, but this is expected. Granted I use my calculator a lot (Games and Math), and its been through some cycles. Battery is still great and can last a month for basic use. I also noticed the logo TI-84 plus CE logo on the top is a bit curved, as in its kinda bent upwards, OCD TRIGGER. Its hard to tell in the pics provided, its like a 5° incline
Still recommend this calculator, and look no further for a different one.
CONTINUED REVIEW
This is by far the best Texas Instrument Calculator i have personally used. The vivid bright crisp display is much better than any calculator out there. The TI - 84 Plus CE runs much smoother than any TI calculator out there, and it is filled with options. It's Ideal for anyone in college or high school. I boast about this calculator when I'm at school. All my teachers are envious that I have the latest and greatest. It is much thinner than any TI-84 on the market, and it reminds me of the Nspire line up. The rechargeable feature is a really nice addition too. The calculator itself is beautiful, with its matte white finish on the case and back, and on the front the glossy black texture, its absolutely stunningly gorgeous.
Earlier on I was ranting on how none of the programs worked, and here is why. When you are downloading the TI - Connect program, You cannot download the one one that is outdated (Version 4.0) . You must go on the TI - 84 CE manufacturer website and download TI Connect™ CE Software from under the Accessories tab (For ease of access: http://education.ti.com/en/us/software/details/en/13312F7CEC074A2DAFD7EE5646129839/swticonnectcesoftwareforwindows).
The newer TI - Connect software has the version number 5.0. This one works perfectly with my calculator, and now I'm able to play PAC - man in class.
Conclusion:
I love this calculator and would recommend it to everyone I know. Its is gorgeous, sleek, fast, and has multiple nice add-ons Such as the charger and cable, Mini USB (Type A Male) to Mini USB (Type B male) cable. There are many programs out there that will help you on exams and assignments, so use this to your advantage!
Recently purchased my third TI-84 got my kids entering high school. After 7 years of use I can report durability, ease of use, and applicability from algebra 1 through calculous. This most recent purchase was for the plus with color and my algebra 2 student reports he likes the color graphing quite a bit. The first TI-84 is in its second year of college and going strong. It's probably a good idea to purchase one of the protective cases available on Amazon to protect this investment from the trials of the back pack.
Works very well and does math well. As soon as you pick up this product you will be at the head of your class so matter the subject. Math=Calculator, Science=Calculator, English=Calculator for heavens sakes even in gym if you whip this thing out and start mathing it up your peers and teachers will be so impressed that you will never get that super wedgie again along with a perfect A+ keeping your GPA at the best it can be.

Description
The TI-84 Plus CE has six times the memory of the TI-84 Plus so students can store vivid, full-color graphs, images and data. The lightweight yet durable design also makes the graphing calculator easier to carry to and from school and activities for today's on-the-go students. Also has a rechargeable wireless battery and is 30% lighter than the previous TI-84 Plus models.
AP/SAT/ACT approved graphing calculator. Both my daughters used this model throughout high school and into college. We bought a new one for my youngest to get the latest features but her five year old calculator is still going strong. Color graphing is worth the extra cost. The battery is replaceable and lasts 4-5 years and is not super expensive. Figure the cost per year and then invest in your child's education!
I bought this calculator for class. It works as described. I love the LCD lighted screen compared to the screen on the previous version without a backlight. The only thing I would change on a future version would be to backlight the buttons as well. I must say that we were required to download some programs onto the calculator for my class, but when I went to load them to this calculator they were already on it. I did have to load them onto a previous version of this calculator though. I feel like these calculators are worth the money if you need it for class and are required to have a TI 83 or 84. If you are just looking for a simple scientific calculator then you can easily find a cheaper one. This calculator is very durable and I believe it will last a long time as long as it is taken care of. I totally recommend this to anyone. The only thing I can think of that could be a con is the fact that the battery is rechargeable vs batteries you stick in the back. I believe this the case due to the slimmer build than the previous version that you pop batteries in. In any case, the battery does not run down quickly at all, just remember to charge up before class and you will be good.
I love this product so much that I named her Tiffany. Trust me when I tell you that I didn't name any of the calculators I bought before Tiffany- and that's just about every cheaper calculator you can imagine. If it were not for Tiffany, I would not have made an A in my pre-stats AND stats classes. Obviously I had to put the work in and do my homework, but with the color screen and her pretty, sleek design- I suspect I enjoyed doing my homework more than my classmates did. Although Tiffany came with a fairly comprehensive instruction manual I found the best instructions via a lot of YouTube googling, and I would suggest other buyers to do the same. Also, don't forget the charger at home! This calculator does everything and the battery lasts a long time... but when it's donezo it's donezo, so bring your charger with you.
So much better than the ti-83 I used before this. It's much more user friendly, has a much nicer screen with better resolution and it can actually do way more than I initially realized. I used to always use desmos and I thought such expensive calculators were stupid considering the availability if free apps, but this can do WAY more than any app I've ever tried. It will display answers in any format you want (decimal, fraction, or mixed number) and convert between them, graph polar and parametric equations very easily, do matrix calculations, do complex number calculations, and a host of other things I haven't tried. I took off 1 star because equations must be in the form "y=" so you can't easily graph something like "x²+y²=1" for example. You also can't display 2 equations in different coordinates simultaneously, which you can do with the FREE Desmos app. It will also take a little while to graph complicated equations, compared to free graphing apps and websites. There's also a bit of a learning curve to it. Its not at all obvious how to do anything more than arithmetic and maybe basic graphing with it. It's not that hard to learn though. Definitely better than the 83. It comes with a straightforward manual that explains the most common uses and a quick Google search should tell you how to get it to do whatever you need. Play around with it for a while, using Google as needed and you'll figure it out relatively quickly.
I LOVE this calculator. It is the complete opposite of the calculators that I used in middle school. This calculator is SO thin and lightweight. Not to mention, I love the fact that it could use different colors now, adds a lil bit more organization. It is obviously a lil bit pricey, but these things last for YEARS (provided you took well care of it). I remember a story where this person bought this for middle school, and even in college, she still uses the same thing! I like the fact that you could just charge this via a USB cable, unlike the old ones where you have to swap the batteries, its SOO convenient. I bought a protective case for it for protection and organization, I suggest people should also do that, if theyre gonna invest on an expensive calculator such as this.
