Sony BDPS3700 Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (Black)

Sony BDPS3700 Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (Black)

Apparently I didn't read all of the description, and I didn't realize that I had to purchase the high speed hdmi cord separately. I didn't compare prices anywhere because I was in a hurry to get it set up. I ended up going to a local Dollar General store and bought one for $14. I later found out that they are sold on here for about $6. The instructions made me think that I needed the hdmi cord and a coaxial cable, but I didn't. The hdmi cord worked without the other one.

With that being said, I am still very pleased with my purchase. There are plenty of apps to choose from. You can pick which ones you want listed under "My Apps" on the "Home" or main screen. It's very easy to setup and use.

The remote is small. It fits in my hand. It does come with batteries. It's simple to use.

It connected to my wifi with ease.

There is a feature called "Screen Mirroring," which sounds awesome, but I was unable to get it to work. It could possibly be because I tried it with an iPhone but I'm not completely sure. Basically, you're able to look at pictures from your phone on your tv, and it doesn't require any cords.

Read all of the features and go ahead and order the hdmi cord (if you don't have one). Scroll down under the product. It should show up under the section where it says 'suggested purchase' or 'other people also bought.'

This is my first day with it, so if anything changes, I'll update my review.

Sony BDPS3700 Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi (2016 Model)

I bought this player in December of 2016. It is now July 2017. I still love this Blu-Ray Player and use it often. I'm still glad I bought 2 of them.

I've been using this DVD player for a couple of weeks most every day. This weekend I watched the Sopranos on Blu-Ray disc after disc and the player performed without a hitch. Also, the Child Lock problem seems to be fixed on my unit. I've done 3 updates to the player since I hooked it up. Being a Blu-Ray player means it is very important for it to be connected to the internet and to always keep it updated. It needs up to date Blu-Ray information to play the latest discs.

The reason I took one star off the rating is because of the size of the remote. I have a hard time with the very small buttons. I have only had it for a couple of weeks but I don't think I will get any better at pushing the right buttons. I watch it in a dimly lit room and either need to turn a light on or use a flashlight to see the buttons. Also some of the buttons I use a lot are down toward the bottom of the remote which causes me to need to hold the remote with one hand and push the button with the other. I like some things being small but a remote isn't one of them.

The player itself is very small. I don't mind that. It is the most minimalist unit I've ever owned. There is an on/off button, eject and the DVD drawer and a USB connection. It has a small light on the front when it is on. Not distracting at all. The unit slides right under my Vizio TV which was very nice.

The player reacts very fast to the commands from the remote. It also starts up very quickly if you turn on that option which I did. My other Toshiba DVD player is very slow at doing everything, although it has lasted for a long time and never has any problems. It is not Blu-Ray though.

I bought two of these Sony players. One is in the same room as my wi-fi and the other is about 100 feet away in another room. Both of them connected to wi-fi without any problem. And they stay connected. There was a power outage Christmas morning and when the power came back I didn't need to do anything to reconnect them. I was impressed. Two of us can watch streaming content at the same time with our 50mb download speed. No buffering required.

The home page that appears when you start the DVD player is simple and easy to navigate. My 88 year old mother doesn't seem to have any problems with it. Though she did complain about the small remote also. You can populate one side of the screen with your favorite streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu + or Amazon etc. You can also get YouTube which I like. There are music apps and a lot of others. Down at the bottom of the home page is where you can choose DVD plus two other options like USB input. I have not used the USB input.

I know there are a lot of other things I could tell everyone about but these were the major things I've noticed since I started using this player. I don't want to write a book but I hope this helps someone make a decision as to whether to buy it or not.

So far I am very happy with it and would recommend it to my friends.

This is a decent bluray player. Its small, very quiet, low wattage and works. The remote works for volume and input selection with my Sony TV as well. Little else can be asked of a BR player. I cant speak for the other features as frankly I can not stand using embedded devices I have no real control over the software being used if I can help it. It received four stars due to the documentation being effectively worthless and that in the included items it indicates it comes with an HDMI cable. It does not. Outside of those two items I have 26 hours of viewing in with no issues. Setup was fairly easy but I did run into one issue. See the attached image. When watching BR movies I was hearing garbled sound. This wound up being the setting "Audio DRC". It is on by default and causes all sorts of problems. Turning this off eliminated the garbled sound.

I believe any problems have been fixed with the latest software update. I'm not an expert though. So don't take my word for it. I just know it works great for me. Install was almost effortless - one hdmi cable (not included), plug the power in, turn it on, enter your wireless password. It took about as long to do as it did to type this review. The software update happened automatically as soon as it connected to the internet. On quality of player for this price point, it is everything I hoped it would be. For those that want more, better or faster features, I would suggest looking to a more expensive unit. This one fits the "good enough" to make me happy without overspending. I use this to play blue rays, and stream Netfix and Amazon Video. It does these very well!

I wanted a basic, inexpensive player for the living room. Got this for $49.99 on black Friday. I had been eyeing this unit for some time but hesitant because of the child lock problem. I do not stream. I wanted this for playing discs.
Hooked it up. Turned it on. Player instantly recognized my home Wi-Fi network. Entered modem password and was instantly connected.
Immediately there was an on screen notification of available update. Did the update and was ready to go.
Over the past week I have played several discs (BD, DVD, DVD-R) with no problems. Tray has opened every time.
Player is small, compact, can be placed anywhere. Reminds me of older external disc drives for PCs that came with full chassis.
Loads fast. Quiet. Again, can't comment on how well it streams but the Wi-Fi connection is solid.

We recently bought this Sony Blu-ray player to server our bedroom TV. The player itself is pretty compact, measuring 9" wide, 7 1/2" deep, and only 1 1/2" tall. The low height allowed it to fit just beneath my TV on it's factory stand, which is nice. I like that there's no bright display on the front of the unit, only a single small green LED light to indicate that it's on, limiting distraction. Setup was super fast, I had no trouble hooking it up to the TV with an HDMI cable I had laying around (unfortunately, no HDMI cable was included with the player). Connecting it to my Wifi and getting setup for streaming media took about 3 minutes and is easy enough to accomplish without needed the included instruction manual. Youtube and Amazon streamed flawlessly.

Blu-ray playback is as expected, fine. I'm no audio or video snob, but I didn't notice anything in the picture or audio that seemed any less good than what I get out of my other, older, Sony Blu-Ray player.

On the downside, the remote, as others have mentioned is pretty small with lots of tiny, similarly sized buttons. This makes it rather difficult to operate in a dark room.

I've only had the unit for about a month I'll update this review if the unit ends up breaking.

So far, I love this thing. Disc playback is great (my wife gets a ton of crap to watch on discs from friends and the local library) so a physical media playback device is necessary for our bedroom. Netflix and Amazon prime both work great (which are our two main streaming sources). Ran HDMI cable from player to television, plugged in power supply and connected to our wireless router (virtual keyboard sucks though) and that was it for installation. Immediately went to an update screen - I allowed it to download software/firmware and update. I have not gotten the child lock disc error that others have reported and we have owned for a week. Wi-fi connectivity is stable and fast. Of course, we have a FiOS quantum router nearby (802.11 a/c) so yeah - it better be stable and fast! User interface blows but given the el cheapo included remote, that's forgivable. You just have to use the D pad a lot and work through the on screen virtual keyboards carefully. This gives us the best of both worlds (disc playback and streaming capabilities) from one relatively inexpensive box so I can't complain too much. The basic functions are there and works well.

I bought this player to use in my bedroom. I also have the previous model, the 3500, in my living room from a previous purchase. First, it's a great blu ray player and I have no trouble getting it to read even DVDs from the local library. Compared to the previous model, this version is much faster, especially noticeable when browsing Youtube. On the 3500 it was kind of sluggish (not as bad as the Roku Stick but still pretty bad), but on the 3700 it navigates very smoothly. The 3700 also has some more apps than the 3500 but nothing that particularly interests me (mostly generic movie channels and Indian programming).

I do have two bones to pick with both models, however. First is the dedicated app buttons to things like Netflix on the controller. My big hands too often accidentally press it on the small controller. I ended up programming my universal remote to use in it but my universal remote doesn't have all the features as the Sony controller. Still beats it cutting to Netflix unexpectedly.

Second is that both models do not work well with HDMI switches/hubs. I have an older TV for my bedroom with only one HDMI port, so that is where my HDMI switch comes in. My HDMI switch has trouble with the Sony signal and will cycle between my different HDMI devices without actually displaying either one. Without the Sony blu ray player connected, the HDMI switch functions perfectly fine. I've read that this is a problem with Sony products in general, but I haven't tested it with my PS4 (it's in my living room on a newer TV). If you have this problem, the best solution I have found is resetting your surge protector(s) but you may still have to fiddle with the HDMI cables anyway. If you can get it set, you don't hsve to worry about it. But if you have to disconnect something or if your power goes out, you'll probably have to fix it again.

I've heard other people have had issuss with the disk tray but I personally have not run into this problem.

Overall, I would recommend this player.

I first bought this player to only play Blu Ray discs, but it very quickly replaced my Apple TV as my to-go streamer. It has Amazon Prime Video whereas Apple TV doesn't, so I can finally watch The Grand Tour on the big screen. I also simply found Netflix's UI to be much better and less clunky than Netflix on my Apple TV (although to be fair, my Apple TV was purchased in 2012, I would imagine that it's gotten better). Because of this, my Apple TV has officially been relegated to AirPlay use only and the Sony is my new daily driver. I also haven;t had the child lock issue that so many others have reported so I give its flawless operation five stars.

When my original Blu-Ray Disc Player conked out, I quickly purchased this unit for playing my DVDs on my smart TV. It is a very small unit and less than half the size of the previous one. It plays the DVDs just fine. I hadn't set it to link to my internet at first, and when I did that was difficult. I wanted to watch YouTube and connect to other devices. I kept putting in my internet password and it kept coming up that it was wrong. I went a little crazy trying to figure out if there was a different key or set of numbers it was requiring. After a lot of frustration, I went into setup and messed around with the settings for connection. This area hadn't been that obvious before and you have to hunt around for these advanced settings. I can't tell you what exactly worked, but it had something to do with a setting to grant connection permission and maybe even undo parental controls. It finally worked with my regular password after I messed with those settings. So, if you are having trouble, dig into those settings and make sure things are set for YES or ON, etc.

I don't believe this even came with a manual, but I did find one online to try to help figure out the issues. Even with that, it was rather just a lucky find to get the right settings.

I also learned that this device only works with the 2.4GHz network of my router, and does not work with the 5GHz network (my router has both.)

I can stream Netflix now right from Xfinity, and I have a Amazon drive for Amazon Prime, so I don't know if I'll be that troubled by not being able to use the more powerful 5GHz for streaming, since I have other options. Anyway - the price was right for this, and you can use it for non-Blu-Ray DVDs.
