There once was a tortoise,
Her friends call her Clyde.
She likes to go wandering
And then likes to hide.
A remote little corner,
A tortoise-sized nook
Maybe under the dresser
Or nestled with books.
The darker the better,
A good place to snooze.
All quiet and comfy
Is where she will choose.
It's all well and good
'Til it's time to come home.
You'd think I could find her,
But this time ... heck no.
Will she come when called? She's a tortoise, so ... no.
Will she make any noise? She never has. (It's the boys that tend to make noise, and then under very ... special ... circumstances.)
Will she snooze for the better part of THREE OR FOUR DAYS (or more) because it's winter and that's what she does? YES!
So, given the above, after a couple of cursory searches, did I then crawl around on my hands and knees with a flashlight at 11 PM? Yes.
Twice?? Yes.
The second time, did I break out my professional-grade knee pads because nobody over the age of twelve should be crawling around on hardwood floors, AKA, I'M TOO OLD FOR THIS CRAP?? Yes.
Did I spend a restless night dreaming of turtle-gobbling house-coyotes and turtle-sized holes in my walls where she could fall into the crawl space and get trapped and starve to death? Yeah. She owes me big for that.
The next morning, did I begin to methodically tear up my house, moving every piece of furniture that she could conceivably hide behind, looking in places that a baby mouse couldn't squeeze into, much less a 1.5-lb. tortoise? Why, YES. Yes I did, and thanks for asking.
Did I drag out the vacuum cleaner because OMG it's astonishing how much dust accumulates under there? Sigh. Yes.
Halfway through, did I enlist the assistance of a highly-amused friend? Yes. HIGHLY amused.
And did we find the errant tortoise five minutes later in the VERY NEXT CLOSET? Of COURSE we did.
The same closet that I had looked in THREE times already? At LEAST three times.
(Do I have any clue how she got in there, because I don't remember that particular door being open at any point the day before? Nope, still no idea.)
Do I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PRODUCT?? Seriously? At this point, do you have to ask? Yes. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product, especially for anyone with a small, house-roaming tortoise.
P.S. Right, the actual review. I like this particular product because it's small and light enough not to bother the tortoise, you can replace the battery, and there are four fobs in case she gets another friend or three (her current friend has exactly two hiding places, and I know them both). I also like that it's "base" oriented and not "app" oriented. Apps can get updated past the phone's OS, get deprecated, or otherwise just go away (e.g., the company gets bought and tanked by a competitor). This thing worked Day 1 and will work after the zombie apocalypse takes out the internets.
P.P.S. Kiddies, don't use anything permanent to attach - no glue, or velcro, or even super-sticky tape. Your tortoise can definitely feel it (her shell is a lot like your fingernail, and her spine is actually at the very top). I used low-adhesive masking tape, then stuck it to my sweatshirt once or twice for good measure. Worked like a champ.
P.P.P.S. Her name isn't really Clyde, but I'm claiming poetic license (I'm an Amazon reviewer, not the poet laureate).
Do you have kids? We have three of them. By the time I get home from a long day at work, sometimes I just need a little Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Before I got these, there was this hellish period of "You've got to be kidding me? What do you mean you don't remember where you put it?!?!" Sure, we had a designated basket where the remotes should go, but they'd be under the couch, under a blanket, in the next room, etc.
Now, all I do is click a button on the base remote and the fob chimes away and we have fun finding the cussed little devices. Sure, they still end up in every conceivable unusual spot, but now we can find them.
It works through furniture, at least 20-30 feet away. If there are walls involved, no biggie, I just walk around with the remote clicker and push a few times. Never failed us in about two months of use. If you'd like to use it for keys, I think it would work equally as well.
Each fob chime it a simple series of beeps, but each has a different note or tone. So if you're searching for multiple items at a time, you'll just hear different notes.
My only complaint is the form factor doesn't work aesthetically for our current use, but we don't care. Now we can find our remotes in seconds. I'd give it 4-4.5 stars for that, but the positive impact it's had on this small sliver of our lives is fantastic. First world problem, but now it's solved.
I highly recommend this product!
I've uploaded a short video that demonstrates the key..now cat...finder in use. The first scene shows our gray cat reacting the very first time his collar beeped (shot indoors while the cat was in his play tent.) The second scene demonstrates the cat finder working after the cat sneaked through the fence to hide in the bushes around the neighbor's porch. The third scene is from our own garden where we have a dense philodendron thicket. Unfortunately, my cell phone microphone did a poor job of picking up the beeping during that recording but the sound was clearly audible from at least 20 feet. There is a set of ten rapid beeps with each button press (I triggered the beeping additional times out of frame in both the outdoor scenes.)
Update after 5 months of use:
The battery on one of the receivers died after what I estimate to be about 700 activations. Not a big deal since the replacement is the very common 2025 disc battery BUT I also dropped the sending unit about 4 feet onto concrete which caused it to stop working. I immediately ordered another set from Amazon and was hoping not to have to change out the receiver fobs on the cat collars but alas the new sending unit was not compatible with the old receivers so I had to break a few nails switching to the new fobs.
I put these on my cat, dog, kid, and wife. Now I know when my wife is in the other room texting her BF and I know when my kids have run off with the neighbor boy because I can't hear the beep. My cat, she sleeps all day so it's nice to wakes her up with the beeping to get her off the couch and motivated to loose some weight. I still loose my keys, but my family.....is never lost.
We don't lose our keys often, but when it happens it can be very frustrating trying to retrace our steps. These arrived the other day and I put the batteries in each receiver and tested them. The lithium coin cells are included, the two AAA batteries for the transmitter is not. The backs of the receivers open with a coin, be sure to put the + side of the battery facing UP. They work great, just as described, even heard it from the floor below. This locator would have saved me a lot of worry last week, which is when I decided to get a key locator. These are too thick for things like wallets (unless it has a change compartment) or iPods, smart phones. But they would work great with remotes if you don't mind the thickness of the receiver. JUST DON'T COVER UP THE LITTLE HOLE OVER THE BEEPER or the beeps will be muffled and hard to hear.
The warranty card recommends registering your unit on line and your 12 month warranty goes up to 2 years. But their web site did not have a page to register the devices! So I took a screen image of my Amazon sale confirmation and emailed it to support@eskynow.com asking how I can register it and get the extended warranty. A day or two later I got an email reply that I had my extra year warranty, and if it warranty service was needed just email them and include my order number for warranty coverage.
The receivers seem rugged, but they aren't waterproof. Would not use it for any items or pets that might get wet.

This has made my life so much easier. My husband is thinking of duct taping one to the remote control. You get 4 and you have to keep the locator in the same place. I swear this will save you sooooooo much time and that horrible feeling when you are late and cannot find your keys. Get it don't hesitate. AWESOME CHRISTMAS OR WHATEVER YOU CELEBRATE GIFT.
I love this idea! Received few weeks ago, setting it up a a breeze! Was super easy to use when I tested it out, and its just such a great idea!!!
I give it 5 stars, because it arrived fast, works as promised, and no complaints.
I do have a couple ideas for improvement, which would really set it apart from similar products. I tried to find a set that had a locator that would work with glasses, but none exist that I could find. These are too big for that idea, which is a bummer. That said, this was one of the smallest sized packs I found (size of the 4 locators) which I was paying close attention to.
These are still a bit too big to fit on my remotes without being cumbersome. Theyre smaller than most others i looked at, but still could be better if 1/8" or less in depth. In fact, one already had to be re-stuck to my dish remote, because they are just sticking off the underside because there isnt a good place to attach smoothly and they're bulky, so if you're not careful they can be knocked off due to their size and width.
But like I said, these are smallest size locators I looked at, and I have no reason to rate anything under 5 stars at this time.
I'd love to see a flatter, smaller version of these, and maybe even include one super-micro thin and tiny one that would fit on a glasses behind-ear band. My bf loses his glasses all the time!
Anyway, that's my wish.
But bottom line for this item; so worth it, and the next time you lose your remote control, you'll wish you'd bought this!
I did NOT receive anything for my review, I bought this for myself with my own money, and am very happy with it so far. :)
This works as it should. I purchased it to attach to my Amazon fire remote. That thing is so small that I am constantly losing it. These little fobs are a little big for that. Are they usable? Sure! Just a bit big and in the way. I got used to it. It beats searching for the remote every day. I will likely put a key chain loop on one and make it so that I can hook it to my phone some how when I'm home (which is where I usually lose my phone- thanks kids!) These are too big to use on my phone all of the time. Perfect size for keys. I have terrible hearing but I'm able to find these every time. Great product.
This product comes with batteries and tiny metal rings for each of the fobs. The remote does require batteries that are not provided. I lose my keys all the time, usually in the house. They have a mind of their own(Once they snuck into the oven), and I have been powerless against them. All jobs are easier when you have the perfect tools. This key finder has done the trick. I set up the base in a central location and made sure it was convenient to keep the remote in place. What good would key fobs be without the remote. The base is essential. The remote has a built in light to aid in your search when it's time for action. The rings used to attach the fobs are tiny and I had a little trouble getting them in at first but after the first couple it went more smoothly. I then attached them to my keys, my husbands keys and my phone (never again will I ask my family to call me so I can find the phone only to find out it was set on vibrate). Most importantly, the sound emitted by the fob when the corresponding button is pressed on the remote is piercing. One of the new favorite games of my child is pushing it just to see me jump out of my skin. I hope that gets old fast. My only wish is that I bought these months ago before I lost my last set of keys which are still MIA.
So far, this item has been a blessing! In less than a week it has helped me find two sets of "misplaced:" car keys. We have a couch that actively devours things like keys, ipads, wallets, tv controls, etc. Its favorite food is handkerchiefs! So far, the only criticism I can make is that having the sound level higher would be a help. If - in the future - this gizmo lets me down, I will change my rating. For now, I cannot praise it too much!
A unit that is set up to locate 8 "misplaced items" would be an even greater boon!
