Frontier Berbere Seasoning ORGANIC 2.3 oz Bottle

Frontier Berbere Seasoning ORGANIC 2.3 oz Bottle

I am REALLY loving the flavors of this seasoning. As a health coach I always coach my clients to keep their flavor palette fresh, use whole foods and turn to spices for amazing experiences. It's easy to eat clean, have a ton of flavor and have health benefits from herbs, spices, etc. I'm new to using this brand, and when I bought this is just sounded good. MMMM. :) I got this for myself and our family and find this is becoming a 'go to' staple for my cooking lately. I love the convenience and appreciate how this company is bringing products to market.

I am a lover of hot and spicy food but if I had to choose between flavor and heat, I'd want flavor. With this mix, I found it was heat first, then flavor. The heat superseded everything else and I lost the subtly of all the various spices in the mix. I tried stepping down the amount I'd use in any dish but then would always think it "needed something." I like it, just not sure I'd buy it again until I experimented with other brands/mixes.

This is very good Berbere toned down a notch or two from what my Ethiopian friends use. And that is good, for you can always add more, never put out the "fire" in an over-seasoned food. For my wife and most friends it is perfect "as is"; for me, a dash of sriracha brings is just the right boost. We use this berbere with Ethiopian style chickpea and lentil stews, vegetarian main courses that need only a salad and bread to complete the meal. Our Ethiopian friends make a bread salad seasoned with berbere, something like the Italian panzanella with a dose of the African sun. I gotta try to prepare that soon.

Making Berebere in the US is tough. The ingredients available to your average cook are not fresh enough to create an authentic flavor. We were buying our spices in ziplock bags at a local gas station (long story) which tasted great, but we ended up with kitchen moths. I was excited to see this at a local Whole Foods (less expensive on Amazon). While it does not taste as authentic as one would get in a restaurant or from the gas station spices, it comes somewhat close. I make more than Ethiopian/Eritrean food with it. I use it as a dry rub on roasted chicken, in hamburgers, and in sauce.

I'm really into Berbere (thanks, Marcus Samuelsson!). I've been putting it in my chili for awhile, and today it was the sole spice (a curry replacement) I used in some Hoppin' John (black-eyed pea stew). Wow! I cook a lot of vegetarian dishes, and I'm looking forward to continuing to put this valued spice through its paces, especially in dishes where I have traditionally used curry.

Description

Frontier Organic Berbere Seasoning combines 12 warm, aromatic spices to produce this wonderful, spicy blend which has its origins in Ethiopia. It has a very coarse, earthy texture and adds a zesty hot flavor to meats when used as a rub for grilling, barbecuing or pan frying.

This makes an amazing Doro Wat or Sega Wat to be served with traditional injera. It is also delish in bbq sauce, butternut squash mac 'n' cheese, great in turkey burgers or ground meat dishes such Moussaka for a change - so tasty.
We love how spicy it is! My children handle very hot food and simply love the taste: my son has even sprinkled it on grilled cheese, but it is very spicy for those that are wondering, so start out cautiously.....I nearly blew my hubby's head off the first time I used it.
The seasoning is spot-on and this particular brand always seems to be fresh regardless of the seasoning you pick.
Now I'm hungry....where can I sprinkle this now.....

More cinnamon than curry mixes and while I am not a huge fan, this mix pulls it off, still delivering some Scoville action, and a variety of flavors. I have added it to hummos, yogurt, as well as conventional curry assemblages. Not near as spicy as the average Ethiopian restaurant dishes I have had, but that is easily remedied. Anyway, for me it has been an interesting change of pace

This is an excellent flavor, but be aware that it contains a significant amount of salt. There's 230mg of sodium in each teaspoon. That seems rather high for a spice blend, but it was perfect as a spice for lentil salad.

A truly authentic, lovely spice used in Ethiopian cookery which tastes just great. I liked it very much! Having tried Ethiopian food for the first time recently, this duplicated the real flavor of the food from this region of the world and is a wonderful addition to other foods, such as cous cous or meats or veggies. Very good product which is now a pantry staple for me.

Great blend of spices for an authentic Ethiopian taste! I use this to make Doro Wat (chicken stew) and Beg Wot (lamb stew) all the time. Highly recommend it!
