All in all this is a great drive for the price and size of storage. I purchased this drive for the sole purpose of editing my video and photo files on the go and switch from computer to computer without uploading large gb files to the cloud.
Here are my conclusions:
The drive is quite small and lightweight. I have used quite a bit of the LaCie rugged drives in the past and they can be fairly bulky. This drive could slip easily into a slim laptop neoprene case or even a jacket pocket. (See photos). The marketing says its scratch resistant but I dont see that being a reality. The plastic casing on top and bottom is your standard ABS so im sure you will be able to get a scratch or ding or 2 over time.
The USB port on the drive itself is a full size USB-C type connector and it is colored the correct Blue (pantone 300) indicating it is in fact a USB 3.0 port. The packaging states USB 3.1 Gen 1 however that confused me because technically USB 3.1 is Gen 2. I tested the speed (see photos) and the average rate was 120.5 MB/s read and 122.5 MB/s write. This is where the drive gets the most stars. USB 3.0 average speed tables are around 60 MB/s so the 3.1 format is clocking at x2 the speed which is just about right, comparative to other 3.1 USB drives. Now to put that into comparison for folks who really need all the speed they can get, the average internal HD clocks in about 300 MB/s so keep that in mind. A USB external drive isnt going to give you the same kind of results. So choose your use case for these types of drives carefully. Testing against my Seagate 5tb tabletop external drives which are also USB 3.1 the write speed is about the same but the read speed on my Seagates are only 95 MB/s. The bench computer is a 27" iMac i7.
The drive comes formatted as FAT32. I reformatted it to be a standard Mac OS Extended (journaled) which is compatible with Time Machine so you can use this for your Mac OS backup drive.
I like the convenience of attaching the USB cable to the exterior so you don't have to find another place to store a cable, or possibly forgetting it all together. Keep in mind the clips that hold the USB cable are removable. They slip into a silicone rubber channel and do come out if you pull the USB cord hard enough. I don't see a reason why this should be an issue but its also designed not to be permanent so keep that in mind. The cable is also short. I would say 12" port to port.
There's 2 non-slip rubber channels on the base so that it wont slide around too much on your desk and the same soft silicone rubber around the entire edges of the drive. They don't stick out past the hard plastic top and bottom however so not sure how effective they would be in dampening the shock from a fall on the corners which is probably the most lethal spot. Keep in mind this drive is NOT a SSD drive (or it would cost a lot more) so don't drop it while it's in use.
PROS:
Lightweight
Fast 3.1 USB r/w
Small Size
Convenient Cable Storage
Low Cost
CONS:
Not as durable as can be. I give it 4 stars for its construction/durability
Not a SSD drive
If you like my review please give it Helpful thumbs up!
»I've been using this drive at work and home and am very happy with its performance and design. I have the 1TB model which when formatted in Windows using NTFS ended up being 932GBs.
»The outer casing consists of hard plastic and the green silicone material you can see in the photos. The green silicone is actually what is surrounding the hard drive inside, protecting it from drops and is how the 'suspension system' works. The green silicone also has a slot that goes all the way around which is used to hold onto the included USB 3.0 cable using 2 clips. The 2 plastic pieces simply screw into each other on each side using 4 screws. The USB port has a flap in the silicone to keep it closed and free of dust when not in use. There are also 2 openings on the bottom plastic part where 2 green strips come through and provide grip on whatever surface you put it on, preventing slips. Simple and effective design for protection, grip and convenience.
»There is no external powered needed for this, power it taken from the USB port on whatever device you are using it with
»Copying to and from the drive was speedy and I the speeds I received when running a speed test were about what I expected for a traditional hard drive over USB 3.0. I attached a photo of my results which were 120.0MB read and 115.8MB write for sequential writes. I'm not sure if Silicon Power wanted me to do this, but I did it anyways, I unscrewed the 4 screws to see what drive was inside. I know Silicon Power does not manufacture hard drives like Western Digital and Seagate do. I was hoping to find a brand name from one of the very few large drive manufacturers and I am happy to report I did. Inside is a 1TB standard Seagate laptop drive. Not some cheap white label drive, a quality brand drive. Good choice.
»I have not tested the ability to survive a drop because I am actually using this on a daily basis so I am being slightly cautious. I am however throwing it into a backpack filled with things and plopping it down on a desk multiple times a day, you don't want to treat any standard hard drive with moving parts too terribly, but so far so good, no problems with performance or any strange issues.
»Overall this has been a great drive for me and I recommend it to anyone looking for a more durable external drive to take on the go, if anything changes I will update this review in the future.
*I received this product at a discount in exchange for an honest review, I hope this review was helpful.
I got this to replace an old WD external drive that had failed.
This is essentially a $60 2TB drive plus a $25 ruggedized IPX7 case, reasonable prices for both.
I use it as an offline backup of my online backup of my Google Drive (always have redundant backups of important data), so speed is not nearly as important as durability. The drive will eventually fail, as all drives do, but I intend to re-use the case when that happens.. There will likely be higher-speed ports by then, but as this is for archival storage, the USB3 will be fine with me for a very long time as long as SATA drives are available.
Modern 2TB drives don't draw much power, so the assembly is powered entirely from USB. As far as I see, the enclosure has no capability to be powered from an external source.
I bought this external hard drive to use to store all my important documents and photos somewhere other than my pc. I had a different one for several years, but it has gotten to the point where the cord I use for it no longer stays connected so I had to get another before I lost everything. This one works great! I love the fact that it uses a usb cord both ways so my cord began to give me issues, it would be easy to replace. I also like that this is very rugged and waterproof as I like to sometimes carry it with me in my purse. Hoperfully the capacity of 1TB will take a long time for me to fill.
My only issue has been with the little side rubber hooks that are supposed to keep the cord on the unit, as one already came off and I have misplaced it in my purse.
Very happy with this overall and can highly recommend.
great product. I just plugged it into my ps4 and my system detected it, asked me if I wanted to use extended storage and it was set up. Transferred 450gb of data to it in 40 minutes. No sound from it to worry about and makes my system run faster as far as menus go, now that the external hard drive has freed up space for the basic programs to use from the original hard drive. Do not think you will get faster load times I have not really noticed any difference. I had issues with lagging when trying to go to the power off menu or other main menus on the ps4 due to a almost full original 500gb hd this has solved those issues for me. Don't know if others will find the same results but I'm thoroughly pleased.

Well packaged and shipped promptly. The product description on Amazon indicates that the drive is USB 3.0, but the package says that it is actually USB 3.1 which is nice. The drive is sleek and feels very solid in your hand. The rubberized edges make it easy to maintain a firm grip. The drive is recognized immediately when you you plug it in with the included USB cable, with no initial setup required. The USB cable is about 12 inches long and fits into 2 rubber clips on the sides of the drive, which is nice. However; when in use, your placement options are limited by the short cable length, . All in all, the drive is exactly as described and just what I wanted. Thanks so much!
I plan to take this as a storage device for my photos as a companion to my laptop when we visit another country known for extremely high humidity, bad roads, sandy beaches and very wet conditions during the rainy season, and it is small, compact, and rugged. It is also my backup drive the rest of the time. Before you start loading all your files on it, be sure to check to see how it has been formatted. If it is a FAT 32, reformat it to NTFS so you can have the greater USB 3 speed. (Right click and choose Properties - General - File system to see) Incredibly fast! I love the attached cable for use on the road, but it comes with a longer one as well. To keep it clean, I LOGICally bought a portable EVA hard drive case just for extra protection from backpack lint and sand.
This thing is amazing! My sons finally ran out of storage on the PS4 and this made it so they can still play and add games. Since it’s external and portable makes it even better when they want to stay overnight or just to play games at friends houses, now they can take their fav games with them. I like the fact it’s water resistant and protects from drops as well so I know it will be safe with the boys taking along with them. Will most definitely order another, my hubby and I want to get one to transfer phone data to so we don’t keep running out of cloud storage.
This is a fantastic external hard drive. I use this to store my massive collection of movies, shows and my photos/videos.
I have had this plugged in for many hours a day every day for months playing videos straight off of it and have had no over heating issues or any other problems. I am quite impressed and surprised at how reliable this hard drive has been. I have dropped it onto my hard wood floors and spilled coffee on it twice and it wasn't even phased. I would definitely recommend buying this to anyone in need of a tough and reliable external hard drive.
