Wow! Where has this stuff been all my life? I purchased this for my husband, a Manhattan lover, for Christmas, and it's delicious in cocktails, but a couple of drops puts salad dressings and hot cocoa over the top into the realm of the sublime. It needs to be added to something sweet/savory--it was so delicious in cocoa, I tried some on its own, but "bitter" was the word--paired with a vinaigrette or cherry, or chocolate, wow, oh, wow, oh wow!
You're welcome.
I love this bitters. Here is a recipe for my new favorite drink-
This is essentially a Utah sazerac, traditionally made with Absinthe which is very expensive and nearly unavailable at the state run liquor stores here. I substitute a little ouzo, I cannot stress enough how little. I just 'wash' the glass with it and let any extra run out before continuing.
2oz. of High West Double Rye
The barest whisper of Ouzo, just the tiniest splash.
1-2 dashes of Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters ( I like 2 but 1 is probably sufficient.)
One decent sized piece of Orange Peel, the less of the white bitter pith the better, I like to shoot for one thumb sized peel of just the zest part of the peel.
Throw it all together in a rocks glass over ice and enjoy.
A few Christmas' ago I got a "Black walnut Old Fashioned" at a local bar and had to know what the bartender was using. He pointed me in the direction of these bitters and they taste great. I use them as a direct substitution for Angostura bitters to give the drink a more earthy flavor. I have found that they will also make the drink slightly more dark, but I'm not complaining. Solid buy and great to have around.
Try adding these bitters to your Manhattan Cocktail for a refined and nutty flavor. No really, try it! My local bartender and I got into a heated discussion about the perfect Manhattan recipe - which could only be solved by making his recipe and mine and having a taste test. My recipe was the hands down undisputed winner and it's all because of the Fee Black Walnut Bitters addition, as our recipes were nearly identical - the Black Walnut Bitters really brought the win home!
Serves 1
6 dashes Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters
1 oz Carpano Antica Vermouth
2 oz of your favorite Rye Whiskey (we like Bulleit, WhistlePig)
add ice and STIR (do not shake!)
-
Strain into a glass, add rocks if you wish or serve up with a Luxardo cherry (none of that bright red dye happening here).
These bitters are amazing! They are our absolute favorite bitters for old fashions, and they are so delicious on ice cream too. I always buy 2 because we use them so much. My husband has even added them to just straight Coke and said it was awesome. I wish they were available locally because if we run out, we have to wait for shipping (although Prime is always fast anyway). We were going to make some old fashions with them when my brother was visiting at my parents' house, but we forgot to bring them and couldn't find them in the local stores unfortunately. The old fashions were fine with regular Angostura and the aged orange bitters from Fee Brothers, but the black walnut adds such a warm comforting note that it was missed for sure!

I've ordered about 5 bottles over the years and find the Walnut Bitters continue to be an all time favorite. Authentic and clean in flavor.... not perfumed nor synthetic at all. Superb in an Old Fashioned or in a Bourbon and Ginger Ale. I've given a few as gifts because it is really a great cocktail must. I hear it can be used in cooking as well so I may add several dashes to my coffee cake and pound cake recipe to try. Love this Walnut Bitters.
There is a lovely book called The Tourquoise Grill. In it there is a receipe for a wonderous drink called The Brattlehatten. (The Tourquoise Grill is in Brattleboro, Vt.) One of the delectable contents of a Brattlehattan is Black Walnut Bitters. It does it's job well, and adds a totally unique quality. Declan, bartender superior, is responsible for both book and receipes. Wonderful.
Black walnut bitters make the best old fashions! They are so good, with a warm nutty flavor that enhances any drink made with brown liquor such as whiskey, bourbon, even brandy. I haven't used it on ice cream yet, but I can see where that would be delicious. This is a must have for us just like angosturas and orange bitters.
Love this bitters. It tastes exactly as you would hope and expect - dark and earthy and walnut-ty. I've been using it to make a drink with bourbon, a healthy amount of these bitters, some dark maple syrup, and a drop or two of vanilla and it's fantastic. Would definitely recommend
Purchased his item specifically to craft a cocktail called the Black Manhattan. It’s the essential ingredient. A very nice change from the traditionally used angostura bitters.
