PowerA Wireless GameCube Style Controller for Nintendo Switch - Purple

PowerA Wireless GameCube Style Controller for Nintendo Switch - Purple

First off, to those out there who are struggling with their controller setups on smash ultimate, this controller falls under the pro-controller/joy-con setup. You DO NOT use the gamecube controller setup to change the controls for this controller. On the control setup screen, there's a "in use" bubble over which controller scheme you are using. I hope this saves some anguish for some.

That being said, I like this controller! It feels pretty similar to the regular gamecube controller, while heavier at the same time! Works pretty well with ultimate, and its nice to have a controller that feels like a gamecube controller, but is useable in other switch games!

I only have a few gripes with this controller
1. HD rumble/rumble support would have been nice. I personally don't care much for an NFC reader/writer, but Idk, it just felt nice having rumble.
2. Batteries. Not a huge issue if you have rechargeable ones (which aren't too expensive), but it would have been nice.
3. The ZR trigger feels...off for some reason. It's harder to click into compared to the ZL trigger. Not a deal breaker, but it would be nice not to have this issue.

To start off it feels great, exactly like a Gamecube controller, same quality feel and grip. The face buttons are nice and clicky, the left analog stick feels a tad smaller, and the now R and L buttons that was just a Z button feel bigger and nicer than the super small original Z shoulder button. The big grey shoulder buttons are now ZL and ZR which have been reduced in size a good bit and also are only digital now, so they don't feel quite as nice as the original GC design. Also the D-pad is larger and nicer feeling.

The C-stick is the only thing I'm disappointed with, it has no grip on it like the Nintendo GC one, it's just a hard plastic that doesn't work all that great for games that need precise aim. It also might be a little more resistant, but the original GC sticks were pretty damn resistant as well. That's really my only con. Tested it with Windows 10 bluetooth and it synced up real fast, worked perfectly fine with the Dolphin emulator, so that's a big plus. If you've always liked the GC controller get this thing, it's worth it. Hoping it lasts a long time.

Update: The analog stick on PC isn't working quite right. Holding the stick all the way to one side doesn't fully register so when playing some games turning is slow or doesn't even work at all in some menus. I attached a picture of the properties. A firmware update could fix this issue though.

Feels perfect, I will be ordering another one right now for Player 2.

Please make a USB-C Lithium-Ion version

Best pro controller option for the switch! I’ve always been a fan of the layout of the game cube controller. The controller has a very nice feeling to hand and actually I have found to be better to use in shooters like Doom than the pro controller (even has superior motion control support). I think the extra resistance on the analog sticks has a lot to do with it. The only thing that some people may not like is that the trigger buttons do you have a lot of travel before the tactile click that actuates them. Best way to work around it is to keep them depressed while holding the controller so that you just have to apply a little pressure to get past the bump at the end of the travel. It’s a shame that the switch doesn’t support progressive travel on their triggers because it would make these really ideal for racing games due to the immense amount of travel. The fact that this controller has all of the buttons needed to play any game, it’s not just limited to smash brothers. Another thing that makes this controllers superior to the pro controller and a lot of other third-party controllers is the fact that the plus, minus, picture, and home buttons or actually raised rather than flush with the face of the controller which makes them much easier to access. For games that require access to the menu on a regular basis having those buttons raised makes them far more accessible. The only downside is the lack of rumble , which for me is not a big deal but there are some games where it does play a part where I kind of miss it. Honestly I miss the weight of the rumble motors more than the rumble itself. This will actually replace my pro controller as my go to controller going forward, the only thing I might do to it to make it more well-rounded is to replace the C stick with the same analog stick as on the left side and while I have it open perhaps add something to the grips to give it a little more weight.

Another great thing about these controllers which haven’t been mentioned a lot is the fact that, just like the enhanced controller that powera also makes, this is one of the few, if not the only third-party wireless controller for the switch that can actually turn on the switch with the menu button. Many others require you to use another controller to turn it on and then pair the controller.

Every review that I’ve seen for this controller has commented on the fact that it takes batteries as a negative. As someone that has never had a problem with the Xbox still using batteries I have always had a drawer full of them so it’s no problem for me, the battery life is quite long however I don’t think the controller has any indicator when the battery is low and that would be the only downside in terms of the batteries. Since the switch controllers don’t use batteries it doesn’t register the battery level of this controller so as far as I can tell there’s no way to tell when the batteries are low.

Overall, in my opinion, the best pro controller option for the switch to date. Why four stars you ask? Mainly because the picture in the description says that these are purple and really the color is blue or rather indigo, Definitely not even close to being purple ( see my pic of the comptroller next to a purple xbox one controller) But that aside, and absolutely fantastic controller!

I still play my GameCube regularly and the GameCube controller has always been one of my favorite designs. This controller is the same shape and size and almost feels the same to hold. The big difference in feel is the PowerA controller is made from a matte plastic where the original is made from a glossy smooth plastic. To make this a fully compatible Switch pro controller some things needed to change. This controller has a L and R shoulder button where the Original only had a Z button on the right. The L and R are bigger than the original Z button which I feel is a nice change. Both sticks are also clickable and home, share, and minus (select) buttons were added. It also has Gyro so motion control games (like Splatoon 2 aiming) work as it should. The D-Pad is actually bigger than the Original Gamecube controller, which is great as that was one of its biggest flaws. It might eve be better than the Pro Controller D-pad.

This controller isn't perfect, there is no rumble and there is no NFC. The triggers are Digital unlike the Original, and they have travel as they were analogue. That means you need to press them all the way down to activate. I wish they would have made the triggers digital and a quick click instead.

This is the GameCube design so you will find many games don't have the buttons configured in a way that works well with this controller, and many games don't have the option for customizing controls. I have played tons on Mario Kart, Mario tennis and Mario Kart on the GameCube, this controller feels natural with those games on the Switch as with Smash Bros of course.

One more thing some people might not like is that it takes 2 AA batteries instead of having a rechargeable battery built in. Personally I prefer this, I don't have to worry about built in batteries going bad in the future.

I love the purchase, I might get another one to have different colors (I wish they had Spice Orange), and for my son to use. My only true gripe is the shoulder buttons, I wish they didn't have the large travel and were a quick click like the Switch Pro Controllers. I would have liked rumble and NFC, but I have to remember this is $30 cheaper than the Switch Pro controller and fully licensed, so I think the price is fair for what you get.

One more thing, this controller will wake your Switch from sleep (I assume because it is officially licensed), many other 3rd party controllers wont. That's a huge plus in my book.

First of all let me just say that I personally love this controller. As a big-time fan of smash on all consoles the GC controller has definitely been my peripheral of choice for playing smash bros. Also this is a pretty good deal because using the wired gamecube controllers requires the use of the adapter which is sold out everywhere (because Nintendo). That brings the real price of one GC wired controller up to $50 (same as this) which unless you use multiple GC controllers is a no-brainer. This controller however is better than the original GC controller imo because it has all inputs (specifically L&R AND Triggers) which the original gc controller didn't have the "L" button. That and the fact that this controller registers on the system as a "Pro Controller" AND has the screenshot and home buttons means that this controller can be used on ANY game,, not just smash bros. This controller also features motion controls which ofcourse the original did NOT have, which is cool for games like splatoon and BoTW which helps A LOT with aiming imo and is welcome in my book. Pairing is super easy as well and doesn't require any annoying dongles or anything which is awesome. Now, not all things for this controller are good though, personally I LOVE the fact that the controller is supper light but some people feel that it makes the controller feel cheap, to each their own I guess. Of note is also the fact that the controller runs of batteries which may also be a good/bad thing in your opinion, I don't mind too much since I just swap out rechargeable batteries as needed and the battery life seems to be pretty good I think though admittedly I haven't had the time for all-day play sessions like I used to so I can't say too much about that. Also last but not least --And this may be a deal-breaker for some of you--THERE IS NO RUMBLE OR NFC SUPPORT. I didn't know before I bough it but I personally don't notice it too much. I find that rumble doesn't really add too much to the game now that I've been playing without it but it is something that we've come to expect from controllers now so it is something of note. Personally I feel the trade-offs (motion controls, weight, wireless, ease of use) are worth it but it may not be for you, though I would have liked for a "premium" edition with rumble and NFC support for maybe $70 to be available since that's the price of regular PRO controllers anyway...Also apparently people who've torn down these controllers claim there is a lot of empty space in the shell, namely the handles which could have had the rumble motors inserted there to add weight for balance as well. In any case The controller feels exactly like the original gc controller to me other than the wight, but it doesn't feel "cheap" imo, and the fact that it doesn't have the added weights doesn't make it feel noticeable unbalanced or anything so all in all I really like this controller and will probably buy a spare before scalpers charge an arm and a leg for them later.

I like this better than a standard GameCube controller for several reasons. 1, it's Bluetooth wireless. 2, has both extra shoulder buttons like a modern controller. 3, has gyro and motion support. 4, the triggers have less travel time when pressed as the spring has much more give (great for fast Smashing). 5, the D-Pad is considerably bigger than the GameCube. 6, has all four Switch specific buttons (-, +, Home, Capture).

Only a few downsides. 1, does not support rumble (this is probably the biggest downside). 2, the triggers aren't analogue (meaning pressure sensitive) so it's either pressed or unpressed (not a problem in most games other than racing). 3, lacks Amiibo NFC reader.

One more thing that's kind of a personal gripe with all modern controllers. Nowadays manufacturers use L and R as the buttons on top of the triggers and instead use the triggers as ZL and ZR. Unlike how XBox 360 has the triggers as L and R and the buttons on top as "L Bumper" and "R Bumper". The original GameCube had the analogue triggers as L and R and the single bumper as simply Z. This controller, with the addition of the extra bumper) switches the configuration with the triggers as ZL and ZR and the bumpers as L and R. So this can be seen as a plus to most players as it's the way most controllers are configured (including the joycons and pro controller). However, I don't like it.

Huge fan of this controller. I have 2 sets of Joycons and 2 Pro Controllers, but this is my go-to now. I logged about 40 hours over the Christmas break with this thing, throwing every game I could at it that supports traditional controller schemes (obviously that excludes Pokemon: Let's Go and Super Mario Party). The gyro worked great on Splatoon 2. Mario Kart 8 was a blast. No severe lag with Super Smash Bros, although I don't play competitively. All the Indies I play felt like they were made for this controller. I grew up on the GameCube so the ergonomics were familiar. I think it's a great ode to the original, and feels better than the Wavebird due to the orientation of the battery compartment. Some may view a non-rechargeable controller as a downside, but for me I prefer loose batteries. I frequently go long stretches of time without playing and would rather pop new batteries in than be tethered via a USB cable. The build quality was on par with what you'd expect from a Nintendo-licensed product.

I bought this controller specifically for Super Smash Bros - Ultimate. The pro controller layout just is not the best for this game, and while playing the game I just wanted to have an old GC controller. Even with a custom pro controller configuration, I still prefer the GC era controller button layout. I looked into different options, and it seems like there are basically 2 options. You can hook up old gamecube controllers with a dongle, or you can just buy one of these retro styled wireless pro controllers. Competitors and extra ordinary gamers will definitely lead you more toward the wired dongle, and wired controller method. They're concerned with latency and button response processing down to the Nanosecond. This wireless controller is definitely more for the home player who doesn't care about competing, may be older and played Smash Bros Melee , and just prefers the GC controller layout (specifically for smash). It's a great option, and I'm glad it's available.

Pros: This controller connects to the switch easily, and can be customized just like any pro controller. In fact, I believe it shows up as just another Pro controller. I don't see any obvious latency or slow down issues from the moment a button is pressed. The old GC Wavebird wireless controller was notorious for people complaining about lag. The button layout and feel will be familiar to anyone who ever used a GC controller. This controller has the home, +/-, and camera capture button; you do not need to have another controller connected to pause, or navigate with the +/- buttons. The original GC controller only has a pause/start button, so if you purchased a dongle, you would probably still need to have another controller connected to navigate the menus of some games.

Cons: This controller looks exactly like an old GC controller, but it doesn't quite have the same weight (even with the 2 AA batteries). The buttons don't quite feel as well made as the original GC controller, they sort of feel a little clunky; but, they are responsive, and that's what really matters here. It uses 2 AA Batteries! Why in the world isn't it exactly like the pro controller and just have a rechargeable Li-Ion battery like all of the other Switch controllers? I mean I guess it's cool that in 10 years that you can just pop a new set of AA, and there will be no degradation in play time.... but no one wants to sit on a pile of AA batteries (hopefully rechargeable). That being said, I haven't needed to change the battery yet; this controllers battery life seems to be better than the rechargeable pro controller.

I would have given the controller 5 stars if the buttons weren't clunky feeling.

I almost did not purchase this due to the reviews but am so thankful I gave it a try.

I have only used this with super smash bros. Ultimate, thus my review is based on that game. I am able to play at an elite smash level with this control and have not noticed any connection, lag, or other issues that change gameplay.

I had been playing smash bros ultimate, and was in the market for a new gamecube style controller. I almost did not purchase this after reading some of the nagitive reviews. I decided to buy it and if the nagitive was true, at least I could have an extra control for a friend. Let me tell you, I love this control. I play competitively with friends and online with this, and it performs well.

I have read reviews that complain about a few things I have not seen in this controller. Some nagitive reviews talked about controller lag? I have not noticed any lag whatsoever with this. Some said it was cheap and rattled as if it had broken parts in it? The connection button on the top sits loose and rattles, but that's it.

The actually cons:
-shoulder buttons are not analog. (Personally doesn't matter to me)

-uses conventional AA batteries.

The 4 stars is due to the 2 cons listed above. Even with those, I would recommend this control to anyone who likes the gamecube style controls.
