I waited for a month doing extensive research before jumping on to buying a new laptop! I do Photo Editing, Graphics Design, Coding, and Music. Software used are mostly all Adobe, Ableton Live and Heavy coding with a lot of npm installation. Well, after thorough research, It came down to Speed, Compact, Comfort, Ease of Use in terms of what I was looking at. This new Laptop 2 check all of it including elegant and luxury design and buying this was the best decision ever made on a laptop purchase. The keyboard is so comfortable as to a level of taking my typing speed up a few notches, very clean and loudspeaker, sleek design, super slim, amazing screen and the touchscreen makes a huge difference when it comes to designing, navigating or using any kind of creative software, the craftsmanship on a laptop like never seen before and not to mention Matte Black is pure sexy! Yes, I bought Matte Black which I couldn't find on Amazon so leaving a review here as the specs are the same. To anyone wondering, I installed Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Rush, Xd, Lightroom and used all of them. Did some run on regular use cases including designing, editing, saving and exporting and run blazingly fast in all of the apps. I still can't believe this is packed with this much speed in such a slim design just next level !! Highly Recommend!
The Surface Laptop 2 is one of the best laptops I’ve seen on the market. Spec wise it’s a higher end laptop similar to the MacBook Pro lineups, but beyond that the Surface seemed like the better buy for a couple of reasons.
PROS:
- Beautiful touchscreen display: This stands out when comparing it to the MacBook Pro. The display between the Mac and the Surface is very similar but touch capability makes it easier than being limited to the touchpad only. I have to say my hand tends to stay on the touchpad anyways but the option of swiping or tapping the screen can make certain tasks easier to do. The laptop has decent brightness if you are working outdoors, although like pretty much any laptop you shouldn’t be working on it in direct sunlight for the best results.
- Amazing performance: I personally haven’t compared the Surface Laptop 2 side by side to the MacBook Pro to get a decent comparison but the Surface definitely gets the job done. Whether I’m video editing or browsing the web the Surface runs all of these programs smoothly. With at least 8GB of ram you can run several tasks at once without any delay, it stood up to just about everything I threw at it. As long as you’re not hardcore gaming on it the laptop runs smoothly
- Amazing design: The design has stayed the same from last years model. The metal design on the outside of the laptop gives it a very smooth finish and premium feel. The laptop also has the alcantara fabric around the touchpad and keyboard which makes typing on the laptop easier on your wrists. Along with the design the laptop is fairly light and easy to carry around without too much effort.
NEUTRAL:
- Battery life: The battery life is decent on the laptop. With the high end processor and display it makes sense why the battery doesn’t meet up to some people’s expectations. I can get through a solid 6 - 7 hours of web browsing and occasional videos on a single charge. The charging cable for the laptop is compact so bringing it along shouldn’t be a problem.
CONS
Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C: Despite the features on this laptop it lacks Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C ports. Although it’s basically an upgrade from last years model it would have been nice if they implemented both of these in the laptop, but personally it isn’t a deal breaker.
Windows 10 Home: This laptop comes with Windows 10 Home, not the Pro version. This isn’t any issue for me as much since I don’t use any of the extra features the pro version provides. But BEWARE, this comes with Windows 10 Home.
OVERALL:
This laptop should suite most people in their day to day tasks. The performance should meet or exceed your expectations if you have a laptop older than 4 years so if you’re looking for an upgrade this is definitely worth the buy. Keep an eye out for sales on the Surface Laptop 2 to get a even better deal for an amazing laptop!
To be honest I am not a Mac fan but I am forced to use one at work at times. I don't like the OS but but the hardware has been superior to anything else I have used if you are willing to pay the higher prices. That is until I tried the Surface laptop 2. The hardware on this laptop is every bit as good as what is on a Mac if not better and you also get to use Windows and the thousands of software programs that also run on it.
The screen on this laptop is just amazing. It renders 4K video flawlessly without stuttering at all. I have to say this is the best screen I have seen on any laptop period. I'm not a heavy gamer but I've ran photo editing software and other programs that my other laptop struggles with. The Surface so far has run everything that I've thrown at it without issue. It comes with the new I 5 processor that is supposed to have fifty percent more power than last years chip and from what I've seen so far I believe it. It out performs my older PC with an I 7 processor. Battery life is excellent also. With light use I am going on four days without charging and still have 50% battery remaining. With heavy use it will get me through 8 to 12 hours before I have to charge. I haven't had it long enough to get a firm number but it will get you through a workday on single charge without a problem.
With all that said nothing is perfect. It's not a deal breaker but I just don't understand why Microsoft felt the need to only include one USB A 3.0 port. I can understand their reasoning for not including a USB C but not having at least 2 USB 3.0 ports limits external device hookup unless you plug in a hub of some sort. Of course Microsoft sells a hub specifically for this laptop so that might have been the idea behind it.
I don't know if I can find enough positive things to say about this laptop. Yes, I know that it does not have any type C USB ports let alone a single Thunderbolt 3 port, but this laptop is really the fastest, best looking, and most functional piece of hardware I've owned. Aside from my $3,000 gaming PC that I built myself, this is the fastest machine in the house. Again, it lacks in I/O, but I haven't had a need so far to plug anything into it. I bought the Surface Arc Mouse thinking that I would use it and I have only used it for a few minutes here and there. The track pad is so intuitive, accurate and responsive that I really just don't need a mouse when I use this laptop. The keyboard is AMAZING. I mainly use this for work, and I must say I have not had a more comfortable all day typing experience on ANY laptop. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who needs a lightning fast machine for work/school that can last all day under load with a killer battery, and still look amazing while doing it. I've already gotten several compliments on the look of the machine from my colleagues. Well done, Microsoft. Well done.
I searched for a laptop for school for several weeks, combing through hundreds of reviews and types. I decided on this one based on overall price point and reviews. Overall, this is an awesome laptop. It charges really fast and the battery life is pretty good. I love that it starts right up and recognizes your face as soon as you open it. It is durable and super fast. I use it mainly for taking exams, Microsoft office, and other things for school. I love the draw feature on it especially for lectures. You don’t really need the stylus pen. Overall, I have been pleased with this laptop and would definitely recommend it especially for the price point. It is super quiet and light weight as well!

Bought for my wife who is in nursing school. It’s fast and does everything she needs. It’s light weight so she can carry it around with her books all day. The price was cheaper than Best Buy and was delivered very fast.
I purchased this laptop to do a variety of tasks, including writing posts for blogs, as well as some design work in Illustrator and Photoshop. Typing on the keyboard is nice, nice level of noise and a pleasant amount of travel. I love the feel of the Alcantara fabric. It does make me cautious that my hands are clean since I'm unsure how well it'd hold up if I'm harsh to it. The square-ish screen dimensions of the Surface gives you a lot more screen space, but if you notice motion blur on monitors be cautious, the panel in this seems to have a slow response of some kind. Trackpad is solid, touchscreen is as well, and the speakers sound good. Fan noise is near non-existent unless you stress the machine, which if far enough can make it sound like a jet. Wish the charger was a block on the wall like you find with Apple machines of the Lenovo I owned previously, the portion between wall and power brick should be longer because it isn't long enough. All around a great machine, just short of perfect, but an absolute buy.
I gave this a four out of five just due to a lazy thing that Microsoft could easily fix. The power cord for this laptop is way shorter than it should be... like prohibitively short. The cord from the wall to the brick makes it hang in the air and tugs the charger out constantly. I am currently looking into where to buy an extension for this. That is only an extra $10-$15 and isn't that big of a deal... but if you are dropping $900+ dollars on a laptop, should you really have to do that?
My other complaint is the lack of USB-C ports. I knew this going into buying the laptop, so I am not going to complain about it too much. But I purchased my Spectre three years ago and it had two USB-C ports at the same price point... it is just really odd Microsoft hasn't added at least one yet.
Besides that the laptop is amazing. I went from a Macbook, to an HP Spectre and now to this. I will say that I think the Surface Laptop is my favorite of the bunch. I wasn't sure I'd like the cloth like fabric around the keyboard, but it is great. It looks good, runs smooth and has an amazing screen. The speakers on this laptop are also tremendous. I'll definitely be sticking with the Surface Laptop line, especially if they fix the two issues I listed above!
Considering price... this laptop beats the MacBook Air. Light, this, great material and style.
This burgundy color is just as beautiful in person as it is online. Microsoft’s continued perfect shot at making hardware. I love the keyboard and precision engineering that went into making this pc.
