Linksys LRT214 Gigabit VPN Router

Linksys LRT214 Gigabit VPN Router

Linksys packs a lot of features into this router. IPv4, IPv6, Firewall, Routing protocols, VPNs, and much more. It's quite an impressive little box. In my case, I used it to divide one network into two and the LRT214 gets the job done without a hassle. The web-interface feels a bit laggy but, performance-wise, the LRT214 delivers the goods. It's missing some higher-end features like support for external authentication (stuff like OpenLDAP, TACACS+, etc.), and only supports RIPv1,v2, and RIPng but given the price of this router, that's probably expected. Yet, this router does support sending logs to a remote server.

The separate DMZ port is nice and allows for some interesting networking fun.

All in all, given the cost of the LRT214 and its target market, it's a winner, in my opinion. Even with the slow web interface, it's a good, low-cost router for home and even some small business use.

UPDATE: 1/17/2018
Had an issue with the router locking up and quit passing traffic every few days. Traced the problem to firewall logging. This router doesn't appear to have any form of log rotation so when the router log fills up, bad things happen. Be mindful of that when creating firewall rules. You might have to disable logging of certain firewall events.

After I disabled logging of denied packets, the router stayed online and performed as expected.

One of the very few router on the market to implement ipv6, kudos Linksys.
I just set it up few hours ago, and worked like a charm, few setting to tweak and that was it.
I didn't test properly on the local network but Internet speed are about 260 Mbps, latency is 2-3 ms with CAT 6 cable.
UI is very responsive. I kept my AirPort express 802.11ac as bridge to handle the WiFi, very happy about the setup!

I had the Linksys LRT224 VPN router from early 2014 to 12/23/2018 router stopped working on 12/23/2018. During these four years I had great service and will buy another Linksys LRT224 VPN router should be delivered on 12/29/2018 with a four-year protection plan. With an additional Linksys LRT224 VPN router as a backup. Just installed new router and later found out that the power supply fried. Used the new Linksys power supply and my out router works great and I also have extra power supplies that will work with my new and old Linksys LRT224 VPN router. New Linksys LRT224 VPN router will be used as a backup. I have an Arris SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem with Comcast Internet service. I use the Arris SB8200 cable modem with dual WAN output to the Linksys LRT224 dual WAN input. Comcast in this area is only offering DOCSIS 3.0 service. My network is a peer to peer LAN network but will be getting a WINS server soon. Accessing PPTP VPN using LAN IP addresses all IP addresses are charted to access information. With the WINS server I will see server Icon names instead of IP addresses. WINS server not needed for gateway to gateway VPN connections. Improvements that are needed for IPV6. Using PPTP VPN from my laptop to my VPN server to my other home servers IPV6 packets will not pass through the VPN tunnel just IPV4 packets. Only IPV4 IP addresses can be used to create a VPN tunnel using PPTP or gateway to gateway networks. My buddies are telling me that Gateway to Gateway VPN passes IPV6 packets. Next generation Linksys LRT224 VPN routers should have 10 gigabit ethernet WAN and LAN ports and one USB 3.2 WAN port for 5G. Must be able to create VPN networks using IPV6 addresses and pass IPV6 packets NAT bandwidth and IPV6 bandwidth should have 10 gigabits upstream and 10 gigabits downstream. VPN gateway to gateway bandwidth should have 2 gigabits upstream and 2 gigabits downstream. VPN PPTP bandwidth should have 200 megabits upstream and 200 megabits downstream. Comcast and other cable companies will be competing for customers against cellular operators using 5G such as AT&T, Sprint, Verizon soon for internet services. Cable companies and land line phone companies will no choice but to use FTTH (fiber to the home) and 5G technologies rather than DOCSIS 4.0. Comcast and other cable companies plus land line phone companies may offer discounts if the cable and land line phone companies can put 5G transceivers on customers roofs connected to their cable and land line phone company’s media converters. With 5G coming the difference between cable and land line phone companies will blur greatly.

I purchased a LRT214 a little over 30 days ago. It has now been up for 34 days with no issues. I purchased it mainly because hackers kept attacking my servers through the RDP port. I had used a Cisco router for VPN access but they dropped support of the client. The basic features of the LRT214 were easy to setup. Setting up the OPenVPN client and server could not have been easier. Best of all, the combination of password and certificate authentication is offered and just a part of the setup. The VPN access is as good as RDP but secure.

Bought this to replace a pair of cisco rv130 and rv180 routers that were frankly not up to the challenge of supporting the network load of an office with 12 people. Chose this based the max throughput and max connections in conjunction with the load sharing ability. Was not disappointed. No more network issues.

Description

The Linksys LRT series integrates Gigabit firewall, site-to-site VPN, and various remote access VPN technologies into a single box. With two models to choose from, Linksys Gigabit VPN Routers provide secure and reliable network service for employees whether they're at the office or on the road.

Great solid device, works better than an all-in-one router/Wi-Fi device. Able to hit ISP speed inside and outside on network. Good VPN features and website filtering works well and has been stable for 2 weeks since I installed it. I then changed my previous Asus router to AP mode and use it for just Wi-Fi access, with Ethernet routing off-loading it now has better Wi-Fi throughput. We work from home and stability and performance is very important, both our VPN throughput has improved.

So far so good. I used this to replace a cheap wireless router we were using only to obtain a static IP to access our in house server from the web. The old router died and this has taken over. I like how it is a simple and straightforward device. It feels very well made and has an all metal enclosure. Our network has probably been the most stable since I can remember or at least that's how this has made me feel. I'm hoping this just lasts longer than all my other netgear junk which we have constantly had to replace what seems like every year.

I have this LRT214 router and also have the AC1750, and AC1200 business access point and was able to quickly create a VPN to my office, then use the AC1750's for AP and bridge to send internet to my shop. Set up was FAST and easy, and support was awesome. I found NO firmware issues that seem to plague other brands. If I shut off my internet by disconnecting the cable, then reconnect, the VPN comes RIGHT back. I have had such problems with other brands, I am switching all my equipment to Linksys... Support is getting SOOOO disrespectful with other brands, I have just had it. And the firmware mistakes with competitors is so horrible that I think a grade schooler did the programming. I believe I had American support from Linksys, but I cannot verify this. Either way, support was awesome.

Dual WAN failover works great. I have Utopia on WAN1 and Xfinity on WAN2. I do wish it had policy based routing where I could just have certain IPs locked into using one WAN or the other. Right now all traffic goes over one of the links unless you load balance where it alternates traffic across both WAN interfaces.

I got this to provide a secure connection *into* my home network without having to port-forward everything through an SSH tunnel. It was fairly easy to set up behind my main router as a VPN appliance (no other devices are connected to it) and now I can access my home computers and SAN from anywhere.

I do pay for the no-ip service so I don't have to worry about having a dynamic IP address.
