I just bought 2 of these right here on Amazon. They are the 3TB for $91.99 each this Dec. 2016.
So far I am very pleased. Let's get to some stuff other reviews have not covered yet.
Boot consumption: 0.50A @ 5.08v
Idle consumption: 0.22A @ 5.06v
Sleep consumption: 0.03A @ 5.06v (a sweet feature to save the life of the drive, no noticeable wake-up for my backup use)
Write consumption: 0.48A @ 5.01v Windows10 says 38 MB/s average. (USB3.0)
Read consumption: 0.22A @ 5.06v Windows10 says 1.61GB/s average. (USB3.0)
If you like the extra effort on this review, let me know. Thanks.
PERFECT!
I was looking for a MAC time machine backup drive and noticed the external drives labeled as MAC were $10 - $15 more. I then read the Q&A on this drive and someone gave the most perfect instructions:
"right out of the box it's not Mac ready, but the solution is real easy. You go to Utilities and open up Disk Utility. With the drive plugged in, select it and go to the Erase tab and there should be a drop down menu with Format. Select Mac OS and click erase and after that's done, the drive should be formatted for Mac and you can save to your heart's content."
I might only add where to find Disk Utility in case you didn't know ... in finder go to the applications folder and in that folder is utilities and in that folder is disk utility.
I did just as the person in Q&A said and the second it was done reformatting a box came up asking if I wanted to use this drive as a time machine backup drive. I said yes, and within 107 seconds I was done. Color me impressed!
We got the 1tb drive because we have a 1tb 21.5" iMac from Nov 2013.
I hope this helps someone. I will update this review later as to longevity of the drive.
UPDATE: May 6, 2018
7 months later and this little backup drive does what it should do. We have never needed to utilize the files it stores, but it is nice to know the files are there. I periodically check to make sure my Mac is recording on this drive and it functions perfectly as a time machine drive.
This has worked out perfectly for me! I have a laptop with an awfully lot of pictures on it. Unfortunately some seem to be duplicates and there are so many different folders and pictures it would be very hard to organize them all and remove duplicates. While my laptop is running fine, it is getting older and will have to be replaced sometime. I didn't want to lose all my pictures so I have been trying to save them on memory sticks. The transfer rate was very slow with memory sticks. When I received this hard drive, I turned off my computer completely, plugged in the hard drive, and then started up the computer. The computer accepted the hard drive and loaded all the drivers very quickly. I started copying my picture files to the external drive and couldn't believe how fast the transfer rate was. I now have all my photos and some video clips on this external hard drive. Perhaps in the future I will be able to organize them better and eliminate any duplicates but, for now, everything is safe on my new external hard drive. I highly recommend this hard drive for everyone.
I bought this drive because it had such high ratings, even though it’s formatted for PC and I needed it for a MacBook Pro - and all of the external drives that are already formatted for Macs are more expensive. As soon as I connected it to my MacBook, Time Machine automatically launched and asked if I wanted to use the Canvio for backups and I said yes. It erased and reformatted the drive and then started the backup. Couldn’t be any easier! This drive works beautifully and is small and lightweight. I was so impressed with it that I bought another one - for my iMac. If you need a good external drive for your Mac, you can’t go wrong with this one!
I take A LOT of pictures. I had concerns that with my computer being a few years old already that some day I would try to turn it on and it wouldn't start. So, I bought this to use as a back up. I've had this for about a week and already filled up over 100GB (that's with every picture, file and document that is on my computer). I still have a little over 800GB left! After having it plunged into your computer and it not being in use for a certain amount of time, it will shut off. Which I love because if it's not being used, I would rather it be off. With me taking as many pictures as I do, this may have been the best money I have spent..other than my camera of course! :) It comes with the cord to connect it to your computer as well.

Description
Toshiba HDTB410XK3AA Canvio Basics 1TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0, Black
I purchased this purely for my Xbox One. It works perfectly and stores all my games nicely. Great Value.
Bought this to expand the memory on my PS4 and its great. World of advice, it may say it’s not compatible the first time you try to format it, just leave it plugged and reboot the console
Ordered this device and a Silicon Power 5TB portable USB drive with intent to use them for external storage and transfer of media with my ThinkPad Xenon running Ubuntu 16 and Synology DS418play. The Toshiba works perfectly - nothing but problems with the Silicon Power drive. Ordered a SECOND Toshiba. Drive-to-drive copies of 600GB @ close to 100MB/sec (NTFS->BTRFS). Been moving around 30GB Blu-Ray files for a week without a single hic-cup.
Just for grins I tried one more time with the Silicon Power drive before sending it back. No more than 6GB before any copy stalls and I have to unplug the drive by hand. More than half the time its impossible to even unmount the drive and about 1/3 of the time the laptop won't soft reboot. This appears to be a Seagate/Linux issue - mostly Seagate. I have three other Seagate USB 2/3 2.5" drives that exhibit the same behavior.
If you're looking for a high capacity, compact solution to connect to a Linux derivative, while the Silicon Power drives look appealing, I strongly suggest sticking with the Toshiba. Both the Basics and Connect II seem to work perfectly.
The only thing I'm not terribly impressed with is the receptacle on the drive and the supplied USB cable. The receptacle feels a bit delicate and IMHO the cable is a bit short and doesn't seem to be the best quality. The cables are thin and short which may be great if you have a desk or table but make things real dicey if you're trying to work with a laptop on your lap. I use better made - longer - Y cables instead of the supplied cable out of habit, but I did test the supplied cables and didn't seem to have any issues.
Notes:
All drives were tested on Ubuntu 16.10 fully patched with three different file systems - Ext4, Btrfs and NTFS, and Windows 7 (fully patched). Laptop uses internal SSDs running Ext4. Tests were internal to external, external to external and external to internal. Disks were connected to laptop USB3 ports and an ANKER, external 7-port hub running into the ThinkPad dock. Drives were re-partitioned and re-formated using both Linux and Windows.
NTFS formating on external drives allows for portability between MS and Linux, but obviously externals formated with Ext?, Btrfs, etc. (NOT NTFS) yields the best performance.
I bought this for my 500 GB xbox one when I ran out of space. Well actually, I had been out of space for about 2 years and it was awful having to delete a game and download another when I wanted to play something I didn't have room for. I was about the buy another game, but then realized I'd have to delete ANOTHER game if I wanted a new one, and that was my tipping point. I'd been researching the best bang for your buck when it comes to external hard drives for a while, but it just so happened that the one day that I decided to check the Amazon Deals of the Day, Toshiba was having an AWESOME sale on this thing, and i couldn't pass up such a deal. Once it arrived, right on time, it was in simple packaging, and I just opened it up, plugged it into my xbox, let it format the drive, and then downloaded every game I own. It's the greatest feeling not having to worry about space when I want a new game. 10/10 experience, could not have asked for a better one.
I don't often five stars to a product but this one deserves it.
It has been two years since I bought it and it is still going strong in spite of the fact I have dropped it at least three times.
The last time I dropped it was this week onto a hardwood floor and thought it was a goner but it is still working.
This drive has been well worth the price which is not expensive at all.
It does not get hot and I think it is quiet but deafness prevents me from hearing much.
I'd recommend this drive if you need more storage space.
