I purchased this Sofia + Sam Oversized Memory Foam Lap Desk after first receiving the LapGear Deluxe Laptop LapDesk 91485 Silver Carbon for Christmas. The Sofia + Sam is a better price, better build quality and better design.
As a rule, I prefer the type of lap desks that have the microbead filler because that can be molded to conform to your lap a bit more comfortably than any type of foam bottom, including memory foam. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate a suitable replacement for my standard-size microbead-filled laptop desk, so I purchased this Sofia + Sam as the next best option. Upon receipt the box just struck me as too thin and, indeed, the memory foam cushion is not quite as thick on the bottom as I had hoped. However, the woodgrain makes for a nicer appearance. whereas the wrist-rest serves as a lip to keep my MacBook from sliding forward while tilted.
My reason for selecting this lap desk is to accommodate a mouse to the side of my laptop. I prefer to center my MacBook on the surface of the desk so there's not quite as much room as there would be otherwise. Still, there's just enough space to accommodate a compact mouse. Unlike the competing product, which consists of two parallel cushions with a gap running down the center on the underside, the bottom of this cushion is solid (unbroken) so it will accommodate shorter leg lengths. (The problem with the competing model is that my knee, while seated, would hit the center of the underside where there was no cushion, causing the whole thing to tilt toward the floor — an immediate deal-breaker as I am relatively short.)
At first I debated whether to order the Sofia + Sam lap desk with the tablet nook and/or the USB light but I'm glad I stuck with the basic version because, once my 15" MacBook Pro is placed behind the wrist rest it nearly abuts the back of the lap desk with only ~3/4 inch to spare. Had I ordered the deluxe model with the cutout for the tablet, it potentially could have made for an uneven surface while using my MacBook. Ditto for the USB light. With my mousepad in place, there isn't much room to spare for another pass-through for a light, cords or similar. And so, in summary, the basic model serves my purpose very well. These lap desks are getting hard to find at local office stores and the like, so I am glad to have found a solution here on Amazon. Now the only thing that remains to be seen is how long it will hold up.
The absolute best investment I've made for doing my school work. Perfect size, comfortable wrist pad, and it's not heavy. It fits my 13" MacBook Air & a mousepad with ease. The back slot can hold my iPhone as well.
This is the best thing like it I have tried, and I've tried a bunch of them. I recently also got the main competitor, which is LapGear XL Laptop LapDesk. This device by Sofia + Sam is much superior. Here's the features that I like about it.
1) The wrist pad is crucial for keeping computer or mouse from sliding off into your lap unless you don't work at any angle at all. I would not bother with any type of these lap desks that do not have a wrist rest. Not for the rest part but for keeping stuff on it, if nothing else. A problem with the LapGear model in comparison is that, on it, the wrist rest is huge and sticks up high and is hard plastic with clothe over it. For this Sofia + Sam model, the wrist rest is a more normal size, soft, nicely covered with soft cloth, etc. It's just right for me.
2) This works great with my huge ThinkPad T560 as well as with my 13in MacBook Pro. With the former, there is not really room for a mouse. With the latter, there is plenty of room for a mouse.
3) I don't know why or how, but the surface of the wood here (or vinyl covered wood that looks pretty good) is one my MacBook does NOT slip on. With every other thing like this I have my MacBooks little rubber feet slip as if they were not rubber at all. But it stays put on this surface, even at quite an angle. That means I can actually use the wrist rest at whatever distance from it that I prefer rather than merely as a needed device to hold my stuff from sliding off.
4) The padding for lap is very comfortable and NOT fricken hugely fat like most others. It raises your computer on your lap but it's not way higher than your lap (about 3 inches, I'd say). That seems just right for it to be actually usable.
5) It seems very well made to me.
My 17 inch laptop and mouse fit great, the unit is well made and comfortable. It also matched my recliner as you can see in photo. Extremely satisfied with this well made product, packaging & delivery.
Very nicely made. Pocket to store light in if not in use or in the way. Even with my 17 inch laptop there would be room on the side for a mouse. I use touchpad and do not know how well the surface would work, but there is room there. The trim ring around the tablet opening protrudes above the main surface about 1/16 of an inch. Using my larger laptop is not an issue because it sits easily without interference. For use as a desk I think it would also be ideal. My wife has tried it and now wants one of her own so we both sit in our easy chairs and work together.

Description
The Sofia + Sam Oversized Lap Desk is the ultimate portable workspace. Comfortably use your large laptop computer with a mouse from a chair, sofa, or even in bed. Works great for crafts and studying. The lap desk has a luxurious cushion of furniture grade memory foam for total comfort and support.
First I purchased the basic version of this laptop and had to surrender it to my wife who loves it for reading and writing in her swivel rocker by the garden window. As often as I tried to borrow it back it disappeared again, so I ordered the deluxe version with the wrist rest and LED light for myself. It is just wide enough to work with my Logitech K360 wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. It would also work with a 15" laptop and separate mouse. The 17" laptop would be too wide for separate mouse.
The LED light is great for working on my "honey do" list, reading and lighting up the keyboard. Comfortable on the lap and warm with the foam under-cushion. No worries about little foam pellets leaking out like another maker's laptop desk did. I'd have bought the version with the slot for a tablet except my Lenovo is about 1/8" wider than the published width of the slot. The bluetooth keyboard I use with the tablet has a slot any way.
Very happy with the purchases of these lapdesks. Well made, and attractive. Time will tell whether I am forced to down grade to the basic laptop by a certain light-fingered wife of mine. ;^)
I thought it might do the job, but i didn't know I would love this lap desk the way I do. It's so much more comfortable to use than any other lap desk I've used -- and I've had quite a few. It's comfortable on my lap, easy on my wrists. It's plenty big enough for my oversized 15-6 Alienware laptop AND a logitech wireless mouse. It is a pleasure to have a product exceed expectations. It's rare enough. I most highly recommend it.
Very attractive piece. I like the foam bottom as HDX 8.9" rest, and the light is sufficient for reading (but maybe not for a long time). My main purpose was to have the light available during our electrical outages as I use a writing pad for notes while I read.
I'm not sure what the top device slot is for. In my case, I can't reach the device well enough to play games - or even read well. But, using the foam bottom as a device rest makes my head turn down too low, making it uncomfortable to work for any length of time. However, since I use this in bed, I just place a King-size pillow underneath this (which raises it and takes some of the weight off since it is a little heavy). Still, I need to use the Oragami holder placed at the base to make the device positioning the right angle for me. All in all, it serves my purpose and is well made. However, WalMart carries this same item for $20 less (since I paid $45 here).
After searching for days for a lap desk that met my needs, I decided on this Sofia+Sam oversized standard model. I wanted a solid foam cushion on the bottom, not one full of those tiny foam beads that compress rather quickly. I also wanted one large enough to accommodate my 15" Apple laptop, and my somewhat large tracker ball mouse. It took a good bit of time and some comparison shopping to finally narrow my choices to two. The other one of the two was strictly rectangular in shape, as opposed to this one with a different, more sculpted shape. At first I didn't think I'd want this shape, because it actually has a little less usable surface area for the computer and mouse. But, because this one has so many great reviews, and it shows up on each of the "Best Lap Desks of the year" lists I found online, I decided to go with this one. And, I'm glad I did. It's very comfortable in my lap, and has plenty of surface area for my computer and mouse. There is a slight slope downward from back to front, but not enough to send my mouse sliding off the desk when I don't have my hand on it. The surface material is very attractive with a wood finish, and doesn't appear to have a laminated faux wood surface that could eventually start to peel off, as I have read happening in reviews of some other brands. I ordered the standard model of this lap desk, not wanting the light or the wrist rests, which appear to take up usable space on the desk top, so I opted out of anything but the standard version.
Though the desk is just a little heavier than I thought it would be, I still give it 5 stars for the appearance, style, comfort in use, and apparent durability. It was also delivered quickly after I ordered it, and comes with a 30 day money back guarantee, no questions asked.
Love my Lap Desk so far. I like to sit in my lounge chair in front of the TV so I wanted a lap desk that is large enough to fit my mouse. I can even fit my mouse pad with wrist rest but I didn't want to include it in the photograph so you can see how much room there is on the side of the laptop. Works perfectly! My laptop is about 16 inches.
