NONE SUCH classic original MINCEMEAT CONDENSED, 9 OZ pack of 2

NONE SUCH classic original MINCEMEAT CONDENSED, 9 OZ pack of 2

BUY THE BOX! This stuff is just so darned good ... a classic old English heavenly spiced apple/raisin pie filling prized at Christmas time (well, in it's oldest version it was made with minced venison ... hence the name, mincemeat, but this is meatless). My family enjoys it at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. The boxed mincemeat far surpasses the mincemeat found in jars. Reconstituting is easy ... break-up mincemeat into bowl, pour boiled water over it, wait to reconstitute while house fills with the most incredible spicy aroma. Next, stand over mincemeat armed with wooden bat to keep family from eating from bowl before you get it into pieshell. Also try the cookie recipe found on the package or, for another old fashioned treat, make mincemeat hermits if you like bar cookies. Save a piece of pie to eat while watching Dicken's "A Christmas Carol". Merry Christmas and God Bless us everyone!

I love this stuff and have had pies made with it all my life. But, I could have gotten it MUCH cheaper (four bucks a box and five for shipping) at the none such site. I for got to check before I clicked. I hate when this happens!

Hailing from the old country (Canada), my father is a big fan of mincemeat pie. Just the very name of it used to conjure up images of a huge boar being slowly roasted over a huge fire and then being carved into tiny pieces to place into a pie (maybe together four and twenty blackbirds, who knows?). What I do know is that my father loves it, and mincemeat is getting harder and harder to find in the stores. Where else do I go when I cant find something in the grocery store but Amazon - of course. I ordered it, it arrived on time, and I baked tow lovely pies. My father was a very happy man.

I only gave the product 4 stars because of the price. Shortly after I went to all this trouble I happened to find the very same product in Wegmans for a much lower cost. Nonetheless - I was happy I ordered it and made the pie - saving some wild boar and perhaps a few blackbirds from an untimely death.

Great product but exactly 200% higher than at the Borden website, which now owns the Nonesuch brand. Never forget that Amazon is to be used for CONVENIENCE, NOT PRICE.

That said, I used this product to make a micemeat streusel from the BBC website. I reconstituted it as directed but substituted a quarter cup of brandy for a quarter cup of the water, to avoid a gloppy texture. I also added a half of a finely diced apple, a handful of dried cranberries, and 3 oz toasted black walnuts in a medium chop and the zest of one orange. It is a good “foundation” product, too heavy perhaps to use without some more extensive doctoring than the box recommends. It takes on many flavors well and has the ultimate Christmas fragrance and taste. 4 stars for the outrageous price, but shame on me for not checking first.

Mincemeat pie has been a staple in my Thanksgiving life since my youth. My mother made them and now my wife does.
Trips to the grocery store in the weeks before Thanksgiving searching for the mincemeat in a jar were not only failures but the clerks could offer no hope that the product would ever appear.
In desperation I went to the internet and purchased this product.
When the boxes came there was some skepticism on our parts that was magnified when we opened the boxes.
But following the directions, adding one cut up fresh apple and 1/4 cup of brandy it was a complete success.
The pie was deep and large so two boxes were necessary.
I actually like it better than the product in the jar.

Description

Borden None Such Condensed Mincemeat with apples and raisins, 9oz, pack of 2

It has been a long time since stores in my area carried the boxes of dried mincemeat. I can only find jars of mincemeat in the grocery stores for a short time around Thanksgiving, so I've been using the jars, but one jar doesn't really fill a pie. Two boxes is just right and, in my opinion, tastes better. So I'm thrilled to find a source for the boxed mincemeat. And I can buy them any time of the year!

Prefer this boxed concentrate to the jars because (1) it has sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and (2) you can add brandy to the liquid when rehydrating and it is so good! I added 1/2 cup brandy and 3/4 cup water instead of all water. I also added extra raisins to make it thicker, and one box rehydrated made a dozen small English-style mince pies (each another it the size of a large cookie).

I purchased the None Such mincemeat to make a birthday pie for my mom, who prefers pie over cake. I didn't know that there was any other form of mincemeat but that which comes in a jar. Mincemeat is impossible to find in a local grocery store at any time other than the holidays. Even at Amazon, the price for a jar off holiday time is ridiculously expensive. But I was pleased to find two packages of the condensed mincemeat for $10, a very good price, indeed. The reconstituted product tastes just like the product in the jar for less money and is available whenever I want it. the pie was delicious, and my mom enjoyed it as well.

This is the gold standard for those of us who still remember and enjoy mince pies. I bought two. Now down to just me who likes mince pies so I make them as hand pies now. This was always a Christmas tradition in eastern Canada.

This stuff works surprisingly well. As a Brit in the USA who was missing UK mincemeat at Christmas, I was a bit sceptical about 'condensed' mincemeat but following the instructions it revived really well and made a great batch of mince pies
