I bought this exclusively for railroad listening, and it works great. I live near several major rail yards, so proximity to the signals isn't an issue. As with things of this type, programming usually messes with my mind, but there are several great utube videos that make it easy. I programmed all 100 AAR freqs so no matter where I am, I can catch anything going on nearby. Battery life is just fine so far, as is the quality of the radio. I am very happy with this purchase!
Nice unit! Though, I am disappointed that it seems that everything these days is made of plastic.
I feel if this were to drop onto the floor, it would crack very easily.
We bought this because recently crime in our area has been on the rise, which is so sad being this neighborhood was very quiet. This actually alerted us when a break in was occurring in our neighborhood, and we were on the look out when we heard it come over the scanner.
What I like about this unit, is that it is very easy to set up, and instructions are included.
You will also receive a charging cord and this does take batteries so you can take it with you.
The buttons and screen light up when you press and hold the lower left button.
No two way communication with this one.
This arrived on time, and well protected.

I purchased this Uniden Bearcat Scanner in order to monitor Kansas City Southern and and Canadian National railroads in the Alexandria, Baton Rouge and New Orleans area as well as the Baton Rouge area NOAA Weather Radio frequency. The Uniden Bearcat Scanner works best with rechargeable NI-MH 2300 Mah batteries. The Scanner can also be powered by to Alkaline batteries but this type of doesn’t last long at all. After installing the two NI-MH 2300 Mah rechargeable batteries I haven’t had recharge yet. This Scanner has a built in sercuit, which charges the batteries when the Scanner is connected to your computer. The Scanner’s functions are straight forward and very easy to operate and understand. The Uniden Bearcat Scanner will also receive Fire/EMS and Louisiana Department of Corrections Statewide Scanner Frequency, meriner’s info frequency and area wide Ham frequency in our area as well as Baton Rouge Metropolitan airport Ryan Feild, but will not tune in police frequencies in this area as the police now use 800s Scanner frequencies for their added security.
Al in all this Scanner is great tool to have during hurricane season.
I love this scanner. I became the neighborhood captain and like to know what is going on around my area. I had an old scanner that worked great but had some issues with a beeping sound that interrupted the frequencies I was trying to listen to. I know Uniden makes great quality products so when I was looking for the new scanner I went straight for this brand. I am not disappointed.
This scanner is very easy to program with the free computer program or even manually. There are 300 spaces to hold frequencies in. I don't think I will ever need that many but its nice to have.
You can scan all the banks or just one.
I believe this is a great quality scanner and very useful for my needs.
quick frequency install via internet radio frequencies list for owners( 80 mile area.) antenna provided 5 inch is fine but i put it to my old analog scanner one foot long multi element (at peak of rooftop antenna )and got so much going on at s c a n mode. get one of these and you can quickly hear that police emergency vehicle transmitt clear speech going tothat location ( of your curosity.) offers options like 200" lock out channels" that made noise when scanning. buy two each 2300 mh aa batteries and listen for a couple of days current draw very low.these go for twice the cost elsewhere , see you tube reviews and how to plug and play . enter scanner bc75 xlt at search space.

Description
You can use the BC75XLT to monitor police and fire departments (including rescue and paramedics), NOAA weather transmissions, business/industrial radio, utilities, marine and amateur (ham radio) bands, and air band transmissions. Of course, scanning the 32,000 available frequencies can be time-consuming and frustrating, which is why Uniden added such functions as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local signals, and a comprehensive memory that holds up to 300 programmed channels. Receives conventional channels on the following frequencies: (25-54 MHz) (108 - 174 MHz) (406 - 512 MHz) To program the unit: Push Hold. This should bring up the first available channel, it should show B:1 Channel 1 and 000.000. To program your frequency in you will push in the Orange Function key and then let go. Immediately push in the E button and let go. You will then see a black box with PGM in it in the top right corner of screen, this means you are in program mode. Type in your frequency including the decimal point, when finished push in the E key and let go. This will enter in the frequency. To enter in another frequency turn the knob at the top right one click to the right and this will bring you to the next available channel. Follow step 5 and on. When finished entering in all of your frequencies you may hit scan. The scanner will now begin scanning your frequencies.
By far the best scanner I've purchased. I get excellent range and high quality receiving incoming information on it! I carry this everywhere being that I am an emt volunteer. Programming the channels was a bit of a pain and took a while but once you have the hang of it then it's a breeze. Great product for the price!
Great little scanner. Well built, fairly easy to use and program. Unfortunately most of the fire and police departments around me have converted to digital transmission and digital trunking, which leaves me very little to hear.
Excellent and affordable scanner. I use it to monitor local police/fire chatter, and it does a great job. The 'close call' feature is also fun and automatically hones in on any strong signals that you might not be actively looking for. You hear some fun/random stuff that way. Plenty of customization options available with multiple scanner banks and plenty of programmable channels. Buy with 2300mAh batteries so you can recharge the unit and take it around with you. Runs on AC power if connected via supplied USB cable, but you'll need to provide a wall adapter to power from a traditional outlet. Most people have plenty of these laying around from iPhones, etc. Only feature this unit does not have is the ability to save channels with text labels, to easily identify where the transmissions are coming from. For that feature you'll have to up a model to the slightly more expensive bearcat.
So far so good. I bought this to replace a Radio Shack Pro 89 which was about 20 years old. It finally gave in but that thing was awesome. I got this and was immediately was excited about the size of it. Very nice fit to the hand and has good solid sound. The only thing I've noticed that would be a downside is the battery life. It only take 2 AA's whereas my old one took 4 and would take a long time to run out. I've already been through 6 AA batteries and I've only had it for about a week. If you leave it on all day you should buy some rechargeable AA's. I'm currently doing that now so I don't have to buy so many AA's.
This scanner doesn't leave my house so I don't know what it would work like away from an outlet the battery only stays charged for about 6 hours so I keep it plugged in at all times I had to have a professional program it, it picks up a lot of ham operators those channels if you're not interested in that kind of stuff like I am not all had to be locked out but if you like that then you might like that part about it I did not
