When our son was about 4 months old, our doctor said that we could start trying to give him cereal. After reading up on the matter, we decided to go with oatmeal cereal as it seemed better/healthier than rice cereal. Our doctor said we could either put the cereal in his bottle or try to spoon feed him a cereal/breast milk mixture so he could start learning how to eat away from the bottle. Back then, he did not like the spoon, so we placed it in his bottle. He loved this stuff. Here's the nitty gritty:
Pros:
- It helps fill them up. Our little guy could not get full when he was on just breast milk. He would wake up every 2-3 hours during the night wanting to feed, which wore my poor wife out. When we put him on this cereal, he would span 4-5 hours between feedings, which was great, because we finally started getting a little sleep.
- It digests well. One of the biggest fears we had when starting our son on cereal was locking his bowels up. Of course, we started light, but this cereal didn't lock up his bowels at all. He digested it very well.
- You can mix it with puree. When our son got a little older, we started making our own puree for him to eat. Some of the puree, such as blueberries or strawberries, turned out way too runny. We would mix this oatmeal cereal in with the puree to thicken it up. Not only did it give the puree more body, making it easier to feed, but our son seemed to love it more than the blueberries/strawberries by themselves.
- It comes in a 6-pack. If you're like us, you'll burn through this stuff pretty quick. Given it comes in a 6-pack, you'll have supply for a little while before needing more. For us, this 6-pack lasted about 8-10 weeks.
Cons:
- The only problem we had with this cereal is that the pour spout was too large and flat. If you were in a hurry (ie. your child is screaming his lungs out at you) it is easy to make a mess by over pouring the cereal. Other than that, no complaints.
Overall, we highly recommend this cereal if your toddler is ready for it.
I don't know why the local stores don't carry this. Gerber Barley is the ONLY baby cereal I have found that does not constipate my babies (and I've had 11!!) They discontinued this for a while and I was very happy to see it back up here after my last baby was born. She has a more sensitive stomach than even my other babies; and so far she's doing great with this one too. I usually blend it with a little bit of baby apple and some of my pumped breastmilk to thin it out, and it's always a huge hit!
This new box (well, it's new as of a few years ago) is awesome too, no more flaky mess leaking out along the seams and getting on your counter. It works great. Plus the cereal itself doesn't clump at all like some of the organic brands. So although I would prefer something a bit more natural, you can't bypass the fact that it does work for babies who are getting constipated and need something a bit more substantial than just veggies or fruit.
I usually just use this and jarred baby food for a few months, and very quickly they are on "real" food that is mashable, I have typically found that they can pretty much eat whatever I am eating if I just mash it up for them. But this is great for that transition period.
Definitely recommend this for babies who get constipated by the other brands and varieties.
My son LOVES this stuff. I started giving it to him at 4 months and he just loved it from the beginning. He's now 6 months and still loves it. Definitely a good buy for a beginner eater.
The package arrived within two business days so that was nice. All the containers were clean and sealed. The box they came in was great because it works as storage as well. I probably won't need to purchase it again since my daughter will be pasted the cereal stage by the time we use them but I would recommend to friends.
Great stuff! My son eats this for breakfast every morning (currently 9 months old) and we will even use this for messy play by adding food coloring. I also add pureed food to this also to thicken up the foods and add flavor to the oatmeal. Endless possibilities!

This rice is just about $4.50 a container here in San Diego County. Ordering this one saves me about $5 and who doesnt love saving money. I used this for my daughter and now my son and wont use another brand. Cant wait for him to start other foods with this!
Our daughter has about 6oz of cereal every morning for the last 4 months. We are only 5 containers in. I don't even know how that's possible! Baby food is EXPENSIVE! This is totally worth the money.
I mix these with other flavors or just formula for my 5 month old boy, make sure to warm it up a bit so it isnt as chunky, but other than that, he loves these.
GI doctor recommended this to be added to our daughters formula since she was spitting up a ton. Almost every feed milk was coming out of her nose. 1 tsp:1oz of formula was all it took. Has helped significantly. My daughter seems to enjoy the taste.
Perfect! Comes with 6 individual containers of cereal. Mine didn’t weren’t damaged or open....no issues. Will order again.
