Acer 11.6in chromebook 4GB 16GB | C720-2844 (Renewed)

Like many on here when buying a laptop used I went through the reviews to make sure it is worth the hassle of buying a product cheaper. My item is used for school only and it’s a very powerful machine being able to view 4k youtube videos. Everything was going great until my product one random day decided to crash the chrome os making it un useable I restarted my laptop a few times and it went back to normal. This laptop even though I had this slight issue with it has been a purchase worth the price. If you decide to buy the laptop make sure it’s not for anything too important that will cause you to regret the purchase. It’s a little on the heavy side and it looks like a premium item.
Overall I do not regret the purchase, if you have doubts just purchase a warranty or pick a different used laptop.

My refurbished C720 Chromebook with 4GB RAM looks like new [oops, I did eventually notice a small ding on a rear corner; still acceptable]. I'm very pleased with it, as a web browser, and for writing. For me, it would not be powerful and flexible enough to be my only computer, but, it is really slick, for what it is. Performance is snappy, and the user experience is very good. You do have to learn some key combos to do navigation and such. There's a really nice keyboard map, accessed by pressing CTRL-ALT-?, ready for handy reference. The trackpad is very smooth.

Battery life is around the advertised 8+ hours. Since I use the unit every day, and the suspend mode is pretty easy on battery use, I haven't even turned it off... just closed the lid so that it is instant-on when I open up again. With my use patterns, I've been charging every other day.

I've heard the C720 described as ugly. I disagree. It may not be the height of elegance (yes, I was blown away when I first saw a Macbook Air), but, it is really decent. My only minor niggle is that the cover finish is a magnet for oily fingerprints.

I didn't fully love the Chromebook until I found the Caret app. It is a multi-document text and code editor that truly works offline. Be advised that you may hear that Google Docs and some other included Chromebook "apps" can be used offline. My own experience, and that of many, many reviewers in the Google Play store, is that those claims are often not true, or only half true, at least for now. For example Google Play Books has an option to make your book titles available offline. All that seems to do is cache 10 or 12 pages ahead, and, it is those pages you could read offline. Now, there IS an option to download books in PDF format. That works, but, you will no longer be reading with the smooth experience of the Books app. I hear you can work on a Google Docs file offline if you begin it online, or some such. I have not seen this work, in practice. None of this is criticism of Acer, but of Google and maybe some app developers. If you expect to do work offline, be prepared to find apps that will really let you do that.

I read about this laptop on a linux forum and was a bit skeptical. It took a little over a week to arrive, the 128G SSD I ordered got to me first. Played with ChromeOS for a few hours, it's come a long way since I tried it years ago, full featured for anyone looking for a simple online OS. I then proceeded to swap out the SSD, remove the firmware lock screw and install Ubuntu (there's a great version on www.distroshare.com). A few hours later I had a very speedy, full-function Ubuntu Linux laptop. Light weight and with about 7 hours of battery time, this thing really can't be beat for the price. I guess you're taking a chance with the refurb draw, but my unit was in brand new condition and everything functions fine. Note, you can not install Windows on here, any version, so don't bother trying, there are no drivers for the keyboard and mouse.

If you want a low-cost, light weight, long battery life Linux laptop for web, lightweight development, and general purpose, this is a great fit. I definitely recommend this laptop with this in mind.

PS. Check out Acer's web site for "Google Goodies" while you still have ChromeOS loaded. You may be able to get Google Drive space and other perks, but you MUST be in ChromeOS to claim them, not Linux.

This computer rocked my socks off. I found out it wasn’t compatible with the presentation app I use for work. I am a benefits coordinator for an insurance company. I was SOOOOOO disappointed. I wanted to keep it anyway but needed the cash to pay a bill before my check came in since I ended up having to buy a different way more expensive computer which by the way is not even close to being as awesome as this one is. so I had to send it back. Planning on probably buying one for my home office soon, also one for my kid and one for my friend too as her only need is to stream stuff. If you’re looking for a sleek, beautiful, simple to use computer that is for internet surfing or streaming this is perfect! I love the finish on the outside. So beautiful! And I love that it syncs up with all things google because google is my favorite platform.

Other recommendations were to get the 4GB version of the Acer C720 and not the 2GB version. That was great advice and I am very happy with this Chromebook so far. The 16GB SSD is good enough unless you really need to add lots of apps. For multimedia, if you don't want to store it in the cloud then just get a fast USB 3.0 memory stick, 32 or 64GB. The battery life is exceptional. The WiFi is very fast to connect and has excellent data speeds.

This item was refurbished and definitely like brand new. I would recommend Acer refurbished products to anyone. Also, even though it is refurbished, Google still gave me the free 100GB of storage for 2 years.

The only reason I don't give this product a 5 star is that some of the normal keys on the Chromebook keyboard are missing, such as Delete. You have to learn the muti-key replacements for these, such as CTRL-Backspace for Delete. That is annoying as there seems to be room in the form factor for these keys to exist. I also have had problems with the right mouse button functioning in some programs and I am not sure why. This may be a Chrome OS issue.

Now I read some of the reviews before I just went ahead and purchased this, but I figured it would have been so bad. I had bought this laptop because it was cheap and it was for a friend of mine who didn't have one. I took a week to set it up and see what was wrong with it. When I got it, it was easy to notice some faint scratch marks on the framework on the inside, but they were not too deep. Nothing seemed too wrong with it, then I found out the right part of the mouse wouldn't work (like the right-click button) but after a week I used how to work around that. Overall, I would say it's a good buy for just $97 (plus handling).

It arrived packaged very nicely. There were a few scratches here and there. As for the functionality of the product, it worked great with no problems. Its faster than my other laptop and the screen size and weight is good for everyday task in college. It's the size of a notebook.

I had no problems using the web versions of web version of windows applications which was a plus.

Honestly love my Chromebook way better than my windows laptop.

Based on other reviews I was worried about purchasing this but now that I have it I’m so glad I didn’t let those reviews influence my decision! It’s in great condition, connected to WiFi very quickly, it’s not slow & everything works. I haven’t been able to test the battery life just yet but regardless, for this price it’s a great purchase & gets the job done.

Looks like new.Zero problems. Good price.

I needed a portable computer to replace a 6 year old acer that was in disrepair but was unsure of getting a Chromebook. I considered an HP 11, Acer C720 and Toshiba. With each additional piece of information I visited my Best Buy to get a sense of how each one would provide the functionality. For me the deciding factor was the two-fold - 4gb ram and a relatively low price. I also had to feel comfortable with the fact that this is a refurbished laptop and I didn't know what impact that would have in the long run. It has been a month now and I am happy with the purchase. I cannot say for sure whether 4 gb allows me to do more but I can tell you that I have never worried about how many tabs I had open or doing anything else with the Chromebook. So it works for me.
