IZZO Golf Swami 5000 Golf GPS Rangefinder

IZZO Golf Swami 5000 Golf GPS Rangefinder

I love the basic functionality of this device. It's simple to use and usually quite easy to read, however, on my first round with it I noticed that about half way through its display dimmed. It was still fairly easy to read but not as good when operating at full brilliance. I downloaded the manual but found no information about how to correct the problem. It certainly can't be related to power consumption as after 18 holes it had lost very little battery power. The form factor for the device is well thought out and I especially love that it is not a touch screen device. I tend to be touch screen challenged so it's great to be able to handle the device without accidentally shifting it to some unwanted mode. I can't comment on its score keeping or shot measuring capabilities as I never use those functions. The only problem that I noted was that when it finally found satellite information it provides a list of courses in very small print and limited to the first few words of each title. That's a problem where I live as our two courses have long beginning titles that you have to get through to actual course names. So far, just selecting the first course on the list has worked. It did take a long time to find courses but according the manual that's normal the first time you use it. Overall, I love the simplicity of the device and its physical design.

I broke the screen the second time I used it (dropped my bag of clubs on it). I called to to check on cost to replace screen, and guess what they replaced the entire unit under warranty.
Great product, great service, great price what could anyone ask for

The GPS works as advertised. I used the 4000 for several years and this works as well with improvements. The 5000 changes holes while in the cart whereas the 4000 had to be on your person. This model shows distance to hazards. The 5000 has a much longer charge. It only uses about 40% for 18 holes. The older model barely lasted 18 holes.
As mentioned in other reviews, the magnetic cord for charging does fall off with any movement, but its not a big deal. Place it gently in a place it doesn't get disturbed and all is well.
Bottom line is I'm very happy with this model.

I wish there was a 3.5 rating but there isn't, so I rounded up. The size, accuracy and screen are all top notch. I had my SkyCaddie SG3.5 with me to compare the two, I consider the 3.5's accuracy to be spot on....the Swammi matched it exactly or within 1 yard. WISHLIST: 1) as others have mentioned, the magnetic charger instead of USB is just a bad idea. A charging cable that can only be replaced by the manufacturer is always a bad idea, not to mention that the slightest nudge knocks it off. So no luck with connecting it to my portable battery backup and tossing it into my golf bag. Which brings me to #2) with a USB cable Izzo could allow the Swammi 5000 to connect to the web for more enhanced tracking & statistics and linking with friends, etc. 3) there should be a way to easily input things like fairways hit, GIR and #of putts (see #2) 4) there needs to be a way to go back and correct scores in the score history. These are the things that I miss from my SkyCaddie, if Izzo can do those things with no annual or monthly fee...the Swammi would put SkyGolf out of business.

Great basic golf GPS. Clear easy to read screen giving all the information needed to play the correct club. Nothing fancy, but works darn good with impressive battery life, easily three full rounds on a single charge.

I absolutely love my Izzo Golf Swami 500 Golf GPS Rangefinder. However, after recharging it only a few times, it would no longer charge. I contacted support (they were EXCELLENT) and they identified the problem immediately. There are 4 pins on the magnetically attaching charge end of the cord which must contact the GPS unit itself. Only 2 of the 4 pins were fully extended, so full contact with the GPS unit was not achieved, and charging could not occur. Support immediately sent me a replacement charging cord. HOWEVER, I really dislike this type connection, since if the cord is accidentally bumped when magnetically attached to the GPS unit, it would stop charging. I much prefer the usual micro USB charging cord since it gives a much more secure connection. Plus, if you were to have an issue with any such charging cord, you could just grab and use another one of the dozen or so you probably have laying around. Sure would improve the product in my opinion.

Works well. It takes a minute or two to load once turned on. I turn mine on when pulling to first tee box. by the time we all tee off it is ready to go. I do not care for the swiveling carry clip, I think a strap or a stationary clip would be better. I removed mine as I found it a pain, now I just toss the device into a cup holder on the cart and it is works good there. Battery life is great. I have played as many as four 9 hole rounds over a couple of weeks time on one charge. I was skeptical of the magnetic charger, as long as you set it up and leave it alone to charge it works great, when I say leave it alone I mean don't touch or move it. On other battery devices I have had trouble with the charging sockets after a while I don't see this being an issue with this. I don't use the score keeper function, I use mine for distances to greens and hazards.

Used the Swami 5000 for a month mostly on 9 hole courses. All courses were located within 1-2 minutes. We'll find out how broad the course list is when I spend a week in Scotland next month! Battery life better than expected - at least 36 holes. Accuracy seems similar to partner's GPSs - within 3 yards. I use the shot length option a lot. Haven't used the scoring section because I take lots of notes on my card. I'd buy it again and recommend it although there are a few Issues:
1. Not crazy about the magnetic charging USB cable, but they're probably using it to maintain its water-resistance (which it is).
2. Once it's charging, if the power is shut off, the unit stays on. So you can't just leave it charging it in the car.
3. The belt clip attachment is in two parts and doesn't attach to anything very well. I may replace this.

Works great for what it was designed to do. Is simple to use and accurate. One button touch displays distance to hazard and distance to clear the hazard. Time display has been a little inconsistent, but a minor detail. Didn’t purchase it as a time piece! Charging works fine. Just turn it face down and set aside where it won’t get bumped. Very pleased with simplicity and accuracy. Bought it on sale and was a little concerned about some of the negative reviews I read, until I used it. No complaints.

Great product for the price - gives really accurate yardage to the green - front, middle and back. Also gives hazard yardages. Have not found a course yet that this rangefinder does not recognize. Only down side - course listing is very hard to read especially for those of us with aging eyes.
