Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U, PC USB and Switch, 4 Port

Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U, PC USB and Switch, 4 Port

I went from a bad player with a Pro Controller to a bad player with a GameCube controller 10/10

I bought this product so I could use my old Gamecube controllers on my Nintendo Switch (including the Wavebird Wireless Controller). It works exactly as advertised and the response time seems perfect as well. It's a great way to give your old controllers new life.

If you're someone who's looking to get this for your Nintendo Switch like I was, just keep in mind that game functions that call for motion control won't work. That said, I have yet to come across a game for the Switch where motion controls are an absolute must in order to play. Mario Odyssey allows you to use motion controls more than any other game I've played, but it's still easily playable without ever using that function.

Lastly, also keep in mind that you don't get to determine which buttons become what on a different controller than the Switch's. For example, the left shoulder button that allows you crouch, long jump, and backflip in Mario Odyssey became the Z button on my Gamecube controller (instead of the left bumper). So you may have issues in certain games where it's not nearly as intuitive as using the Switch's controller is. But to me, this is still completely acceptable---the convenience of being able to use my old controllers again far outweighs the very minor nuisance.

UPDATE: The adapter works with Nintendo Switch for Smash Bros Ultimate and as a replacement joy con for other games when no motion controls are needed.

Using the adapter in Wii U mode, plug the black usb male plug into your switch hub while using the switch in tv mode. You can now use your gamecube controllers as you would any other controller on the switch. Tested with Rocket League, Astro Bears Party, Fortnite and more. I'm hoping this holds up in December with Smash Bros Ultimate. This sounds too good to be true but could definitely save hundreds on joy cons.

Original Review:

Not many reviews talk about the PC aspect, so I'll discuss that first.

In PC mode, the controller is fully mappable as a normal joystick and supports rumble after quick installation of drivers by Mayflash's website. I have used this adapter with two versions of Project64 (with rumble support!!), SNES9x, and NEStopia: each program worked great with the controller. In Wii U mode, this works great with Dolphin, a GameCube/Wii emulator, once you follow the directions on the Dolphin website. Dolphin is preconfigured for rumble support and premapped input. Could not be happier with using this on my PC.

On the Wii U, as long as it is in Wii U mode, it works right out of the box for Smash Bros Wii U ONLY with first party wired and third party wired/wireless controllers. Have not tested this with a Wavebird GC controller yet, as I do not have one. No input lag whatsoever, was able to easily perfect pivot even though I am not a top tier competitive player.

This adapter has an amazing build, with hefty supports at each point where the cord ends. Third party controllers do not fit as snug as first party controllers into the ports, however this has caused no problems even when playing with 4 players on the PC. The switch from PC to Wii U mode is large and has the right amount of resistance so that it will not switch unintentionally but feels like it will last a long time.

All being said, if you plan to ever use this on the PC, then this is a much better option than the official adapter as you can take advantage of Dolphins Wii U mode support while having many more options than Nintendo's adapter when in PC mode. For the Wii U only this adapter is equal with Nintendo's, so pick whichever works best for you with price vs collector value.

EDIT: This does work with the Wavebird!!

A disclaimer: I only just received this product, so I am not making any statement about its reliability. Others reviews can, perhaps, attest to its longevity. I can simply confirm that, with the Nintendo Switch 4.0 update which allows GameCube controller support through the Wii U adapter, this device serves perfectly well as a replacement to the harder-to-find Nintendo-branded product.

Originally thought it didn’t work with switch.... that is until i realized i hadn’t changed the switch on the back of the adapter from PC mode to switch mode. Works flawlessly

Description

Adapter for game cube controllers to allow for use on Wii u. Compatible with super smash bros. Wii u & switch.

Works well with the PC, allowing you to use your favorite GameCube controllers with your PC games!

About the Nintendo Switch: After Nintendo's 4.0.0 update, I was hoping that the adapter would work just like the WiiU official adapter allowing 4 GC controllers at once. Sadly, while in the WiiU mode, the controllers are not recognized. In PC mode, all controllers work as the same input (all control the same player), and the analog sticks are detected as D-Pads. I hope that Mayflash gives us a firmware update so this adapter works with our Nintendo Switches as well! Will post an update if they do.

Not only does it work for the Wii U but it also works for the Switch! It took a few tries to get it to work on Mario Cart because at first it wasn't connecting, but you just need to close the game and reopen it in order for it to register that the adapter is plugged in. The game cube controllers work with every game as well, so it's a nice switch from the joycons that the Switch uses to a classic controller.

The comment down below reflected the first time I went and bought this thing. Months later, I bought it again since Nintendo likes to limit their stock on everything. Now it works like it was supposed to. The input doesn’t stay in all the like, like it would suddenly disconnect, but replugging in the controller works like it should.

Original Impressions: If I could put zero stars in, I would. There should be no excuse for a brand new product to work like this. Every time I use my first party Game Cube controller, it always goes up for some reason. It doesn't do it in the other ports. Just player one's. So, I get a replacement for it, and it's still have the same problems. I guess it's my fault for buying third party, but even then, it still should work as advertised. I got this for my Switch and Wii U to hopefully play with the game cube controllers. Now, I'll probably have to wait until December for Nintendo's official one to release.

I got this item primarily for super smash bros. ultimate and so far it does the job just as I anticipated. I have 4 gamecube controllers and have not had any issues using them with my switch. I even tested playing Minecraft with my switch using a gamecube controller and this adapter, it actually was easy to configure. I had to set up the controller setting so that the L/R buttons were flipped with ZL/ZR but it could not have been simpler.

After a week of having this product I finally realized there are USB ports on the left side of the switch dock, dumb mistake on my end. It is worth mentioning that there are two USBs on this adapter, the black one has given me better luck than the grey one when comparing if only one of them are plugged in. When I realized both can be plugged in on the left side it wasn't an issue, but when I was plugging one or the other (black or grey) in the back side of the dock my experience is that the black one is more reliable.

Works exactly as intended with no lag/delay in the controls. The only reason I took off a star is that I had a lot of difficulty getting it working properly. On a Windows 10 laptop PC, I had to download a different firmware as a driver from Mayflash, and download a different program called Zadig to get my computer to actually use that new driver. On top of that, I have to keep my adapter in WiiU mode even though I use a PC for some reason. I use the Dolphin GC Emulator and there's instructions on how to do that on their website. I know compatibility is tricky, but it took me about an hour to get all that figured out and actually start playing. If I weren't somewhat tech-savvy there's no way I would have gotten this to work, hence why I only gave 4 stars for the inconvenience. It seems like other people have just been able to plug it in and play, so maybe it's just my computer, who knows. Just giving my experience.
