Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZET)

Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive (DTSE9H/32GBZET)

I needed a USB drive on my keychain. I bought 6 different ones (some purchased at Amazon and some at Staples). This one is my favorite. The metal casing feels strong yet light. And it fits easily on any keychain. It's about 80% the size of a standard house key (see my photo that I added). Also, it's very good looking. Looks great on the keychain; looks great when inserted into any computer.

The drive read/write speeds are a little on the slow side but reasonable. I timed some file transfers on my computer (Dell Optiplex 380):
* For read speeds, I averaged 16.1 MB/s (ranged from 10 MB/s to 18 MB/s).
* For write speeds, I averaged 6.8 MB/s (ranged from 4 MB/s to 11 MB/s).
In general, larger files took longer to transfer than smaller files (single 300 MB file took longer to move than one hundred 3 MB files). Other users with the same device have reported an average of 17-18 MB/s read speeds and 11-12 MB/s write speeds. These are considered to be AVERAGE speeds for usb flash drives. If speed is of the essence, then look for a high speed drive that can read/write 30 MB/s or faster. If you're mostly transferring documents, photos, and other small files, then these speeds should suffice.

Another small complaint. I do not feel a 'click' when the drive is inserted fully. So I just push until it won't go in anymore or when I see that the computer has recognized the drive. A minor annoyance in an otherwise great USB drive.

I highly recommend this drive. While the speed on this device is not top notch, its performance is reliable and it comes in a great little package.

I have been using these USB drives for over 2 years now. I own 2 silver 16 GB, 1 silver 8 GB, 2 gold 16 GB. Some are used daily/weekly, others are more long term backups. Not one has failed me. These attracted me because they are in a seamless metal housing and look like they can take some abuse.

I decided to leave this review when I randomly looked at some of the 1 star reviews. I feel like people lose the logic and simply look at quantity, they don't take into account the percentage of GOOD reviews. Currently as of 12/30/14, the reviews are about 90% positive and 7% negative, with the remainder being 3 star reviews. Keeping in mind that people are far more likely to comment when they have a negative experience, that means that more than 90/100 people that buy this device are happy or OK with it. There is nothing wrong with that statistic. While I understand that there will be defects in some devices, this does not mean that Kingston is unreliable or should be losing any credibility. There is a reason that a warranty exists, no manufacturing process is perfect. If you base your purchase decisions on items that have 100% customer satisfaction reviews, you will likely be purchasing nothing. While I'm sure that some of the 5 star reviewers could be challenged as well, I notice several 1 star reviews that simply say 'product broke', 'cheaply made', 'major design flaw'.. then don't follow up with any detail. This is a metal housing with no seam, the main thing that the reviewers are complaining about comes down adhesive holding the plastic memory stick inside. I realize that this is a very important failure, but an expected one. Metal is adhered to plastic, it will never be perfect.

I have never had the inside pull out as people have commented.. and these get used quite frequently as I work with automation equipment and software. I'm always working on my laptop and transferring files to/from machines. I have them on keychains, they are always banging against each other and counter tops as I toss them on my counter/table/toolbox. Every time I plug this device in, it is recognized and immediately available for use. My main drive has been in use for over 2 years and has likely been plugged in and removed over 1000 times, dropped several dozen, lots of abuse with adjacent keychain items. It has probably been used on 100 different computers. Maybe I just got the best ones of the bunch??

For the longevity I've gotten out of these devices, I'd say that they are/were well worth the money. Memory has become quite cheap. When I picked these up, they were $10 for 16 GB. In my opinion if they last for a year they were worth it. As for the people complaining about losing data.. with any form of backup, if you are relying on a single device.. your practice is flawed. For important data, you should always use redundant backups. This is generally true even with backup hard drives! You should never copy important files to these devices and delete the original. Large companies backup their data using multiple forms of redundancies, multiple networked drives and such because they know that a single device can and will fail. This is no different for individuals. At my company, if I stored important data on one of these devices and it failed, I lost important files.. they would look to me and I would take the blame simply because.. well, it would be my fault!

I love it!
I don't produce a lot of video or slideshows, but when I do, I like to make them portable enough to easily share.
Memory sticks are currently, the cheapest and simplest way I know to send my content with friends and co-workers.
The biggest problem with this things, honestly, is keeping them organized and labeled.
Finally, a new age design that features a decent sized loop that you can use to attach it to a keyring and/or key tags with a table.
Functional, the 2.0 USB (standard speed) is fine for most work and paste enough to play video (Quicktime .m4p format) and any kind of music. The WRITE and READ Times for this drives is in a tech spec somewhere on-line, but to me, it simply means expect it to take about 3 times longer to write files to the stick than it does to READ them back off later. Thats pretty much normal for most devices anyway).

This is not a "3.0 USB" drive, which just means it isn't capable of the faster 3.0 speeds on the new and faster USB ports.

Styling is handsome and rugged metal (aluminum, I would guess - magnets don't stick to it).

My only comment is that I think the units were labeled completely backwards:
This might be harder to explain, but the gold standard for cables is to print the symbol on the top side of the USB plug.
In this case, the top side reads "DTS39 32 GB" (I guess DTS39 is a model number ??). Anyway, it's upside down and not helpful.
The bottom side has the "Kingston" logo, which, to me, belongs on the top side (reversed to read right side up).

See my photos for how they look on a laptop with two USB ports on the left side (fairly common today, but obviously, other devices may be built differently).

I bought one of these a few years ago. i had dropped it on the road and didnt notice. a few days later while walking along the same route i had found it(i know it was mine because i carved my initials on it) it had been run over it had rained and snowed the roads had been salted and plowed and it looked horrible. i brought it back home and saw that it STILL WORKED! i still have it to this day and it is still working however speed have dropped(im guessing its due to grime on the terminals inside) attached is a picture of the flash drive mentioned. alot of wear and tear but once again it does work.

I travel a great deal for my job. There are some important files in my main computer at work with information that changes frequently. I need access to that data all time so I have been moving the files with updated information to a flash drive, and from there I was downloading the information into my laptop that always goes with me when I’m on the road. If I packed in a hurry, with too many charging wires and paperwork also in my backpack, my flash drive would often sink to the bottom and get lost.

I bought the Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 USB Flash drive because the device has a round opening which allows me to attach the flash drive to my keyring. Now I am actually carrying the information I need with me all the time, and this is very handy when I need to work in my laptop from home. Although it appears to be quite small, the flash drive holds 16 GB of information, which is more than enough to meet my needs.

The drive is “capless”, so you can quickly insert it right into the computer without having to remove a cover first. At first this worried me, but the metal casing is strong and I have had no issues with the device, even bumped around riding inside my purse or hanging down from the ignition when I’m driving.

There was a delivery issue with the first Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 USB Flash drive I ordered. Amazon let me know right away that they had lost the shipment, and took ownership of the problem. They offered me the choice of reordering or accepting a refund with their apology. I chose to reorder, and they took the delivery method up a notch, so the replacement got to me very quickly. If I ever need more GB space, I plan to get another one of these.

This is my review of the Kingston Digital DataTraveler SE9 8GB.

The usb drive arrived in the “frustration free” packing which consisted of a cardboard/card stock envelope containing a plastic clamshell container with the usb drive & instructions. This proved to be true to form and was indeed frustration free.

The device was smaller than I imagined, the width is only slightly wider than the usb connector itself and the length is about 2/3 of my house key or half of my car key. Just to humor myself I tossed it on the kitchen scale and noted it weighs 7g.

The instructions were multilingual and to be honest pointless in this day and age. Operation of the USB is nothing to write home about being USB 2.0 but where this excels is I now ALWAYS have a usb key available. It’s not often but sometimes while I am at work, school or even home I just can’t find a simple usb drive to backup or transfer files and this should garauntee that NEVER happens. I could have opted for faster and I could have opted for bigger but this 8gb (actual 7.25gb of storage) is more than adequate for those random tasks at hand. The metal construction gives me faith it will hold up to the rigors of my pocket, and the light weight construction gives me a piece of mind it won’t cause undue stress on my vehicles ignition (as heavy keychains can)

I recommend this product to anyone looking for a convenient portable relatively hard to lose USB flash drive.

Love this. Super sleek and small. I use it to store thousands of songs and play them in my car using the USB port. Easier and safer than carrying my iPod around. Works great. It is so tiny, you can easily clip to your keys, necklace, or anything else. It has a brushed aluminum look that makes it look very high end. ***UPDATE*** I have had this over a year now and it is still going strong, I leave it plugged into my car's USB Port, so I am never without my music. I live in New England, so it has been outside in the car through 4 seasons, ranging from 0 degrees to 100 degrees, and it still works like the day that I got it. Very pleased, and I would recommend to anyone considering this.

As a university student, I needed a reliable flash drive to store my school work and needed to transfer files back and forth between various computers on a daily basis. At first I was concerned about the cap-less design, thinking the end could become corroded, etc. But so far, everything has been ok and I have been plugging it into various computers almost every day without an issue. I bought the USB 2.0 version because my old desk top did not have a USB 3.0 port yet. But now I've upgraded my desk top and my laptop and both have USB 3.0 ports, so I will upgrade to the USB 3.0 version because of my experience with this Kingston Digital DataTraveler so I can take advantage of the faster 3.0 speeds. Some reviews have said this is a very slow drive and that is indeed true. Maximum write speed is just above 5MB/sec and read speed is only are 21MB/sec. So this is not suitable for transferring very large files unless you want to wait.

Because of the slim design, this flash drive will fit in any USB port, unlike other USB flash drives with bulky cases. It has been extremely reliable and no computer has ever failed to read it.

The only downside I can think of is that there is no led light indicating a file is being transferred to, or written on to the drive. But I think that's just a convenience anyway, as you can see the transfer progress on your monitor.

LIKES:
Slim design allows the drive to fit into any USB port
Cap-less design - no cap to lose
All metal body makes this very durable.
Large key ring allows the drive to be put on any key chain and with the metal body, will not break off.

DISLIKES:
No led indicator
May be too slow for very large files

Others have remarked on the speed and I think it's great. The look is sleek and top-notch. It's a little stiff inserting but it always registers pretty quickly. The exterior is durable. It would very hard to crack or bend it.

After a few weeks, the little disk inside the drive fell out.

I have this on a key chain that consists of two house keys and my car key. I try to keep my keys as light as possible. I also have this on lanyard and my boyfriend is fond of spinning my keys around it. I guess this may have contributed to the little disk (not sure what it's called) slipping. Otherwise, I kept my keys clutter free and have used the drive only a handful of times.

It inserted back in and works fine. However it just fell out on its own again when I picked up my keys. I'm taking it off my keys and keeping in my backpack. It's still working, though. I'm just not fond of possibly encountering an empty drive case and losing everything.

BTW I am trying to submit a picture of the correct way to put it in if it ever slips out. If you put it in the wrong way, it's a pain to take out to reinsert.

edit: Looks like there are at least a few people who had the disk fall out and got a replacement fine. My drive still works after reinserting it, so when it happened again, I superglued it in. I don't recommend this but if you do it, be careful :) I put a thin layer of superglue at the end of the disk and just inserted it back in. The drive still works fine. I went up a star because you CAN get it replaced if this is a problem. I still love the look.

This flash drive is meant for a specific purpose. It is not fast. It is not super high performance. BUT it is the most durable, lightweight, and low profile usb drive that fits amazingly well on your keyring and will not fall off. I have used the ones with the little cord loop, and those break unbelievably fast. I have used some other solid pieces that are supposed to go on your keyring and they bulk up your keys or get in the way. This is the only flash drive I've ever used that feels like it BELONGS on your key chain. And I can absolutely handle the slow speeds because the only things I'll put on here are presentations, papers, etc (all small files).

I have owned and used this flash drive on my keychain for ~4 years now. And I'm a college student so I don't go easy on it. It almost looks like it did the day I got it and does not have one bit of damage anywhere on it. HIGHLY recommend.
